Ramona's Plumber, Greg Chick, shows how to clear a soft clog in a toilet using a closet auger. Using this inexpensive tool (about $35 at the home store), and a little practice you can save hundreds of dollars in plumbing service-call costs with each use.
For this video, Greg created a clog in a toilet drain using paper towels. During the unclogging process there is some rust colored water visible in the bowl - That IS rust from the auger itself, not anything nastier that that.
Greg talks about how to diagnose if the plug is in the toilet, or farther down the drain; he talks about the closet auger and demonstrates its use; and how to check for a common reason the toilet clogged in the first place.

I Just bought two kind of toilet Auger too today. The first one is not worth a dime !!! The second one is a Ridgi K-6 and it's a reel good Auger but that model is really expensive here in Quebec Canada. It cost me 70$ + taxes at Home Depot but it's still less expensive then a plumber Call. Thank you so much for your video !!!

Great video sir. As a career plumber myself its refreshing seeing people actually showing the correct way of doing things. SO many showing people putting in multiple jugs of Drano and such in a tiny room with no ventilation and its showshing all over them and everything else. Watch people like this man in this video people. He has years of on the job training and the proper skills to demonstrate this! Life is not a series of shortcuts and life hacks. Life takes skill, hardwork and grit.....and quite a bit of luck on occasion lol

Hey, Long story short... after going #2. I was able to flush, but now when i flush it comes back up real high then goes back down to basically where theres no water in bowl then come back up to the normal level... Any thoughts? .. Oh and I didn't put that much toilet paper in it... but ya know.. I went #2.so :)

@@visionquest414 now is the time to get the proper plunger and get to work. Make sure you don't put more toilet paper... Or anything else solid in it. Plunge and plunge and it should clear up. You can try hot water and degreasing dish soap. No boiling water but hot water. Many times when it drains very slowly like you describe it will be fine in few hours on its on.

@@visionquest414 I didn't realize it had been days clogged. I was thinking it had happened a couple of hours before you posted. A auger/snake is a great tool to have around. Husky is a Walmart in house brand so hopefully it works. Do you have kids around or any way something could have been flushed without you knowing? It could also be the connection at the flange where your toilet sits in the waste pipe. It has a thick wax ring that makes a seal and eventually the wax breaks down. That's approaching worst case scenario though. Do you have a septic tank or are you connected to a city or county sewage system?

Thank you so much for making this video!! Fixed my clog on my second try, in less than 5 minutes. My toilet had been clogged for 3 days. I had tried 4 different plungers with no luck (none of them had a tight enough seal on my new-ish toilet). I had spent over an hour plunging, and got blisters on my hands. I also tried using dish soap and hot water with no results. I was scared to try a new tool that I knew nothing about, but this video helped me tremendously.

Thank you for this excellent video, Paul! We have one toilet that has always been problematic. I'm fairly competent with an auger, but I didn't think to check the level adjustment in the tank. Turns out that someone long ago, probably to "save water" bent the float rod such that the tank level was about 3 inches too low. A couple of quick bends, and now perfect siphon action! Thank you again.

Very helpful. Best toilet auger video I found. Appreciated that he said 3 foot auger was good enough for most situations. Also appreciated how he showed issues in the tank that can cause weak flushes. I bought a 3 foot auger after this video and it cleared on the first probe. Plumbers helper had done nothing to clear things. Water tube had disconnected from the refill tube in my Kohler toilet and that must have caused my soft block, as he showed. My flush siphon was weakened. Thank you for posting this!

Thank you so much for this presentation. After plunging, chemicals etc. I had assumed a new toilet was required. But after investing in a $6 Walmart toilet auger my toilet runs smoothly. I was surprised how little visible result there was, only a slight milkiness in the water, but it worked. I agree the $6 auger is poorly made, but I handled it with care and hopefully it will last a few more rounds.

Great video watch this one along with another. For my my issue I bought the 6ft one because I needed the extra 3ft to go beyond the toilet and well into the main drain below the toilet. I bought the 6ft one from Amazon. One suggestion would be to throughly clean it good. Then coat it good with some kind of of rust prevention spray. Then I store it in large garbage bag in my garage for next use. Just a little warning these things can get a little nasty after use. Preparation beforehand is must which I am really happy I did.

You pointed out something very important that most people do not realize about unplugging a stopped toilet. And in my experience a lot of people don't know it. That is taking the cover off the tank before you flush so that you can close the flapper to prevent an overflow. Very smart. I enjoyed your video. I rarely have a clogged toilet and usually get it with the plunger and taking the cover off the tank. Nonetheless, it is nice to know how to use the toilet auger as well. Thanks!

I was the one with the "seashells" in the bowl that you talked to. I shut off the water and put 2 gallons of white vinegar in the tank and bowl. Hopefully that will get rid of the seashells. I was given a quote for $325 today 1/16/2022 for a toilet that wasn’t flushing. I called a company that does emergency plumbing. I nearly swallowed my tongue when he told me the price. Anyway, he said my toilet was probably clogged and he may have to remove the toilet to get to the clog. He planned to call me tomorrow. The call somehow got disconnected not by me. Anyway, I decided there was no way I was going to pay that price. So I asked one of my relatives do we have a snake. I was told yes we do. I went into the basement and found an auger. Great video. You just saved me a very expensive plumber visit. In my case though I was able to get the job done with the $8 auger vs the $30 one by ridgid. Hopefully this was just a one time deal and I will never need to use it again. I must have pushed the blockage through as nothing came back into the bowl. It flushes now.

Thanks, this video was very helpful. I was able to clear my toilet with a $8 auger from Home Depot and now have the knowledge the use it anytime I need it. Also I'm glad I watched the video all the way to the end because when my toilet fills the top with water it just leaks out of the nuts instead going to the fill tube. I thought this wouldn't be a problem because the water still gets in but now I know I'll have to fix it. The toilet did seem to flush weak, now I know why.

Thank you for this video. We've got a blocked toilet and I wanted to know what would resolve the issue without troubling the landlady. I watched the ad at the beginning and clicked the link.

Still helpful in 2022, 7 years ago. I got the 6ft Ridgid. My husband held it and I cranked up and down. I got scared when the auger twisted out into the bowl. I was able to retract and pull the auger out. It takes getting use to but it works. I think this can be connected to a power drill. Look for that video. It works. Maybe the smaller one at Home Depot would be easier to handle, $17. The problem is you cannot return augers which makes sense. Thanks.😊

Great video. Your video is the best uger video because it was more realistic. everyone else just pulled out the piece of cloth or paper. You were moving it around, up and down. It was more realistic. Thanks again, love your page!

Thanks for the video. My new toilet bubbles when flushed, we recently had a whole replacement of our sewer pipe to the main. I sure hope we do not have to revisit that issue.

Watching this video was so helpful. I purchased a closet auger ftom Home Depot. Also clerk suggested I get a gallon of main line opener & toilet unclogger in case there is a blockage the auger can not reach. I hope this works but if not what is the average charge for main line opener. I hace had backup in shiwdet and tub floor.

I just saw this after causing a real bad clog with corn husks, was taking 4 hours for each flush to go through and the bowl to empty... Got a $7 auger from wallmart and it worked great after ~5 sessions and 10 minutes spent. Thanks!
