How to clean and treat the underside of your car using Lanoguard.

Having heard a lot about Lanoguard underbody spray, I decided to give it a try! I made a video covering the process I used from start to finish. I hope you find it useful :-)

Did this on my 2013 Fiesta ST prior to last winter and it has stood up brilliantly. When I reapplied last month the water was still just running off underneath & it's definitely stopped the rust on the subframes & arms dead.

Quick question. I’m going to use bilt hamber auto foam underneath my car every few weeks in winter to keep salt off the underneath. The car is getting undersealed also but was worried the underseal will get removed or weaker if I wash with some form of snow foam?

How did you take the old. Layer off, before applying the new one? Or you just spraied over it

@@gtyah You can re-apply over it 4 times. Beyond the 4 layers, it is recommended to brush them off and start from layer 1 correct me if im wrong

Underseal your cars yourself when you get them new if you don’t who’s faults that. Lamp guard is a waste of time. Also your sealing in rust that’s already there. You have to treat it first with a rust converter such as kurust. I put kurust in a spray bottle go over the underneath first let that dry. paint with hammerite spray paint and then you guard it

Newer stuff is fine,zinc galvanise dipped shells,even on Transits,just subframes and suspension get scruffy,old Ford's however were appalling.

Nice RS! I'm in the USA and Ford no longer offers the Focus or RS anymore here. Here in the states we have some new products; Fluid Film Black and Woolwax Black (Both Lanolin based products)... it really makes the underbody look great while protecting it.

I have a 2012 Subaru STi and have zero rust on the underside. Blows me away this car looks like this. Everytime it snows, I spray the underside with water to get the salt off. I'm gonna look into doing this.

For Axles i prefer using cable grease. You can spray it in summer or brush it on. It´s easier to work with and delivers better results. A great and fast way to seal off rust is Owatrol. Spray or brush that on, let it seep in for 24 hours and then go back with some white grease in a spray can. That will last you 2-3 years easily.

maybey im calling a different product here but open gear and wire rope lubricant like mobil1 ogl 007 with graphite mix etc , i have found covers and coats well but a couple years down the line its dry/flaking and it has trapped moisture behind it leaving red rotten metal in a terrible state . just experience over the years and now looking at penetrating products for my next car

Just used on my four year old crossover which was beginning to show a little age. Bought the basic Regular kit but then realised that the injector wand was needed for sills/box sections. The injector wand fits onto the regular sprayer. Red hot day so power washed and Lanoguarded three hours later when dry. Lanoguarding took under an hour. I put the car on ramps, back then front. I used half the container. - 1ltr. Wear old clothing as the lanoguard drips if very warm and sticks. Really pleased. Then wondered if the motogrease would be good for my old black composite front door. Tried it sparingly with a brush (hardly used any) and wiped with a cloth. The door looks like new. I think I will find other applications.

Hey Gary, good job! On a separate note, worth keeping an eye on the Y section between the 2 boxes of the Milltek as they are prone to splitting. I had to have mine welded up last year as it had split

I was Laughing watching you clean the underside of your car a easier way is to Leave the car on floor with your jet wash use path/ drive attachment the one like upside down pan attach some casters on wood at correct height so will just pass underneath car use couple of screws through plastic washer head take it off or Leave it on shouldn't get in your way when path cleaning should take 15mins full car try it 😀

Good to see you back, Gary. Love the video. I’m assuming this problem exists with the mk3 RS as well? I’ve had mine for over 3 years now, and rust is something that worries me too. I’ve driven it 3,000 miles in that time for that reason. I live in Scotland so rain is a common occurrence! But as you say, life is too short, and I want to be able to enjoy mine more. I did the same to my Mk3 RS a few years ago with Bilt Hamber. Bit of a faff to do, but worth it I think to stop some of the rust. The paint protection from (Ford's) factory is shockingly poor

Just did 21,000 driving around remote Australia, both desert and beach driving. Industrial Lanolin is always in my kit and I lather up my V8 200 Series in the stuff

Helpful video...Realistically there are no short cuts to get a long term solution to get rid of the visible rust/dirt, you need to remove the front and rear sub frames to get access to all parts....then sandblast/wire brush prime and paint .....then use this product to maintain the finish long term...

I jacked each side at a time took the wheel off (makes it more accessible) before treating the chassis with lithium grease & engine oil.

actually Ford has an option to treat your car from factory but not many people buys it i believe, you can check your VIN# to see if you get it, my mk3.5 2017 is without factory treatment and looks worst then yours under, I will have to treat it against rust myself very soon

I would highly recommend that you get a spray gun with one of those long plastic tubes that has a nozzle on the end of it that sprays in all random directions, and shove it right down inside the cavities to coat the inside. Otherwise there is going to be a whole load of really nasty stuff going on that you can't see until it's far too late. I'm in the process of doing my Mk3 at the moment, and I decided to remove the side skirts and I'm glad I did because it turns out there was a whole load of mud and stones trapped between the skirts and the pinch welds and it was just stuck there trapping moisture 24/7. Honestly, it's the places that you can't see that you need to be concerned about most.

There isn’t really any factory underseal lol. Just bare metal components. Either way the whole chassis is now coated with this.

All that has done is encapsulate the rust into the frame even more so. Why did you miss the most crucial step of wire wheeling and sanding off the rust? You'd have been better off with Bilt Hamber products, far superior.

I just followed the instructions mate - I actually went a bit further by properly cleaning before application. To quote Lanoguard; Lanoguard prevents and completely stops rust developing further. It will creep, bind, and bond underneath surface rust. It creates a barrier by hermetically sealing to the surface stopping water and oxygen getting in, therefore not allowing rust to develop. There are a lot of people out there who use this stuff and swear by it, so thought I’d give it a go.

@@CarFocused not knocking your method or application as you said you just followed the instructions. I just never understood how you just slap products over the top of rusted areas as I was looking into using Lanoguard myself on my own car but I just felt as if you were just covering the problem up rather than rectifying it. I had washed mine underneath, degreased and then wire wheeled and sanded back everything to bare metal. Then it was hydrate80 rust convertor, zinc primer then the bilt hamber cavity wax and underseal.

If it can rust apply normal thick engine oil, messy job but hey it's the best. Get waxol apllied in every nuck and hole using a high pressure applicator, this kinda atomises the oil droplets so it settles everywhere, sealey sell a good gun and kit for this. Don't forget to where a mask and eye protection. Lets keep these Fords rollin :)

I would have been tempted to use a rust converter before the lanogaurd. I used Jenolite aerosol converter on my mk3 RS suspension parts then painted them with black chassis paint.

Yea a few people have said this too - but the instructions don’t mention that it’s necessary as this allegedly stops the rust in its tracks (albeit it doesn’t remove it). It wouldn’t have been a bad idea though but without a 4 post lift I just kept it as simple as I could.

Nice clean-ish underside but you really need to treat the surface rust before spraying it. Hammerite do a treatment that might be better that can be put over rust ? 30 years ago I used a wire brush and treated my cars rust before applying underseal even my Alfa didn't rust once regularly treated. I used wax seal in the sills and doors. Regular washing and cleaning a car helps prevent corrosion but stones do a lot of damage underneath your car. Always make sure your car ramps are rated to take the weight of your vehicle as some cheap ones are rubbish.

Tbh mate the car will have a full underbody restoration over the coming years - this is just a stop gap to slow things down a little and get it looking a bit better too. As for the ramps, they are some of the best you can buy, excellent bits of kit from RaceRamps.

The Hammerite stuff does that, Lanoguard is just a wax coating to repel contaminants after application. It does darken the subframes and make them look better though. It won’t get rid of rust, but it will prevent it from occurring / getting worse.

If you have access to another car I'd have been tempted to go down the route of taking it all off and getting all the parts individually powder coated and doing it over a period of time. You'd gain all the knowledge plus you'd have tonnes of KZbin content

​@@CarFocused Credit where due my friend.What i came across whilst on this topic last night, and products was waxoil, and in all honestly, from what i found, and the comments and replys i read, seems a much better option, lasts for years, little prep, very cheap in comparison, and comes in handy spray cans, so i wouldnt need any sprayguns, tools i dont have, n having watched it done, feel i could do the task easy, s waiting for a sunny day, and the wheels will be off one by one, so as to get to all suspension parts, wheel arms etc... I will be def interested in seeing how Lanoguard performed anyway, plus any more progress n uploads you do, i d love to have the choice of taking out my RS or ST!!! Probably be banned or skint with speed cams very quickly. Its all i can do to stick to the limits in my 1.6 tcdi 🚀

No wonder it’s got rusted subframes, should have used petrol to wash it & dryer it with a match👌 Dry ice blasting is the way forward, 👍
