I've been doing yoga for about 15 years. I sweat a lot, I do hot vinyasa / powerflow/etc yoga about four or five times a week. I mean there is a puddle all over the place after I finish yoga. I find after every couple of months or so I just throw it in the washer on the most delicate cycle with cold water with a tiny bit of tide. Pull the mat out of the washer throw it over the banister leave it there for a day in the shade and it dries perfectly. And it smells wonderful. Honestly, wiping it down after every single practice I find is a bit of a hassle I also find it doesn't really do a very thorough job. That's been my experience.

I’m so glad I saw your comment, I’m feeling the same way! I started doing really hot yoga daily - it’s 110° F with 60% humidity so I’m drenched, my mat towel is drenched and the mat beneath it is sitting in a sloshy puddle. I go daily so I don’t know if my mat is just constantly damp at this point (I do hang it to dry over the banister). I also now have a body print (kind of like negative film haha) on my mat. I like this idea of throwing it in the wash…but the washer I have has an agitator in the middle. Is yours kind of rubbery? Will it disintegrate you think even on the most gentle cycle and cold cycle. I’m on the verge of fucking around and finding out 😂

My yoga mat has some stains on them I tried vinegar , soap, wipes and it didn't work so I finally put it in the washing machine and the stains are still there, do you think it's time for new mat? and if so what kind do you recommend, thank you!

Rallou thank you for the lovely comment! I'm actually in the process of researching cork mats. Are you happy with yours? Ok so regarding cleaning it, cork mats are considered self cleaning thanks to their antimicrobial properties. However, for a quick clean once a week you wan wipe it using a soft cloth and cold water. For a deeper clean you can use a solution like I mentioned in the video: 3 parts water and 1 part vinegar. Just remember to air dry after cleaning and if possible, after each practice, especially if its a sweaty one!

@@ThisYogaLife-ak Hello! Thank you for your reply! I do air my mats as long as I can. With regards to cork mats, I found to be the only one that is not slippery. I may slip a bit until I warm up, but after that no slipping at all. I also use cork blocks, as I find them to be better for my wrists. I have 2 cork mats, but my favourite is from Lotuscrafts (not sponsored), but they can be a bit costly, but definately worth it.

Just always remember to let your mat air dry after practice and after wiping it down :-)

good information! i was looking at how to lean my B Mat as it seems to discolor or have a dirty look to it after 6 months or so. Not a big deal but my Jade mat and my cheap travel mats never did this. B Mat is my favorite, i think it is 6 mm and my jade was paper thin in comparison and somewhat slipperier where the B mat as your other video mentions is almost too catchy and I have caught a toe once, though Im not ashtanga feet through the hands capable, mostly power and my handstand workout practice. appreciate this~

I'm sorry but I have to ask. In your other video about DIY mat cleaners you said that Manduka advises not to use vinegar to clean their mats. Soooo...what's up with this video? And also, Manduka says not to shower the mat, which you did in the other video (and I absolutely would do too). So I would really like to know how to best preserve my mat. I've always washed my previous mat with soap and water in the shower, but since the Manduka is very expensive I don't want to ruin it. But I'm also very inclined to think that they say not to use soap or other common products in order to sell their own cleaner, which I do not intend to buy. I think that if I don't find a convincing solution I'll just stick to my soap and water in the shower method. I cannot see how that could ruin a supposedly high quality (and expensive) mat. Thank you!
@ThisYogaLife-ak
@ThisYogaLife-ak 2 жыл бұрын
Good question!! Ok so when I made this first video, I showed the most common yoga mat cleaning solution (water and vinegar). That’s what I’ve been using on all my mats and I’ve never had any issues. When I then did research for the DIY cleaners almost a year later I found a lot more do this and don’t do that information. For example, if you have a rubber yoga mat it is advised not to use vinegar. However, Manduka’s rubber mat cleaner has vinegar. Plus they say don’t shower your mat. But Manduka is closed-cell PVC so I don’t see what that’s an issue. I will say you’re right about the brand cleaners. Almost all mats advice you to clean your mat using their own brand cleaners! And so after a lot of research I’ve come to the conclusion that the best way to keep a yoga mat clean is 1. Wipe with a damp cloth after every sweaty practice. 2. Always allow to air-dry after practice. And 3. Clean with vinegar/soap/baking soda/brand cleaner once every few weeks just to keep it as hygienic as possible, I hope that all makes sense :-)

Hi Olga! Interesting question! Ok I just checked, and apparently vinegar typically contains 5-8% acetic acid by volume. Aim for something in that region and if you feel it smells too much then dilute it more with water. Hope that helps!

Yes you are completely right! When I made the first video I showed the most common DIY yoga mat cleaner (and the one I’ve been using on my mats). And then when I made the more updated video I did research into what each manufacturer recommends. And it seems that Jade doesn’t recommend vinegar because it’s a rubber yoga mat. Great Video! Although another creator on the platform has told me that even vinegar will degrade natural rubber over time... Do you feel as if your solution has prematurely degraded your jade harmony? Also how do you feel about a weekly water/neutral ph soap?
@ThisYogaLife-ak
@ThisYogaLife-ak 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting question! The truth is that the Jade Harmony is prone to wear and tear. The water vinegar solution is what Jade recommends on their website, and so I would have no idea whether it was the vinegar or the dynamic practice that made it worse. I don't see why a weekly water/neutral ph soap solution wouldn't work! However, keep in mind that if you have a dynamic practice, at some point you will notice bits coming off, mainly where the hands and feet are.

(sorry for late reply) According to the Alo Warrior website, here are their recommendations: "The moisture-wicking, anti-odor Alo Warrior Yoga Mat, made of 100% polyurethane leather on top and 100% rubber on the bottom, should be wiped down with a microfiber towel after each use. We recommend a 1:20 solution of oil-free soap or vinegar and warm water to keep it clean between uses."
