We use biodegradable sponges and use them until they're discolored, and then chuck them in the compost. We started only buying cleaning tools that are biodegradable. Throwing away foam sponges every few weeks, a plastic toilet brush, a plastic toothbrush - all of these things add up and will literally never go away.
@lionfellinlovewlamb3 жыл бұрын
What brand of sponges do you use?
@RaccoonLaundry3 жыл бұрын
@@lionfellinlovewlamb Zefiro! The sponges also have a little loop on the top so we're able to hang them off of the faucet to dry. We use Zefiro sponges, dish scrubbers, finger nail brushes - they have so much and it's all home compostable. I feel a lot less guilty throwing them away, so I'm more likely to swap it out for a new one when it's time. :) Highly recommend them.

@@RaccoonLaundry that’s great! How long would you say they last you?
@RaccoonLaundry3 жыл бұрын
@@princessaome Because I let them dry out after almost every use, and because I run them through the dishwasher occasionally to give them a good clean, I find myself replacing them every maybe 3 months of almost daily use? Which sounds like a long time, but honestly, they keep going a good job so I keep using them until they feel fairly flimsy. They come in three packs and you can get them online pretty easily, plastic free! :) I don't think I'd ever go back to plasticy sponges. Because they're loofahs, they're soft enough to use on nonsick but still do a great job with harder messes

Question about cleaning toilet brushes in a bucket. I’d like to but it grosses me out thinking about the bucket ever being used for anything other than toilet brushes. Do all of you who do the bucket method have a separate bucket designated for only cleaning toilet brushes??
@amandalashley38193 жыл бұрын
I have never used a sponge for dishes. I use a dishcloth, I swap out for a clean one every day, I let it dry over night and then put it in a container under my sink, at the end of the week I boil all of my dishcloths for 20 minutes. Once they've cooled off I pour out the water and add the dishcloths to my laundry. My dishcloths almost never sour and always come out smelling fresh. If I ever do have a sour dishcloth I just add some baking soda to the boiling water, problem solved.

I clean our toilet twice a week I believe the brush stays clean enough like that because of the toilet bowl cleaner and I rinse it while flushing the cleaner out then while i leave it to dry between the seat and toilet bowl i spray it with dissenfectant and wipe down the handle of the brush. Everytime the toilet brush bowl looks dirty i spray it with an all purpose cleaner then wipe with a paper towel, getting every part bottum and inside included. Then dissenfect that as well. But since I wouldn't touch my brush part I think this is a great idea I'll have to try it thank you!

I have taken vases that I have gotten with flower arrangements and I put a mixture of Pine-Sol and hot water and have the toilet brush in that so that it kills bacteria when it is in it's spot waiting to be used. Take your gloves and wash them in a basin, flip them inside out, wash the inside, then hang upside down to dry, when outside is dry turn them inside out let dry, when they are dry fully, sprinkle powder inside of glove shake well. This is how gloves were washed in hospitals before sterilizing. They no longer do this because of the use of disposable gloves (old RN)
@SuDaixi3 жыл бұрын
For toilet cleaning we no longer use brushes at all. There are these pods that you can add to the toilet (either inside the bowl with a reusable hook or inside the place where water gets collected where it just floats in water) that disinfects and clean the toilet every time you flush (an effortless clean as you go method). And if you have a bidet, those usually cut down on toilet paper use (although we partially changed over to reusable washable cloths anyway for when the bidet is taking too long to dry you off) and also have a self-cleaning option for both the bidet itself and if you close the lid for the inside of the toilet. With those 2 methods, we stopped having to clean our toilet altogether. The only thing it needs is an occasional sanitary wipe down on the outside to collect any dust and germs it may have collected. And since most of it is automatic (the chemical with the flush, and the rinse with bidet) it just takes off a chore from an already long list of chores. Plus I think it is most people's least favorite thing to do as far as chores go.

Hot soapy water with ammonia added will clean off years of greasy cooking. For the tops of the cupboards use some newspapers to line so you won't have to clean again. When cooking greasy foods, be sure the exhaust hood fan is on and always have splatter screens covering pans while frying. If you can, avoid greasy cooking methods.
