How To Clean Lawn-Boy F Engine Exhaust Ports

This is how to clean the exhaust ports on Lawn-Boy F engine. This technique also works an the Lawn-Boy D engines. If you do this as port of yearly maintenance it will never be this bad! The way the Lawn-Boy says to do it is to use 3/8 inch a wooden dowel rod, but I didn't hove one on hand when I filmed this video and you probably don't have one either. Just use any thing plastic of wood to clean them. If you are very carful just use a very small meatal screw drive to scrape away stubborn carbon, JUST BE VERY CARFULE TO NOT SCRATCH THE PISTON.

Actually, the easiest way to do this is to turn the engine until the piston is just below the ports. Then you can easily clean the ports without worrying about damaging the piston skirt. For any carbon that does fall down into the cylinder, just set the mower upright, remove the spark plug and blow into the cylinder with an air hose. Any carbon in the cylinder will be blown back out the exhaust ports.

Very informative video ! Cleaning the 3 exhaust ports with a screw driver is somewhatlike playincg russian roulette. Better use plastic scrapers or as the manual calls for:: a hardwood dowel. I personnaly think that a lightly applied rounded brass wire brush could do the trick. Regards

Yes you’re definitely right it would be best to use a plastic scraper or a 3/8 inch wooden dowel that Lawn Boy states in the manual the only reason I didn’t use them was because I didn’t have them!

Nice video. Thanks for showing. I have a D-motor, 1974 7224, and I doubt the muffler has been off, in the 47 yrs. my family has owned it. The RPMs dropped about 1/2 over the past 5-7 yrs. Now sadly, I need a new motor. Not bad after 47 yrs. But I would like to see how bad mine looks under the muffler, like yours.

That muffler is tiny! I'm used to seeing a giant doughnut muffler/expansion chamber

That would have been on the D series engines, they had the much wider, but thinner muffler. It was also knows as the “frisbee “muffler”

LawnBoy oil cokes up the ports dontcha know. Amsoil Saber mixed 32:1 with non oxy 91.....never need to worry about the entire engine ever again. Just keep the carb and air filter clean.

You’re doing the lazy method. Just take the entire mower apart and degrease it. Soak the piston overnight in oven cleaner. Soak the exhaust muffler in oven cleaner as well.

Yea but the entire mower does not degreased. Oven cleaner sounds like the lazy and easy method to me. Thanks for suggesting it!
