Hayward instructs to put the cord end on the bottom. This is so the internal contacts get cleaned of scale by the acid also. As to acid into pool not a problem since you can use muriatic acid as pH down. But you are putting what you just dissolved back into the pool. Also if by chance you pool pH naturally drops over time you will have to add pH Up solution sooner and that is going to form a salt that can plate out in the cell again. All you are doing is using dilution as your solution. Eventually that acid or the resulting salts will go out with the waste or backwash. But a cup of acid into 15 or 40 thousand gallons of water is minuscule.

don't you have to shut off the water valve? i don't see how water won't come pouring out; when I clean my cartridge filters the water will keep flowing unless I turn off the valve.

Usually, the hump/belly is facing up.

Usually (at least with my instructions for my Hayward T-Cell 5) it is to be mounted vertically with the cord facing down....

Do not use acid ,I used CLR still good after 9 years
