There is no one-size-fits-all solution to dressing a candle, but the technique below illustrates one method. Choose and select whichever approach works for you in your practice! You don’t have to dress or anoint your candle if you don’t want to. Simply choosing a corresponding candle color will be fine.
Cleanse your candle with Moon Water, smoke, crystals, moonlight, or the cleansing method of your choice. Some practitioners feel that simply focusing your gratitude and positive energy on your candle is enough to cleanse it thoroughly.
Intentions are an essential aspect of candle magic. Infuse the candle with your energy, determination, and power by being precise about what you seek in your intentions.
Adding oils and herbs gives your spell or intention a bit of extra oomph. Cover your candle in a natural oil like olive, almond, jojoba, grapeseed, or coconut; avoid using too much oil, or it may affect how it burns. Oil helps to create a pathway for your desire to manifest in the physical world.
You may also choose to add spit or blood to your candle. Many spiritual practitioners prefer this method because not only is it very personal, but also free!

for the clove candle you might try poking a little hole in the candle after warming it and see if the clove would go in like that. Kinda like you do with oranges to make sachets at Yule.

Great simple tutorial..thank you..cloves sticking into candles..use ur skewer and heat it..dig holes in candle and stick cloves into them, heat of wax should seal them in. Good luck x

I’m sure you have written about it somewhere but do you have any resources for herbs and their powers? I grow so many but I am not sure where to find consistent sources that remind me what the herbs are best used for :)

It's funny you ask because writing the correspondences for herbs is always on my to-do list! I've currently only written about Lavender's magical properties (I’ll leave a link below in case you’re interested). Scott Cunningham's book “Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs” is great if you’re only looking for herbal correspondences. I wouldn’t recommend anything else, though, because there’s a lot of cultural appropriation and stereotypical gender designations in his work (which he openly admits in his resources section). Personally, I like to think about how an herb works in Nature, in our bodies, or for medicinal purposes. For example, lavender helps ease anxiety and is very calming. It also brings me and the bees a lot of joy! So I believe those would correspond with lavender's magical workings too! After that, I use my intuition to determine which use works best for me. I believe it’s so much more accurate than anything a book or blog tells you. I hope that helps! Hi Amanda - just a suggestion following this video... perhaps if you microwave/heat the coconut oil, then add the herb mix and pour into the channels of the larger candles. Also, as suggested by @leauphillips3563 below, using a metal straw or spike of some sort to poke holes into the wax for the cloves to sit in? (When I add cloves to roasting pork, I'll make small slits (or X's) in the pork skin for the cloves to sit in, which works really well). I also love how, using what's to hand (or mouth 😆) as tools for magic is such a natural thing. When we consider the practices of the past centuries, the practitioners weren't always able to access obscure ingredients, so they used what they had, or what they could grow, or what they could fashion out of the raw materials around them. I feel that, bringing in the elements and nature adds an honesty to our intentions.

yes you can, but don't use too much or it will affect the burn. Remember, a little goes a long way. :)
