Bar Keepers Friend foaming spray will work wonders on raw or plated brass. I came back to playing this year, after a break of nearly 20 years. My mouthpieces were all badly tarnished. A couple squirts of the cleaner on the cups and a little rubbing made them look pristine. To finish, I rinsed them off with a little water and alcohol, and dried with a microfiber towel.

Longer than 15sec, wrap the foil around the mouthpiece so its touching, keep adding more baking soda, let the water cool till you can stick your hand in, touch the foil to get electrons to transfer to the foil. Only works on silver.

I have a bronze cup. It’s supposed to be a matt finish but I’m one of those irritating people who needs something to fiddle with, constantly. I spend a lot of time on Zoom (Union stuff mostly) - so my mouthpiece is constantly shiny. Still sound rubbish though!

What does the foil do?
@ScottLegerHorn2 жыл бұрын
The foil causes the chemical reaction with the baking soda that cleans the mouthpiece
@lastnamefirstname850 Жыл бұрын
The sulfur (that bonds with silver and creates the tarnished looks) more easily reacts with aluminium than with silver thus reversing the tarnish without using any abrasive methods. Baking soda is just a catalyst and you don't need to boil the water, hottest from your tap will be enough. You can also leave leave the mthpc or instrument or anything silver for a while in such a bath without any adverse effects. Gently polish with silver cloth (which is very very slightly abrasive) afterwards to completely remove any tarnish left.
