... many thanks! I have boxes of these old silver watches that barely run. My roommate is all about the silver value. But I enjoy then to display for the workmanship of the makers.

Did the same with silver teaspoons, without the table salt, and that also works fine :)

I know this is odd but I prefer the polished look of "Silverine" or "Silverode" to real silver. I know the value isn't there just that shine! Of course you can give me gold over either! Great video.

Thank you for this great video. I have one quick question: I assume this type of cleaning with that chemical reaction removes not only the tarnish, but also any grease and oils as well. So...when your done with the cleaning, do you lubricate the hinges of the front and back covers? (I have a watch with an identical case that needs a cleaning like this, but I notice that the covers are already just a bit stiff to open... If I do this cleaning maybe that will loosen them by eliminating the grime buildup, but I was wondering if I should oil them a bit afterward...). Thanks.

Love your videos Richard. Could this process be used on a tricolor watch, as in silver base but with ornate decorations on the front and back that are yellow, green and orange?

Hi D E, thank you. I am not sure that it would be ok. The tin foil and the bicarbonate of soda set up a reaction with the Silver oxide but I am unsure of how this would react with the other metals involved. If I ever find an old case of similar construction I will give it a go! Thanks for the question. Richard

Hello I have an old pocket watch. The seconds hand has come out. Is it repairable or there is no way to restore it ?? Its a super old watch

Thanks Richard, I’ll have a go at this on a silver pocket watch I have. It’s a cylinder escapment and no keyless works, same key to wind and set hands. How old could it be do you think? Thanks, liking your videos.

What did you use to take it out of the pocket watch case what did you use to remove the hinge

How would you maintain this appearance after the watch has been restored? Is this method safe for a modern watch such as the Tudor BB 925 which has very good water resistance? The watch also has brushed surfaces that one wouldn’t want to see polished away by say a polishing cloth. Regards

The watch has just been found. It was given to my father in law on his 21st birthday. The writing inside the back cover is dated, 22/2/28.

Must the crystal be removed to do this?
@richardperrettwatchmaker
@richardperrettwatchmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason... Not necessary... the crystal will be fine remaining in the case so long as it is glass not plastic. Hope this helps. Richard

can You do that with gold filled cases?
@richardperrettwatchmaker
@richardperrettwatchmaker 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Devin ... you could but it would not have the same dramatic effect. The best way to a clean gold fill (or pure gold) case is to wash it gently in warm water with just a little detergent (for dishes) and then just rinse and wipe dry. Be careful of using anything abrasive as the gold fill is relative soft compared to other metals and it with scratch pretty easily. Hope this helps. Richard

I'm taking a serious look at the brand new Tudor Black Bay 58 925 model, which has a brushed sterling silver case. Tudor says it won't tarnish because of other metals they use in the alloy, though the conventional wisdom is, "well, let's HOPE they're right about that." If a brushed silver case like the Tudor 925 did, in fact, start to turn grey, do you think your toothbrush and bicarbonate and salt method might be a way to maintain it? And/or just the Silvo, taking care not to over polish it? Silver watch cases might coming back, people!

I just searched Google and found similar suggestions for Gold alloys used for jewellery. Also Ammonia is used for cleaning Gold alloys. This reminds me of the smell the ultrasound cleaning fluid gives off. So maybe you are best off with an ultrasound cleaner and a fitting cleaning agent.

Can I use this method to get any grime and so on off of the inner mechanical parts ?

No Paul. The water will very rapidly corrode anything steel. Richard

Richard Perrett Watchmaker what would you recommend at cleaning the inner mechanical parts with stuff from home ? I was thinking maybe Vinegar (maybe slightly watered down) so to remove greese and stubborn dirt but hope not to erode the parts ?
@richardperrettwatchmaker
@richardperrettwatchmaker 4 жыл бұрын
@@PaulBeard1990 ideally you would use a purpose watch cleaning solution and rinse but these are pretty expensive. Lighter fluid would do the trick for a bit of tinkering. Please do not have water in the mix anywhere. It will attack the mechanism rapidly. Hope this helps. Richard

@@PaulBeard1990 Richard is right. I use Naptha(lighter fluid) in a small jar, then add jar and parts in an ultrasonic machine that has a out 1/2 cup of water in it. Do NOT put the lighter fluid directly in the ultrasonic. 10 mins then a rinse with isopropyl alcohol drip dry and dry it with a hairdryer. Works pretty good.

Don't put pallets or hairspring rollers in it. The naphtha with mess with the shellac and dissolve it loosening the jewels.

Hi Richard, ive just had virtually the exact same pocket watch, similar hallmarks etc, Mine is an 1891. Ive removed the whole movement now and i`m ready to clean the case. Can this method be done with the glass still in situ, i believe mine is the original glass and don`t want to risk removing it in case i damage it. Cheers. Glen West Midlands. UK

Really? Why? I work on Rolex all week and I work on Seiko too .... as a result I have learnt a great deal about how these watches are put together. The Rolex 3135 is a way better movement than the Seiko NH35A but the Seiko is still a good movement; it just costs about $9K less. The Invicta case design is very (and I mean very ) similar to the Rolex Submariner case. $80 for an Invicta Pro Diver is a very good buy ... this is just a fact. It is tricky, no very tricky, to construct a compelling argument against a Seiko NH35A inside a Stainless Steel case built to pretty much the same specification as the Rolex Submariner. Richard

@@richardperrettwatchmaker With the possible exception of your Invicta Pro Diver, Invictas are gaudy and trashy IMO. www.google.com/search?q=invicta+bubble+face+watch&safe=off&sxsrf=ALeKk01Op4hPl0scvW92AWPc_BTWvJbXPQ:1593988996204&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=TrLQ7IetOA4g_M%252CTaDGZM9L51ei2M%252C_&vet=1&usg=AI4_-kT6pZ_E4hVNkvA55FKRbxAXQsSG-Q&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjl1pPfl7fqAhX5KDQIHc_xB8IQ9QEwCHoECAoQIg&biw=1920&bih=975#imgrc=Ef-EzSQhYS3RPM
