I love teaching people how to paint!
I created The Idaho Painter as an alternative to big box DIY video shows that have actors who only act like they can paint but really can barely act. My mission is to teach everyone across the globe how to paint from the non-experienced to the long time professional. No experience is necessary. My channel is for the home improvement person, DIY painter, handyman professional, home and garden enthusiast, and even the professional painter.

My husband and I recently bought a house that needed completely repainted inside. We wanted to save money and paint it ourselves. I’ve always been a horrible, splattery painter, so I thought I’d do myself a favor and watch some videos. When I stumbled across your videos, I felt like I hit the jackpot. You explain everything so clearly, and the steps you give are easy to follow. Thank you!

I just used your tips for clean up in my sink and it worked great. The brush cleaning was the same just did it under running water. The small roller I cleaned with my kitchen sprayer but I turned the roller so that it was vertical and the flying water from the spinning simply hit the sides of my sink. Worked great. Thanks for the tips.

Okay, I have to share how I do it and somewhat adapted Your method. For a brush, rinse it thoroughly with water pressure, from a sink, on both sides, and use a metal wire brush to remove chunks and funk of paint. Shake it once gently to expel water and lightly use the wire Brush to comb The bristles so they are uniform in the right direction. Rollers, Rinse via hose or sink after scraping it with 5n1 tool like Chris does. To dry, I use an air compressor to spin it dry, and wow, it works great. You're the man Chris!

Forever in your debt! I never knew what the rounded part was for on a 5 in 1 tool before, so I never bought one. Got the bulk of paint out of the rollers and then used it to get the rest out in the sink with some hot water since we don't have an outside spigot. Then instead of a sprayer, I hit them with 120 psi from the compressor and a blow gun attachment. I estimate it was less than three minutes total, and they were all nearly dry as I was surrounded by a pretty heavy mist of water. You saved me at least a half hour of work. Thank you!

I saw a guy awhile back on a video add flood up by the farrel of his brush to the bristles, and it kept the paint from drying out while you're painting with it all day. It was so much easier to clean! I just get a little on my finger a couple times wipe it about an inch down from the barrel of the brush and it really helps the paint from drying up while I'm working.. (Flood is a paint additive to help prolong the drying process, in turn letting the paint lay flatter as it dries)

Wonderful video! Thank you. I learned so much from watching this one video and will start on your others. Another tip- for latex paint, try to use only lukewarm water to wash out the brushes as hot water or cold water can set up the paint (I'm an artist and this is what I do with my fine art brushes). Also I just learned never to wash my paint tools in the sink (I see you wash outside-perfect!) when you have a septic system. Never connected the problems that might cause until this week. I feel, like, Duh!

A good brush can last a long time anyway. Cheap brushes will fall apart, the glue gives way, and the bristles come out of the handle. Wire brushing saves time cleaning good brushes.

Thank you brother for the upload. Some simple math for the folks that may not know....pulling the rollers comes in handy. When the job is done, it is a courtesy the leave some for the customer for future touch ups. As a contractor, there may not be a lot of paint left over, so this will reflect good on the job you do. I really enjoyed you showing the hose cleaning method. I might add to that by saying I find it helpful to half remove the nap, rinse inside the nap as well. Foot tapping or spinning, make sure the brush is not too wet when you case it. It is paper after all, and most know that a well taking care of brush out lives its case. As always, I enjoy your videos, and my prayers to you and yours. God bless. Cliff

Chris up north we always use a bucket when we clean our Roller. Either like you did it or setting the bucket upside down and hiding behind the bucket. The main reason we use a bucket that way up North is because lots of times it is cold outside and we don't want to get wet at all. In Hawaii no one has seen the bucket technique they just spray the roller at an angle and still stay dry not fearing getting a little wet which we usually don't. We also remove the roller and clean the frame and inner core. If you don't clean inside after a couple of uses it will get stuck. When cleaning a brush we use our knife to spread the bristles exposing the epoxy in the Farrell of the brush then we place a hose inside of the blush spraying directly on to the epoxy that holds the bristles in place deep within the brush. I have chinex bristle brushes that are 4 years old and not the slightest bit hard at the ferrel. Thanks for your informative videos.👍👍

If you use your roller everyday, and use the same colour when rolling, no need to clean it everytime, just get a new garbage bag and wrap it around the roller head, open up the bag and insert the roller just before the end of the roller and turn, like that it will remain moist for the next day. Great tips by the way.

Great video, Chris. One quick tip on cleaning heavily loaded brushes. It's always hard to get all the paint out of the ferrel without numerous rinsing. Fill your bucket about half way full and pump the brush up and down like a piston in a car engine. This makes quicker work of cleaning your brush so it runs crystal clear. I have brushes I bought in the early 90"s that are still in great shape! Rewrapping brushes in the cover after cleaning is essential! Great point. Also liked the Scripture reference. Thanks again!

I have a hose attachment to do just this. 4 inch across plastic tube 12 or 14 inches tall on its own stand. Drop the roller in and clip in, switch on hose and the water jets down the inside spray,spin and clean the roller. Sit in middle of lawn and run till water comes out clean. Can't remember where I got it from, but wish I'd bought 2 now as feet broken, still works though.

That's pretty useful! I don't know how often you're doing stuff that might put your camera in peril. If it's a decent amount of videos like that you might want to buy a cheap piece of acrylic or see through thick plastic and notch some 2 by 4 as a cheap and easy stand for that piece of plastic./acrylic. If your camera tripod is heavy duty enough (many consumer ones are questionable) you could even get a smaller piece of acrylic and jerry rig a mount to your tripod.

Lol way to fray your bristles out, first start with the bucket upside down using the bottom as a makeshift table place the end of your bristles hanging off the edge and using your wire brush, brush away from you In gentle to slightly rough motions, not too much to damage but to remove dried paint resting inside. Next fill up the five halfway with clean water and gently push the brush up and down Into the water. Afterwards fling the water out, then place the handle in between your hands as if they were closed after clapping then make a motion as if you are trying to start a primitive fire bow drill. Then with your hand bring the bristles back together.

Like to use a brush comb as well as wire brush on brushes. Also use coarse scuff pad to clean off caked paint on ferrule and bristles. I tried that roller cleaning method years back without the shield, the boss was not amused as the spray peppered the wall and window behind me lol. I like using a plastic hair comb on brushes and a wire brush for heavy build up. great video

You hold the roller frame at an angle, and you don't need the bucket. But you do need an area of about fifteen feet.

Hey have you come across a tool called the Dandy, I think you should check it out, it cleans rollers and brushes and it can be done inside...no hose and not making a mess all over ya lawn...it seems a more civilized way of cleaning tools, me, I've got brushes from 1998 still using them.

We never kick them to dry them out. It blows the bristles out. We use a roller pole and swat just the bristles on it and put it in the cover. They last a lot longer that way.

As a Pro Painter, I use brushes and rollers every day. I usually soak my rollers for 2-3 days in a 5 gallon pail, then refresh the water and repeat the process for a bout 1 week total. There will be residue on the bottom, but will be less each time you clean out the pail, It will be minerals and properties of the mixture. Spin it dry after a good rinse, let it completely dry over night, and use a lint roller to get any loose bristles and will last for many more paint jobs.

i wish there is an apparatus where all you need is to hook up a garden hose and turn on and off at the machine to clean it in this manner using centrifugal force. There are pool cartridge filters that are cylindrical shape just like the rollers but maybe about 3 feet long, and there are products that helps clean it via attaching hose and spinning it etc. I wish there's a portable and compact version for rollers using that same concept

I paint for a living, and it's amazing how many people think brushes are disposable. I personally dunt wash out naps,because you can just drop it into the 5 gallon bucket of the paint that's left.

See my comment above. Washing roller covers wastes a ton of water and pollutes the water supply. Time to care about stuff like that. Plus as a pro, I can paint the walls in an average size bathroom in the time it takes to wash out 2 roller covers. They cost 3 bucks or so. Why bother cleaning them? Slide a fresh cover on the roller frame and go for it.

The brush cleaning tips were good (anything to help discourage those pointless "brush spinner" tools - kicking out your brush is the way to go), however the method of roller cleaning is messy and time consuming. A much easier way is to just soak the sleeves in a 5 gallon pail overnight then rinse out, or even easier, wash in your washing machine on the cold cycle. One you've 5-in1'd out the sleeve and soaked it, there's nothing much in the way of paint remaining in the sleeve, just paint-coloured water, so there's nothing that can harm your washing machine or septic or whatever. I've used this technique for several years with zero deleterious effects on anything - septic, or the sleeves themselves (some manufacturers like Purdy pointedly say "do not soak!" but in my experience, they can soak pretty much indefinitely and will be fine).

Hey oregon painter Joe here, I found the secret hack...at least for brushes, boiling hot water to clean first then take hair conditioner to it and after use a hair straightener to make it new again, i took a 10 year old 4 incher that sat outside hardened with paintnand it worked.

Tapping brush on your foot actually wrecks your brush coz it loosens the fixing from the handle to your bristles

After rinsing, I press the brush against a rag. It soaks out the residual water / thinners / paint. Repeat after each rinse, and you will significantly reduce the number of rinses required.

Just one note: People should aim to get brass wire brushes if they can, steel wire brushes will (obviously) develop rust and stainless steel brushes are brittle and will end up with tines pointing all over the place. Any ways thanks for the tips, good stuff. Do you only use water based paint? Because I'd love a video on how to clean thinner based stuff.
@dominicjoslin5431
@dominicjoslin5431 3 жыл бұрын
I keep a series of three containers for the soiled thinners, each one containing progressively less soiled thinners. First rinse goes in the dirtiest container, second in mid-soiled, and the third container only contains clean thinners. After a few days or weeks, the paint settles out, and the thinners can be re-used. Depending on how much painting you are doing, will dictate the size of containers. This can be used for turps, metho,, lacquers, epithane, etc. Have been doing this for years, and I use probably 90% less thinners than by throwing out the dirty thinners.

Before cleaning your roller, do a quick rake to push any excess paint off . Save a little time. 5-1 has the curve, slide it down your roller even a stir stick will do.

Hi Guys, I used Dulux primer today on my outside wall. After painting, I tried to squeeze the excess paint off the roller but little came off. I let water run over the roller but little paint was coming out that way either. I hung it up to dry and the roller dried hard! Was my paint too thick? I used this type of paint before but this batch was exposed to the air. Maybe it was the type of roller!
