Laura, I know this is an old video, but for the first time today, while referencing this video, I took apart my Felcos and cleaned and sharpened them all by myself! 💪 I don’t know why I’m so crazy proud of this, but thank you for being an amazing resource! 💚

I lost my felco 7 in a compost barrel. 6 years later I dumped it and found my favorite tool. Rusty And just a dirty lump. My husband worked on them like you show and thendipped the bare handle in some yellow goo which hardened to replace the old red stuff. Good as new and used as my #2 pair. The thumb catch never worked again. Annoying. Now I plan to take apart my "new" pruners. Thanks!

Great video. I do agree with the earlier comment on using a lighter touch on the sharpening and matching the angle. This said, I have been using Felco 2 pruners for 47 years now! As a professional and gardening. They are the BEST.

Great video until the sharpening part. Way too much pressure applied to that stone!!! To begin with, it is unsafe. You slip and you cut yourself badly. Secondly, if your angle is not correct (and even if it is correct) you will damage the blade. Simply find the find the bevel (correct angle), apply light to medium pressure pressure and let the tool do the work in small circular motions. Use it the same way you would use an axe puck, NOT like you would a Corona sharpener or a Speedy Sharp tool.
@benink5690
@benink5690 Жыл бұрын
You need a lot of pressure to sharpen a blade at first. Your only lessen that pressure gradually and finally when stropping the blade. I sharpened kitchen knives in a professional environment for my chefs for years. Even a kitchen knife should be sharpened with a lot of pressure, at first.
@jelsener100

@stevenkelby2169
@stevenkelby2169 10 ай бұрын
That's just not accurate. Never going to sharpen it with low pressure. No harm in high pressure. Finish off with lighter pressure, but if you need to remove some metal, you need to use some pressure.
@adkmtns5726
@adkmtns5726 10 ай бұрын
@@stevenkelby2169 "The most amount of pressure you can put on it, the better." and "Just drag it along the blade with as much pressure as you can muster." Those are two quotes from this video. Not only is this advice wrong, it is unsafe. Moreover, it contradicts Felco's own instructions on the 903. They recommend light pressure in a circular motion at a 23 degree angle. Generally speaking, if you have to apply more than medium / moderate pressure when sharpening, your grit is too high. Go to a coarser stone, and increase grit accordingly. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Thank you SO much for this really helpful video. I got stuck at one point trying to reassemble all the parts: the thumb release "spring washer" (a new term for me!) wasn't connecting properly to lock the secateurs closed. It wasn't on the same level so to speak. Then I re-watched your video and learned that I had the blade plate facing the wrong way in addition to needing to set the thumb lock in place before the main screw of the cutting blade. Et voila! Maintenant tout marche tres bien! Merci beaucoup!! Carole a Canada.

Informative video. Brass wire brushes in particular can be quite abrasive and can easily scratch the surface of aluminum. I will use a nylon bristle brush or soft kitchen scrubber. Maintain control of the sharpener during use. Follow and keep the original blade bevel, angle and radius. Medium sharpening pressure if the blade bevel has somewhat visible scratches. Light sharpening pressure for the final finish. The edge is sharp when no light reflects on the sharpened edge. If you see a tiny silver line on the edge it's still dull. Very shallow blade nicks or dings will require hand filing if desired. Otherwise replace the blade. A cheap tiny soft face mallet is best for delicate parts. An automotive magnetic parts dish will keep your parts from running away.

On cutting wires with a Felco pruner: They actually are designed for cutting wires!! Check out the semi-circle at the hinge end. That will hold the wire when. cutting. It keeps the wire away from the blade itself.

@FELCOTool
@FELCOTool 3 жыл бұрын
Hi David, yes the FELCO 905 is a new accessory that has recently been launched.It is a compact tool and combines several simple maintenance operations. A few strokes with the standard 90° tungsten carbide sharpener helps maintain the cutting edge of the blades. For finer sharpening, a second carbide stone ensures a perfectly sharp cutting edge. Finally, two 7 mm and 8 mm hexagon sockets allow for easy adjustment and tightening of the various moving elements of the pruning shears. But it cannot be used on left-handed or anvil pruning shears or power tools.

You can get new handle sleeves from Felco. You cut the old ones off and slide the new ones on. They are quite loose when you get them but once you’ve fitted them submerge the handles in boiling water and the new ones ‘shrink to fit’ and that’s you good to go for another 10 years or so !

get an 8mm combo wrench it's cheaper and works fine too. add a 7mm one if you want to tamper with the locking mechanism if it's not working properly. if it does lock properly, leave it alone. 😉 if you want to use a ratchet, a 1/4" one will be easier to use and less bulky for that task.

Why WD-40 is not recommended?
@macaroni8cheese
@macaroni8cheese 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for posting! Very informative and great explanation of the disassemble and rebuilding. I do have to say though the sharpening technique described had me cringing. You should never apply that kind of pressure to force anything across the cutting edge. The file should glide smooth with little to no pressure. Plz be safe when sharpening anything and maybe consider cut resistant gloves. Also, I think you missed mentioning a very important feature when you spoke of sometimes cutting wire and possibly having to replace the blade. There is a notch on the very inside edge that is specifically designed for light wire cutting. You can see it when the pruners are wide open. Again, your video is great! It helped me and I’m sure countless others. Thank you! I hope not to sound like I’m “mansplaining”! lol, just wanted to add a few things I picked up in the 40+ years I’ve been an arborist. PS - I find Scotch bright pads work way better than Brillo for that out of the box new look. ✌️🌿🌲

might be some months late but to sum up why WD-40 is not a great lubricant for anything: It's a water-displacement spray/penetrating oil; it's a solvent for losening rust and removing grime. The lubricating oils in it is fairly volatile and evaporates leaving very little left to do actual lubrication (only around 15% of the actual content of WD-40 is (volatile) lubricants). It's good for lubing up rusty or tight parts to get them moving as its penetrating, but those things should be lubed up with a proper lubricant afterwards to ensure long-term lubrication (can be things like lithium grease, silicone lubricant, brunox etc). WD-40 do sell actual lubricants, both silicone and lithium, but the famed multi-spray is not a substitute for proper lubricants.

This lady is gorgeous but she didn't sharpen the edge at all. She only scratched the edge along...and rather crudely. Felco have essentially put up a video of their own blade ruination. Perhaps the idea was to demonstrate that anyone can sharpen a Felco without fear...or most basic knowledge...or safety concerns (some omissions were noted in comments). Ladies, for the love of God, just give your Felco tools to your lesser halves to sharpen (we do get bored otherwise) and don't get your beautiful hands dirty! Let us, orcs do the job (sound of thumps against a hairy chest here). For those who believe that they should still sharpen the blades: 1) Clean in soapy water first. Then submerge into water mixed with citric acid (can buy a pack literally anywhere). You will be amazed just how shiny the blade will become (if not stainless). You will probably then be dumping most of your metals household tools into citric acid after learning how well it works thereafter. 2) After disassembly, sharpen the blade part separately i.e. when it is completely detached, much, much easier. 3) Sharpen the blade using water stones or Edge Pro or Tormek or lansky's at least. 3x times easier, 100x better quality that will last for much longer. 4) Sharpen across the blade not along. Alas the beautiful lady in the video didn't actually sharpen the blade, but only created a micro rip along the edge which won't last at all. 5) Assemble back and apply any water repellent or a water dispenser a.k.a. WD-40 or ballistol. 6) Enjoy your shiny, super sharp, super durable new edge. Sharpening is a whole separate art. In Japan people dedicate their entire careers to sharpening techniques.

Oh brother. I think the objective here was to make a video. Maintenance doesn't need to be so involved.
