I was the oldest of 5 kids and we all (including my parents) had to work hard and help with all the chores. Cleaning, cooking, laundry, gardening, canning, dishes, ironing, mending. We never got paid or an allowance. We still got plenty of play time/ free time.

Great vlog Melissa. I didn’t get paid anything for cleaning when growing up and like you our parents had us doing hard labour! In our culture you were duty bound to help around the home plus the fact they worked long hours themselves. Now I realise the frustration when they would come home and see dishes in the sink or untidy areas after a long day and be annoyed as I’m the same ! Doesn’t hurt to train kids from a young age to be tidy, organised and invested in keeping their home in a good condition.

Yes. Growing up doing the family dishes was my job(jobs were very much divided into boy and girl jobs unfortunately). Also, once a week typically on Saturdays, we were expected to clean our rooms and clean one other room in the house. No we did not get paid for chores. Doing chores was considered a part of being in the household and part of the family. Once I hit about 10 and my mom went back to work, it was my job to get dinner on the go for the family on the weekdays .

Yes I had chores. No I didn’t get paid for it. But I didn’t complain because I didn’t know better. My room was my responsibility. And I ran the vacuum in the living room and dining room. I had a nice childhood. My mom asked me to get my chores done. She didn’t demand it. And because I learned more about cleaning as I got older I became good at it. My mother and sister had a cleaning business and I worked for them before I went to college. And I went back and helped out after I graduated. I taught my children how to clean and they are really good at it now that they are grown and have their own homes. I keep up on the cleaning so it’s not too much at one time. And I have learned a lot from Melissa.

I wasn't payed doing chores, so I slacked a bit doing them. Fast forward to a few years ago and I still lived at my parents. My mom hired a cleaner to clean the home every other week but eventually that didn't work out because they kept changing who came and with animals, that isn't always a good thing. Getting an allowance was unheard of when I was growing up. 1955 on. However, my parents would give me money for dances, bowling, treats. etc. We were poor but I never went without. My sister and learned to do everything because mom worked like dad away from home. I took pride in cleaning our home. When it was done, I was allowed to go watch scary movies at my cousins a few doors away. Would not trade that for anything.

Good tips, I always forget about the timer and often about music/audio books to get through cleaning. When I was in high school I got either $20 a month or every other week and had to clean the kitchen, living room, bathroom, do my own laundry, cook at least a meal a week, do the dishes and feed pets and farm animals lol.

My sister and myself had a list of chores posted on the refrigerator while we were growing up. Each chore had a monetary value between a quarter up to $10 depending on the difficulty or length of time involved. Yard mowing was the money maker so I normally took that. We traded off chores we didn’t like but they all had to be completed before we could do anything fun.

I use your recipe for the all purpose cleaner every day, with tea tree oil. It smells great and is so inexpensive and it works better than any other cleaner. I even bought your microfiber cloths, love them. It’s nice to totally pare down my cleaning supplies. I tended to hoard them, always buying the latest ones. The all purpose cleaner covers it all😊

I love making my own all-purpose cleaner. I found a cleaning product that I absolutely LOVE the smell of so instead of buying the spray, dish soap, etc., I just purchase the dish soap and add a teaspoon or so to a spray bottle of water. It works great and is actually more fragrant than their cleaning spray. Sometimes I'll add a teaspoon of baking soda to give it that little scrubbing power. It really does save me so much $.

My kids won't get an allowance in exchange for house stuff. I expect them to tidy their own toys from 2+ (The level to which varies with their ability), put their dishes by the sink, and basically if they have the skills to do it, they do. They even help when we do bedding changes (Also varies with each kiddos ability). They feel really proud when they see the end result, they don't ever get this mindset of not having to be responsible for their spaces. They do know that they can ask someone to cover their share or assist them, and they know if they leave it then it stays there (When appreciate). For the most part this means someone volunteers if someone else is sick, and when better that is paid in kindless of helping back. They will, however, be given food-allowances when older (I want to set a budget for each kid, they can pick what they have for snacks then increase it to cover other food types as they age) so they can learn how to properly spend, how long things will last etc. If they run out, they run out. And only once they start handling that for a good while will I think about giving them a 'Free use' allowance. I also plan to do the same budgeting thing when it comes to buying their clothes as they age too. The younger they learn the easier it is, and it gives them a lot more choice and control over themselves, whilst also teaching them how to manage finances whilst in the safety net of their mother.

How do you feel about steamers for cleaning? For some reason, I don’t feel my floors are ever clean, especially in the bathroom. I use a traditional cleaner with microfiber mop then follow up with a steamer. I like it! Also, how do you stop from getting your cleaning procedures from getting out of hand? How do you start decluttering top to bottom, left to right, when the clutter is *everywhere*? Things got a little out of hand the last few years, it’s a long story. It’s overwhelming.

Funny story: I had plates removed from my leg but the doctor who installed them was a quack and used screws that haven’t been manufactured for decades. So the doc who removed them didn’t have the screw head in the operating room. He had to pause the surgery and send a nurse to the basement to find the right screw head, then sanitize it. The surgery took an extra 90 minutes.

My siblings and I had to do all the housework as payment for living at home and being fed. My kids take care of their own messes and things for free, but I paid them to do extra chores. Mostly in the kitchen, my eldest would tidy and clean the kitchen, and my youngest would do the dishwasher. My middle would tidy and vacuum the lounge. When my eldest moved out, the other 2's chores changed, but they also got paid more. Now, I've only got my youngest at home, and he has an intellectual disability. He still takes care of the dishes, clears and cleans the table, and feeds the cat. I will eventually teach him everything I taught the older 2 when he is capable. But he can change and make his own bed by himself, so that's pretty cool 👍🏻 Oh, and to brag even further, I've been homeschooling him for the last 6 months, and he's beginning to grasp phonics and apply it to reading!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻

I had to do chores, especially if I was on break from school. My mom would leave the dreaded note on the back of a piece of mail (if ya know ya know 😅) of a list of things to be done. We didn’t get an allowance really, but whenever we needed money for like a movie or shopping or something, we always got it. I am about to be giving my boys an allowance for chores, but they will learn to save too. So every allowance they get, they will put a portion of it in savings.

As an only child where my parents told me to focus on school, I dint have any chores but I was sly enough to observe how things are done around the house. So eventually I would start helping with dusting and changing the sheets. But I used to observe what and how everything was done. I wasn't allowed in the kitchen when cooking and especially when I was home alone. As an adult, it wasn't so difficult to clean and do chores but it did take to time to find rhythm on how to fit school and chores in this mess. But I love doing chores especially laundry and dishes. I don't enjoy dusting as much due to dust allergies but rest all are okay

I didn’t get paid to help around the house when growing up in the 60’s, but every time we went on vacation we had our own spending money that my parents had put away for that time, I like to spend a little bit of time cleaning each day rather than having one particular day set aside for cleaning my home, I’ll wipe down my shower every night of any water marks on the shower screen and tiles and I’ll do the same in my kitchen, I love waking up to a clean kitchen but then we don’t have any little kid’s living at home anymore but in saying that, that shouldn’t make a difference regardless, it doesn’t take long to stack the dishwasher or if you haven’t one of those, it still doesn’t take long to do the dishes from the night before, I would always do the dishes every night even when I had children at home or that would be their chore to do, the same with laundry, I’d rather do a little during the week than leave all the laundry for the weekend, even when I was working a full time job, once a month I’ll do windows and clean my shutters and window sills and ceiling fans and the filters in our air conditioners, I have better things to do than forever cleaning my home when it doesn’t really get messy or untidy. We had a small allowance equal to our age when we were little, but I don't actually remember it being linked to chores exactly. We wouldn't get our allowance if we didn't do our chores, but we also didn't get it if we were disrespectful. I think they mostly gave us allowance to teach us about how to spend money, we had a little log of how we spent our money, how happy we were in the moment and how happy we were before we got our next allowance. I don't remember exactly when it stopped, but the chores never stopped.

However, we are a commercial fishing family and my boys help on deck in the summer which they get paid for working on deck. And then if someone asks them to help with yard work, cutting firewood, etc... my boys will go work and get paid for it.

We had chores growing up. I think my sister and I had more than my brother though - lol. Every night after dinner it was our job (me & my sister) to clean the kitchen. We loaded the dishwasher then I'd wash any other dishes and she's dry and put away. On Saturday before we were allowed to go out and play we had certain chores we had to do. Mine was dusting the shelves in the living room and I HATED it because my mom had so many knick-knacks. I had to remove each one, dust it, dust the shelf, then put them back and try to remember exactly how they were on those shelves. To my knowledge, we didn't get paid. My parents felt like our chores were a kind of "room & board". One good thing that came from all that dusting - I don't have very many knick-knacks in my house.

We never got payed but in exchange we had multiple animals and did 4-H, FFA, and rodeo. Also different sports growing up. That is the payment we got. We tried to do the same with our kids. Those activities cost a ton of money. My middle daughter tried to get payed one time and we sat her down and explained what we pay for and explained if she got payed for housework what we would pay for would stop. So we did a comparison to show her that if we payed her weekly vs what we were doing would she be able to still do those activities with that weekly pay could she do it. She never asked for pay again. 🤷🏽‍♀️. We ultimately tried to teach chores were reality and needed to be done by everyone who lived there.

I didn't growing up. I make my kids do chores. They are now 20, 17 and 15. We started with small things and now they rotate cleaning the bathrooms, hoovering and emptying the dishwasher. Plus they have to keep their bedroom floors clear in case I need to hoover on some day that isn't our regular one.

I am disabled and have people to come in (not family or friends) that do cleaning and other related tasks. I would like to hear your views on how to get these people started with doing it the way you yourself would do in your home without being bossy, rude or offensive. We would get my mothers wrath, and that was scary. But when I got married and left home, I was a confident young homemaker and didn’t need help from anyone. I have the sanitize wash on my washing machine so I wash all of my cleaning rags/mop pads together and throw them in the dryer . Never have had any issue with hairs . When I was a kid, I washed the dishes after dinner every night, cleaned the bathroom every weekend, and worked a 2 hour shift on Thursday and Fridays, then a 12 hour shift on Saturdays at my parent's shop. How much did I earn? $40 a MONTH + tips. This was 90's-early 2000's. Yeah, crappy deal.

My biggest problem is dust. I'm allergic & even though I keep the windows closed, the dust is neverending. And my allergies are just... ugh! Have they invented a dust zapper yet, that destroys it so you never have to dust again? LOL I have an air ionizer & that makes it fall out of the air & all over objects. So... I'm always having to dust everything. Just zap it & destroy it!!! LOL

I never got paid as a kid for cleaning up. I was just supposed to do it. Same with good grades at school, I never got rewarded because I was just supposed to be a good student. As simple as that.

I feel like if you set a timer, you’re setting yourself up like the cleaning task is your opponent. I’d much rather befriend cleaning by going slow, methodically, and BEING EXTREMELY ORGANIZED.
