This is a detailed video on how to clean EGR Passages and throttle body in V6 3.0 engine. The car is 2001 v6 3.0 accord coupe. This is J series V6 that was also used on Acuras (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002).
P0401 could mean one of the following:
1) Differential Pressure Feedback EGR sensor is faulty
2) There is a blockage in the EGR passage, most likely carbon buildup
3) The EGR valve is faulty
4) The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum
Recommended tools:
1. Screw driver set: amzn.to/2XAk3sH
2. Sockets and wrenches set: amzn.to/36xLnMn
3. Pliers: amzn.to/2U4rY0q
4. Carb cleaner: amzn.to/2XUfmtY

Thanks for a great video. I have a 2001 Honda Accord V6, when I removed the intake manifold the ports were solid shut with crud in the intake and the engine port was 80% clogged. Cleaned the ports and the throttle body, put everything back together and no more P0401 code. I'm at 600 miles plus now and no issues so far.

March 2022 I was extremely hesitant to try and do this myself. The mechanics around here charge 140 and hour and said just in labor it would be 3 hours plus a new EGR valve so I decided to try. My experience is oil change and an alternator so next to none. This video leaves nothing to guess about everything is included. The author needs a Venmo bc I feel like I owe him a 50 dollar bill for saving me so much money. It did take me 5 hours but that included trips to the parts store for torque wrench rental. Thank you a million times over!

Igor's how to tutorial was so helpful to me. My background/experience with working on cars is very limited. I always been afraid of fixtures, because I didn't know what I was doing and feared making things worse. Igor really breaks things down, and proceeds at a pace that even I am able to keep up with and not get lost. I was able to take care of the problem code P0401 (insufficient EGR flow) and get my car inspected. I am grateful for Igor taking the time to make this video. It was certainly a blessing to me, and I would highly recommend his teaching skills to anyone experiencing problems with their vehicle. Thank you Igor!

@@IgorKadulenkovwhat issues did you experience before cleaning? My car radomly starts surging when on the highway. I give it gas and it dies. Then suddenly it gets power again. It acts like a bucking bronco. One min it only goes 30 mph the next it races really face then it loses power again. This happened about once ever 5 months for about 30 mins of drive time. Is this erg port related?

For how long did your check engine light stay off once you cleaned your EGR valve and its ports? I spent so much at the honda dealership repair center getting so much work done, took my car to Auto Zone for the free check engine light diagnostic and it came up with the P0401 code as well.

Before I cleaned it I just tried to reset the CEL and it came on after ~30mi or so. Afterwards I did this cleaning I had the battery disconnected so the CEL was turned off but I did the cleaning and the CEL hasnt come back on yet and thats after ~200 mi or so. I also took a look at the EGR valve also (2 bolts and a sensor takes this off) and it looked almost brand new, but I still cleaned that anyways just to be sure. Ill let you know if CEL p0401 comes back on but I dont think it will unless it gets clogged again. It seemed like in my case it was just the entrances of the ports that were clogged and not all the way through. Good luck!

Igor, thank you for posting a great video! For me the hardest part was getting to the bottom throttle body bolt on the firewall side. You can't see the bolt head so you end of feeling around for it under the throttle cables. I also removed the EGR valve. That allows you to clean up all the carb cleaner that is sprayed in from the top side. I used carb cleaner, an old bike brake line as a snake and compressed air to clean the passage from both ends.

for those that dont realise this on like my 99 model 3.0 the pcv hose is in a different spot and its much safer to actually just pull the pcv itself out and leave hose connected.. if u try to pull this hose off after 150k miles more then likely u will be buying another... just sayin. very helpful video though. seems to have worked for me so far as well and i can see it was done on my vehicle by previous owner a year ago at a shop for $100.. took me 15-20 mins and a $8 can of cleaner

Very good!!!!, but one thing I do, I used compressed air to clean the manifold passages, as well as through the EGR passageway on the engine, ... if you do not have a compressed air source, another thing I do is to remove the EGR from the engine and run the engine, with varying rpm,.... amazing how much junk gets blown out of there. As a clogged EGR ( passages etc) causes an engine light, it does not pass state inspection. SO what I have been doing is blocking off the EGR by a thin metal plate ( made from a can lid). This stops exhaust flow from going through this passage. I get more HP also. Of course this causes the engine light to come on, but I am use to that. When inspection, is due, I then remove the plate ( this will be the first year I am doing this) and hope none of the passages will be clogged due to no exhaust recirulation through these passages. Will replace the EGR & reset the engine light, drive for the requisite 30 miles, then get it inspected. Once it passes, I will then put the block plate back on. Once a year hassle, but so much easier than doing the above work which I use to do every year, and paying for the gasket, and new EGR. I have had the opening in the manifold bored out and had placed a larger tube in ( Honda's work around this sad engineering design) but really has not helped. For me, this clogging seems to effect the EGR, which even with EGR cleaning would not help. So a new EGR when I take the plate off (this time) during inspection, and again, replace the blocking plate after inspection.

Great video. I believe I am in severe need of EGR cleaning and maybe replacing. I have problems with idle going down (sometimes stopping the engine), low performance and insanely higher fuel usage. I wish I had the tools and experience to do this myself but I will have to find a good mechanic to do it instead. Hopefully it'll turn out well.

Hey there. Did you get this done by a mechanic? If so. How much did it end up costing? And what exactly did they do?

@@miguelitocunsuelo7200 Hey. I did get the cleaning done by a mechanic in addition to valve adjustment. I’m not 100% sure about how they did it since I wasn’t at the shop while they were doing it. I believe they actually took out the EGR valve and cleaned it with chemicals, not sure which ones. After the work (including valve adjustment) all my problems were gone. I’m glad I had it done. As for the price I don’t think it would be a good example since I live in Turkey. The cars here are very expensive compared to US while repairs are a lot cheaper.

The EGR valve can be stripped for cleaning by undoing the 4 torx screws under the graphite/ fibre/metal gasket . You'll need a 7 mm spanner on the 4 nuts . The valve itself can be removed using the next larger size torx by holding the hex part of the solenoid through the apertures . Inside the EGR valve You will find a baffle that will stop the valve being cleaned properly by any other method . Using spray cleaners will not clean the back of the valve but may dislodge a lump of carbon that may wedge the valve open continuously causing hunting or loping at idle . The inside of the valve body particularly the seat can be cleaned factory fresh and you could even lap the valve to seat using fine paste . Reassembly is reverse order . Use a new OE gasket or make some using heavy duty glass reinforced silicon baking /barbecue sheet , 3 layers will reduce heat transfer from the valve to the solenoid and signal ,supply components .The valve normally cokes itself shut as it opens like an ordinary poppet valve into the transfer port to the inlet manifold and spends much of its time closed or just slightly open and I have seen them with the valve totally coked over . Many of the V6 parts are no longer available in the UK but just about anything peculiar to this model , like the ICM for instance can be made from other common Honda parts .

I have done this several times but you must clean the passage between the intake and the EGR. I use an old speedometer cable connected ti a drill. Start with the square opening at the (removed) EGR and work the cable as you slowly turn the cable with the drill. It will push through and finally come out the top of the intake port-intake removed, of course. At that point, you can pull it back and forth and spray carb cleaner down the passage. Put a rag over the hole at the EGR end and blow compressed air through the port. A LOT of stuff will come out. DO THIS OF YOUR OWN JUDGEMENT. I AM NOT TELLING YOU TO DO THIS, JUST SAYING WHAT I DID. I kept doing this until nothing would come out. Remove the cable, reassemble-no CEL now for thousands of miles. Good luck!

Great video. Congrats Igor. Top class instruction and enough detail to guide even the rankest amateur without loading too much technical stuff .onto the video. Great idea to illustrate the undo and tighten sequences. One query. In Australia I am not sure about the liquid you are using to clean out chambers etc. Is it available outside the USA?

After seeing so many videos of these kinds of fixes... I'll probably never go see a mechanic for this kind of stuff. "$120 for a catalytic converter; $245 for the service." That's what they told me. It took them 10 minutes to switch the cat out. They charged 24.5 dollars PER MINUTE that was spent working on my car. Lucky for them I don't have any welding equipment. Mechanic right up the street wants to charge me 800 dollars to clean out my EGR valve to get rid of my check engine light.

+Pander G yep, that's exactly why I try to do as much as I can by myself. A starter welding machine costs around 80$ on eBay. I guess it's a bit harder if you don't have a lift though. But yeah their prices are insane. I wish more people would service cars at home

after the intake manifold, that hole that was caked with carbon goes into the water passage on the driver's side. when I took mine apart that part was caked with carbon too, get new metal gaskets when you do and replace the giant o-rings on the giant water pipe from the passage to the engine
