There are several possible reasons for that musty stink
Window air conditioners have a drip tray that is a necessary component of the system. This collection of water, along with heat and dust, allow for some pretty nasty “muck” to collect over time. The smell associated with this stuff is best described as being sour, moldy, or mildewy.
If there's a drainage problem, water may have pooled and mildew may have grown on the filter, condenser coil, or somewhere else inside.

“Dirty Sock Syndrome” may refer to when a foul-smelling, mold- or mildew-like odor comes from your air conditioner when it is running, keep in mind the smell may only happen sometimes. This may happen when moisture, dust, and dirt build up on your AC system's evaporator coil, inviting bacteria and mold to multiply. For mold and bacteria to accumulate, they need two things: organic material, and moisture. The dust and dirt that is throughout any home, and the particulates collected by HVAC air filters provide plenty of organic materials (remember that most house dust is made of dead skin cells). The other part of the equation, moisture, can be found in most homes, particularly during the most humid times of the year. I live in Florida where it is really humid. The result is buildup and smell.
It is really important to know how to clean a dirty ac unit. If a air conditioner is dirty, the ac unit may not blow cold air and may not last as long. I just tried this and it worked. I am so grateful because I couldn’t stand the smell of my air conditioner anymore. It was making me sick and it wasn’t that old of an air conditioner, but I have one that doesn’t drain water out of it and the mildew and bacteria, I’m sure had built up so bad, I’m so grateful because I do not have to buy a new air conditioner. You could try putting the bleach and soap mix in a normal spray bottle and then use the pump sprayer with clean water to rinse. Obviously the pump sprayer is an extra expense, but if you don't have a hose, that's probably your closest substitute (unless you hook up a hose to an indoor sink).

I have the exact same unit and I actually took it apart and cleaned it up but couldnt clean the back coil properly and I still have a little smell coming from it ugh now might try this method taking it out of my second floor window such a headache but thanks for the video hopefully it will work

Hey there! I stumbled upon your video and I'm grateful that I did. So I have an air conditioner that literally sits outside the window of my motorhome and blows the cool air through the window because it's too large to fit in the window. It's maybe a month or so old and we've had a lot of rain I'm in Arizona and it's the monsoon season and it doesn't drain so I tilt it every other day to get the water out of the bottom. If I had drill I drill a hole so it would be draining constantly. So ever since the season began when I turn the air conditioner on it has a funk and so I think I understand why I'm just not exactly sure what to do about it other than what I said. And could you please tell me the name of the unit that you're using for this video cuz it might be small enough to fit in my motorhome window...❤

Hey how’s it going, So I recently moved to an apartment second floor the apartment doesn’t have air conditioning so i bought a $300 window a/c unit and had it installed. @@KendallTodd thanks man. It's great resource to have but I see even you struggled taking off the front and you're a manly man handy guy. I'm worried as a normal joe I'd break something and ruin the unit 😭 I tried taking out some screws today and the whole thing started creaking. Maybe next winter or whenever you clean it again you can do it without the speed up and talk us through it. Frigidaire's acs number 1 complaint is that the front is hard to come off because they put the electronics on it instead of off to side like the LGs

If it is the same make and model, on the remote control there is a button for "Light". Pushing it will either keep them on all the time, or allow the indicator lights to turn off after a few seconds once a change is made.

Loved watching your video Todd and I know how to clean my AC unit now but I do have a question for you. That's how you cleaned it in the outside but my AC has mildew on the inside and around the air vents where the air comes out of so everytime I turn it on all you can smell is the mold/mildew smell and you can see it. So how can I clean it from the inside to get rid of the mildew and without taking it out n apart ? Can I just spray it with the mixture like it is?

Thank you for posting this video. I will try to resolve the odor this way vs. taking the A/C apart. I have a Whirlpool W5WCE128XW 12,000 btu which has been discontinued, yet it is not the usual disposable A/C's that one purchases at the big box stores. I believe this could be serviced and it looks and sounds great. I noticed an odor today, when I turned it on and although it lasts just seconds, I'd prefer to not smell or inhale it. I'll give this a shot and report back. 😎
