I cleaned the DW filter where I lived. It was a used, replacement DW and it smelled. The family there didn't seem to notice. That filter was covered in a grey slime. Horrible, gut retching. I scrubbed the entire DW. Much better but the family didn't even say thanks. (I rented a room from these people w/kitchen access).

Perfect timing. Mine is smelly and I insist on rinsing lol. The theory your dishwasher needs goo on it to make it work is nonsensical lol. Thanks a lot!!!😊

At least once a month I remove the filter and clean it. Also, the round filter in the bottom comes out (easily) to clean.

Do you use cleaning vinegar or distilled vinegar?
