How To Clean Refrigerator Coils

Just took care of this on my fridge. No dust. Dust (mere dust) is tiny floaty particles. The coils were encased in a solid fruitcake made of dander and fur, mixed together with natural or synthetic fibers, through the action of heat, moisture, chemicals, and kids slamming doors. Should be waaay more efficient now. Dare I say, amplified!

Very well done video. I suggest warning folks to be aware of their water lines. Not everyone has as much slack as you do. If they haven’t moved their fridge before, go slowly and visualize how long the line is. Be especially carefully if it is copper tubing. I have installed a braided stainless steel hose on mine for extra protection from leaks and ease of movement for cleaning. The before and after pics were very effective.

I vacuumed the coils under my family's Maytag refrigerator the other day. I was surprised by how much dirt came from the refrigerator coils and back of refrigerator. Food is colder in refrigerator and freezer. The video is very helpful. I told a friend about how to clean a dryer vent featured on Amplify DIY. A friend considered cleaning their dryer vent and dryer.

Thank you so much I've paid two different repair companies hundreds of dollars without solving the problem of my freezer over working in my refrigerator getting warm. One repair company came eight times another company came once. Not one repair or man cleaned my refrigerator coils or even pulled it out away from the wall. They replaced every part possible and failed to resolve my problem. I have an Amana top freezer/refrigerator. the coils are in the front in a cage so that a thin brush cannot be used. Vacuuming removes dust from the front; I don't have an air compressor. So I used an electric leaf blower on the lowest setting. It worked extremely well, but was messy. I had to vacuum and dust the kitchen afterwards..gave it a good cleaning. This would not be as bad if you clean it every 3 months. One could tarp the counters, table, & sink when doing this. The refrigerator runs less often now and is noticeably quieter.

I used a special appliance brush to clean the refrigerator condenser evaporator coils and vacuumed under my Maytag refrigerator/freezer. This is one of those things the manufacturers never seem to mention in the manuals, but I've been doing this annually for at least 30 years. If you do it that often, you will find that the coils never get a severe enough buildup to significantly affect efficiency in a normal home.

I have what I believe is a condensate drain tray beneath my coils, if some of that water gets flung up from the compressed air will it cause an issue? There is some circuitry on the right with the blower fan but I can't see behind the coils...

Good video!! Another brush you can use when doing this is a small (1 to 1 1/2") paint brush with bristles about 3" long. Small enough to get in close places, and soft enough to be safe, but stiff enough to do some cleaning. I had an Amana side by side fridge that had coils like the garage unit you show, and it was pretty easy to clean. My current unit is a Frigidaire Gallery side by side, and I have looked under it for the coils, and didn't see any. Methinks I need to pull that heavy dude out, and access the coils at the rear, like your kitchen unit. Good day today, as I learned something. You'd think that by 74 years, I'd know it all, but...... 😁

I recently noticed that my ice cream was much softer than usual and checked the fridge temp to find that it was much higher than usual and wouldn't get any colder. I was worried I'd have to get a repair or buy a new fridge but decided to clean the coils to see if that would help. They hadn't been cleaned since the fridge was bought 27 years ago. The first time it will take at least 45 minutes to unplug, pull out, vacuum, use brushes and compressed air, then vacuum again, put the cover back, push back into place, and plug back in. Some refrigerators roll easier than others, so a friend helping pull it out and push it back in really might help. Start with doing the backside first and use the air compressor to blow dust out the front. Then do the front after taking off the cover. You have to be pretty strong to muscle the fridge. The extra brushes and vacuum attachment are worth their weight in gold. One of the brushes can also be used to clean out your dryers lint trap. It's a real hassle, but worth it when done at least once a year. If you move into a house with an existing fridge, the first thing to do is pull out the fridge to look at it and start the cleaning.

Good information... Well done. 👍 A few bits of advice I would add... 1. Don't muscle your brushes or vacuum attachments around the refrigerant lines or between the condenser coils because if you crush them, pierce them, or compromise a braze connection you will be looking at a repair so costly that you may have to consider buying a new fridge. 2. Be gentle pulling the fridge out... Loose water line connections can disconnect and copper lines can crimp quite easily if you horse a fridge around with too much force. Know where your water shutoff valves are before you move your fridge. 3. There is a tray at the bottom of the refrigerator that holds water from the defrost cycle until it naturally evaporates. If you use compressed air to clean the coils be mindful of that fact or you may blast water out of that tray and all over your floor. This is another reason why you want to be gentle pulling the fridge out - a sudden jerk of the fridge could also spill water from that tray. Note: As long as you have no ice on the floor of your freezer (or water dripping into the fridge if your freezer is on top) and your refrigerator is operating at the correct temperatures _(about 0º F for the freezer and 35 - 40º F for the fridge)_ don't be concerned if you find no water in the defrost tray.

Another great video. I just did this with my fridge recently and used similar methods. I didn't know about the specialty brushes though and I just used a combination of vacuum tool, hand brush, and even an old paint brush to get the dust in the harder to reach areas.

Hi Stacie - thank you for your kind words! I'm very glad to hear that my videos have been helpful to you. As for temperature settings etc: Inside your fridge is a smaller version of the same sort of system that keeps your house cool in the summer. Much like a house air conditioner, there is a compressor inside the fridge that is involved in the actual cooling portion of what it does.The compressor cycles on and off periodically to maintain a specific temperature as set by a thermostat (or whatever "coldness level" or similar controls are available inside the fridge). A fridge should be able to maintain between 35-40ºF. Anything above 40ºF is not considered safe for food storage, as some microbes and bacterias can grow just above 40ºF. Also, getting much colder than 35ºF and you'll risk some things starting to freeze. If the coils are dirty, the most common effect is that the fridge compressor (the most energy-hungry component in it) needs to run for longer periods at a time, because the heat exchanger (i.e., the coils, where all the lint/dust builds up) is much less efficient. In extreme cases of dust / lint build up, even with the compressor running all the time the fridge cannot maintain the proper temperature. So - long story short: If you have no idea when the coils were last cleaned, it's time to do it. Clean coils will help a fridge run as efficiently as possible, and use as little power as possible. You can pick up a cheap fridge thermometer on Amazon (amzn.to/3ExDN68) to verify the temperatures the fridge is achieving. It can take up to 24-48 hours for a fridge to really adjust it's internal temps after a good coil cleaning.... so don't expect the internal temp to drop noticeably in the first 5 mins (or even 5 hours) after cleaning. Leave it at least overnight with the door closed before re-checking the temperature, and place the thermometer somewhere on a middle shelf. Good luck to you and your mom!

Great video! Few months ago, I noticed my older fridge was making a whining noise so I opened up the back panel for the first time in years. So dirty! I knew to clean the front coils but had no idea about the back. No more whining lol

Hi, what I see differently is, the instalation of fridge close to the oven, when the oven is very hot the fridge is going to spend more electricity. Thank you for your video, very instructive! 🙂

There are a few ...ahem *interesting*.. design decisions in this house. Unfortunately, even though we worked with the builder to make a bunch of changes during construction, we could not alter a few things. The placement of the fridge and oven was one such thing. Thanks for watching!

All of the sudden my lower drawer freezer won’t go lower than 28. It’s a Samsung RF28HMEDBSR which is about 10 years old, so I can only imagine how bad these coils are. Gonna give this a go in the AM! I’ll be heading to Home Depot for some compressor attachments and will break out my shop vac for extra protection from dust and debris. Please pray for me that this is the culprit. I really don’t want to have to purchase a new unit. I will keep you posted on if this makes a difference! Thanks for making it seem so easy!

8:35 air compressor or leaf blower or maybe shop vac output. I use a leaf blower.

Great video. Thanks for sharing- I will definately go out and purchase the types of brushes and flex crevice tool you use. I've been cleaning coils on my and other's fridges for years, but with old snow brushes, pipe cleaners, repurposed vacuum roller brushes, etc.) (If I may suggest, placing the screws back into their holes immediately after removing the panel(s), cover(s) instead of setting them aside to prevent losing or sitting/kneeling on them. I've also experienced screws with different lengths destined for specific locations). Nice tip with the cardboard!

Great video. I need more ideas and tips on getting a wedged in refrigerator out. I have a tile floor and the wheels also get stuck- I was unable to get cardboard or thin plywood under it. Thanks for any help.

You likely need a way to get more leverage under the front of the fridge. Do you have access to a hand truck or furniture dolly you can slide the front lip of under the front of the fridge? Something like this thing: amzn.to/4bFnxPZ

Yup, though exactly where they may be located will vary by model of course. I suggest you check your owners manual to see what procedure the manufacturer recommends. Good luck!
