I went as a civilian to a 1812 event, I had my Early style Southren mountain rifle. I’ve not spent a lot of time with military reinactors, I was shocked at the poor shape the soldiers had kept their muskets in. After a shooting demo we all went to clean, I noted only the civilians were cleaning.

I wanted to thank you. I’ve been cleaning muzzleloaders since I was a teenager, but the Bess was not working well. Sure, plugging the touch hole with a skewer and rinsing works, but not well enough. The idea of using a 12 gauge tornado brush is brilliant. I haven’t tried it with dry residue yet, but probably will. Still, it’s great. And the 4 swabs…. I got some pill bottles to keep them separate, but the first dirty swab, the second I use Turkey Tracks (a black powder solvent), 3rd to dry and 4th for balistol. Very happy. I did change some of your process to work for me. I always plug the touch hole. I don’t want black powder spooge water getting in the lock mortise, under the barrel or in the trigger. A toothpick is too small on a musket, but bbq skewers work great. I do plan to use the tornado dry, dump it like you did, but will plug the touch hole and keep filling with water until they come out clean. Then scrub wet with tornado and follow as above. Not exactly the same, but you’ve given me the key to getting it really clean. Of course, in front of the public, I can use tow in a tow worm. Still the above after I’m home.

Balistol is a better cleaner for black powder. It's also a better lubricant.

How do you use it? What step do you apply it at?

I am a ballistol fan as well. It's good for cleaning BP residue and for keeping moisture away. Inside of the barrel, outside of the barrel, wood, lock - I apply it everywhere and it works. Bonus: it's non-toxic.
