I have that very same watch with it's original chain and two keys! I'm so happy to see another one! And it's a big loud boy, let me tell you! Mine doesn't have dents in the case though. Beautiful and thumbs up!

Nice work! I have a 14k gold filled Hamilton pocket watch, the only thing I have left from my grandpa, and it means the world to me. I had the crystal replaced, but the jeweler was only able to get me a plastic one, and that’s the only thing I’ve ever had done to it. It has a few dings/dents, doesn’t work, the loop at the top is deformed (the jeweler said he couldn’t do anything about that), and the face is cracked. One day soon I hope to have it back in operating condition. He told me just to have it running again would be $175 give or take I believe, so I can’t imagine the price altogether with the cosmetic work. Despite all of its flaws, I really love it and it has a lot of sentimental value to me. I plan on using it regularly one day, but it is quite old so I’m not sure. I want to say 1940s-1960s.

Yes. The price is about average. A glass crystal fit on the watch can cost from 20 to 80. Most jewelers don’t work on watches but send those repairs to watchmakers. I always tell my customers that there is no price you can put on sentimental but we should always be reasonable. If the watch runs, make sure you wind it every few weeks. The more you run it the better it will work.

You need a watchmaker who specialized in pocket watches. Often the chrystals and bows are gettable but they are specialized suppliers. Send it to grand central watch in NY. It will be costly. To service and old watch like that they take it all apart and clean it, hours of work, and if it's not running the work involved is even more. I'd expect a lot more than 175.

Late reply but consider JDRichard. He has a channel here on YT and, while an amateur, is really careful, knowledgeable and insists on using professional tools. He’s somewhere near Ottawa, Ontario

Hey man I have Elgin pocket watch(hunter case). And it has dents on the opposite side where the lock of hunter case is can you tell me why it is happening?
@watchesandjewelry
@watchesandjewelry 4 жыл бұрын
Good question. Without seeing the dents it’s hard to tell why however. Sometimes watchmakers will crease the case to make it catch easier. Cheap way out instead of a full case repair sadly.

Just a side question, if I may: At what point (if ever) would you use plating on a silveroid case? If you did it, would it be a silver anode, a nickel anode or would you use a scrap silveroid case? Thoughts?
@watchesandjewelry
@watchesandjewelry Жыл бұрын
It much of a scrapper. I like to do restoration on cases. Dings and dents can be repaired. If the case needs restoration, or plating, I would make it a decision if value. Antique watches have three factors of value. Retail, wholesale and sentimental value. Additionally, you need to factor in the cost of plating as well as if it will actually make the case look better. That’s typically a 50/50 call depending on its condition. Right now, I’m working on a Waltham keywind from 1863. I’ll remove the dents and polish it up. No plating. It’s more valuable that way as a civil war era item. Hope that makes sense.

@Peter Grande Thanks so much for the response. I am hoping to develop some sort of technique for addressing the sort of surface issues common to the silveroid cases, but I am just starting off. Removing dirt and grime is not so challenging as coming up with some sort of treatment for the areas where oxide has had its way. Thanks again.

Great work. Can a dent on the front bezel near the glass also be removed? (Waltham, fairly identical case to the one shown here)
@watchesandjewelry
@watchesandjewelry 4 жыл бұрын
It would really depend on the extent of the damage. Usually if there are no sharp creases they can be repaired

@@watchesandjewelry The dented watch is a recently purchased a 18S 17J Model 1883 Waltham that's all gummed up/dirty. I only bought it because all the screw heads looked intact, leading me to believe the watch was not messed with.

That model is a strong runner. Difficult part to get would be the pallet fork only. As long as it isn’t broken, and the watch is not rusty (lol) it should clean and run well. As far as the case, especially the dent you mentioned, send a picture to me through facebook.com/my jewelry bench. Use the messenger feature, and I’ll get it. Pics help me a lot, but of course, nothing like seeing it in person.

I find it very sad that the majority of people cannot except dents as part of the watches history and character after all it's a mechanical face lift is it for the sake of vanity?

Over twenty years, I have to say that most people wanted the cases left alone if they stayed in the family. It seems that, to me anyhow, when a watch comes in that someone bought somewhere, is when they want a restoration
