Yep, researching this stuff always pays off. When I read about some of the caustic cleaners people use I knew I did not want any of that. I decided to experiment and took my good old white vinegar. Wiped down the deck with straight white vinegar and the result is great. I am always soooo happy when I can get something cleaned without toxic chemicals. Now I do have to say that carpet was placed onto the deck for many years, cheap carpet too, but that too protected the wood tremendously. I was right, the carpeting makes a huge difference, or whatever other covering you choose and the vinegar made the wood look so nice and freshly cleaned. Even I was surprised by the results. We get bombarded every day with so many chemicals, I do not want that at home too.
@mikedakin20165 жыл бұрын
no chemicals ? what do you think vinegar is , a magic liquid ? It's acetic acid and is certainly toxic to that green stuff growing on your decking . That's why it killed it !!!!
@PoissonDemiVide3 жыл бұрын
I know I’m late to the party, but had to reply to the jerk that clearly knew what you meant, but wanted to condescendingly comment. I totally agree with your choice to minimize the use of toxic chemicals, especially when we are unknowingly exposed every day by greedy corporations that don’t have our interests in mind. This commenter probably works for some nasty plastic factory, and got his feelings hurt 😢

@@PoissonDemiVide but what he has told is correct. Vinegar is ascetic acid and the acid is killing the green stuff. Am i missing something?
@PoissonDemiVide2 жыл бұрын
@@sitav6661 you’re definitely missing something. You can actually drink vinegar. It isn’t toxic.
@rigormortisrm2 жыл бұрын
@piscean3679 as much as I would like to agree with your defence Vinegar is definitely not safe to drink in its raw form as its pH ranges from 2.4 to 3.3. It will rip out your tooth enamel amongst other effects though it is considered safe to drink mixed with other diluted liquids such as water or juice, Jury is still out there. You are right in the way other person has responded in condescending tone, he/she could have phrased it rather nicely but the statement is very valid

You don’t pressure wash a deck, you soft wash a deck. If you had the deck professionally soft washed, using the proper detergents, the rails and the sides would have gotten cleaned as well. Unfortunately there are unprofessional pressure washers who don’t know how to clean wood properly. A true professional in any field is always worth the money.

Great advice, used it - worked, not all perfectly removed, smooth surfaces cleaned much better, other spots require sanding. Any advice what to put to preserve the wood ? I tried semitransparent stain - pilled off in a year; boiled linseed oil - the wood looked beautiful just for a short time, then got black, I assume with a mildew, very disappointed 😞. Now, after I cleaned it with soap, I’m not sure what to do next? What to use to protect the cedar wood ? Or just leave it as is ? Any advice?

This method only works with some decks that are not too dirty. If there is an old finish that is still there and the dirt is on top of it then this can work. In my case the finish is long gone and the dirt is so impeded into the wood that the only solution is pressure washing.

1. Spray it off with hose to remove loose debris and gunk. 2. Use dish detergent and a hard brush and SCRUB. No offense but your deck looked like it was in worse condition than mine but turned out way better when the only product you used was dish detergent... 🥺 I pressure washed and let it dry for 2 days then scrubbed my deck with 1 cup TSP + 1 quarts Outdoor Bleach + 3 quarts H2O and it still looks like it needs more work 😩 Man, I scrubbed the living hell out of it. I mean it looks a lot better but doesn’t look anything close to your results. I’m going to have to try your method tomorrow.. I hope it works! Wish me luck!

What do you mean by staining it? Are you going to clean your deck before staining it? If you're restraining your deck you're going to have to remove the old stain and the dish soap you might have missed. If you're staining for the first time you just have to be extra through, but the soap should interfere with the stain.

Pressure-washing a wooden deck will ruin it! You'll get ridges where the softer fibres are blown away with the water pressure.

@@ElToroCa Only if the original boards have had their best days used AND the cone of spray & PSI pressure, is too intense. If you have crappy wood on the deck, then yes, it'll make matters worse but better that to be able to see the true condition of wood first. Then you have the choice to repair, replace or just cover with a coating.
