How to Clean Beeswax

Hi from southern New Zealand 👋 im a beekeeper who specializes in wax production ( most beekeepers produce wax as a byproduct of honey processing) and was very impressed with your tutorial about rendering beeswax. A little suggestion to simplify your process, If you pour the molten beeswax carefully through a fine mesh such as a paint filter set into a large plastic bucket, or cheesecloth or even a old cotton t-shirt loosely streched over a large bucket, it will remove most of the impurities from your wax(beekeeper's call it "slum-gum"). Keeping the pot or bucket covered will prevent the block cracking as it cools. Great video 👍👋

I have about 6 or 7 years worth of wax cappings from harvesting honey. Very sticky with Honey still in sealed totes. Can I jump to this step or should I rinse the honey off abit. It was in a decapping tanks so alot has run off but ypu probably know what I mean. Anyways. Just kinda wondering how I should start my execution of processing the wax and you seem knowledgeable. @treverkleen6877 hi, that's a good wax collection. Bob binnie, kamon Reynolds, peter cowins are long time beekeeping KZbinrs that have videos about cleaning and preparing small batches of wax I'm sure they can answer this question in their videos better than I could anyday. YOU can get it cleaner by using smaller pots as you go end up wit 4 or5 inch pot that means use hot wire to cut harf a inch up from bottom and just reheat the bottomt bit

I did my first attempt at cleaning some beeswax I got from a ranch. However it’s sticking to the sides of the pots and it’s not coming out in that perfect shape. What can I do?

You might want to rethink your process - in your 2nd melt you stirred the pot with all that foam on the top - you succeeded in reincorporating the floating impurities which produced that grayish powdery look on the top of the rehardened 2nd block - that could have been eliminated by skimming off the foam - go to your shed/garage and claim an old actual scraper - you were sawing and cutting away wax while trying to remove the sludge off the bottom - go to the dollar store and buy a pack of unbleached natural fiber coffee filters - take all your waste filters and shaved off dirty wax and place into one of those used bags; tie it off - place in bottom of pot, weigh it all down with large rocks, add water 5-6 inches (or more) above the bagged waste - all your wax will float out of those wax robbers - after you recover the hardened wax and pour off the water, you will be left with wax free waste and filters - rinse and wash the filters to be used again - the remains will be soft and crumbly to be tossed and spread to the places chickens usually peck about, or spread to your garden or tossed in your compost - remember to keep the bags and rocks submerged while melting - you may need to melt one more time to pour through the coffee filters to enjoy a very pristine wax - save all those filters to add to future used filters for even more wax recovery

No matter how careful you are you always lose wax scraping the bottom of a rendered block. Beekeeper use a hive tool to remove it, which is kinda like a narrow putty knife 👍👋

Have you ever tried sifting some yuck out while the wax is melted?

im struggling with this method ... once it hardens I cant get it out the pot ... have you had that happen ?

If your having too much trouble removing it from the pot, I often pour mine into a second sacrificial container. An old milk carton works well, but make sure to use the cardboard ones because the plastic jugs will melt due to heat

Why not run the melted wax and water through a filter? Would save lots of time.

🤔 natural beeswax should only smell of honey unless it's contaminated with something. Water rendering like the method shown in this video should resolve your problem

If it smells like beeswax. I thought that was the goal. 😅
