@@2194steve I will definitely join that group. I anted to ask if you wet sand between coats or just layer up the paint thinly and wet sand the final layer before the clear coat and then sand again?
@2194steve2 жыл бұрын
@@jasonlee3577 preparation is key, first put on 3 thin coats of primer, softly flatten with 800 W&D then put 3 coats of undercoat flatten as before between coats. Then when nice and cured say 2 days then start putting on the top coat,the first one or two will look crap! I put on about 7 top coats I used craftmaster paint Also on the last couple of coats add PDA additive helps paint flow. Just remember to heat the paint in hot water with every coat you put on, Don’t use a naked flame as it’s very flammable 🧨 Hope this helps regards Steve

Very nice finish, the nice thing here is you can get the dirt out then just brush over it unlike when I'm spraying clear you have to de-nib after. They used to do this years back using black coach enamel the finish was like glass 👍

They do this all the time when giving a fiberglass boat a new LP paint job. They brush it on and it comes out with a mirror finish. You just have to know how to tip the brush. I think I am going to do this on my truck’s old fiberglass shell. The clear-coat is totally gone but the gel coat color is still good. This method does not waste as much paint at spraying would and no heavy masking is involved.

@@2194steve Appreciate the reply Steve. Yes painting with cellulose by brush not too easy or recommended but as a 17 year old it was good enough (from memory) My son left me with his old Mazda MX5 when he went to live in USA, It is solid and mechanically v good and he couldn't bring himself to sell it so I took it on. I just need to work on 2 panels. Whatever I achieve will be better than how they look. It is strange how black deteriorates-I have a 2003 Mercedez SLK that also suffers on a few panels, though mostly it is as new. I will most probably buy the black for the Mazda from the company that you mention. Do I sand down to bare metal or just until smooth? Do I use their primer also? I appreciate your response especially on a Saturday morning! (PS Like the mini...we had one in the late 80's....worth a bomb now!)

Hi Steve, I like your videos and 'ethos' of painting your own car. I have done the same with my kit car, using Tekaloid enamel. I had to do most of it outside (no breeze, and overcast) . The second day's work gave me some brush marks, and it was apparent that the paint wasn't flowing as it had done the previous day..... why? It was about 4 degrees hotter on the first day! Your tip to warm the paint is a real 'top tip' which I shall be using. The paint had had since last July to harden, so I may flat it with wet and dry, and try some of the clear varnish - I used some similar (a product for artists) over a transfer on a bike, and it was perfect (despite folk who say brushing is no good... Grr). Anyway, a question..... You say in the video you used a scourer - have you tried wet and dry? Is there any evidence of marks from the scourer that show through the clearcoat (depending on sun direction or whatever)? It seems that Craftmaster have their 'own brand' clearcoat - do you know if it's the same as you used, as that doesn't appear in their product list?
@2194steve2 жыл бұрын
Hi martin, all the so called armchair experts say painting with a brush is no good because most of them don’t even know which end of the brush to use🤷♂️ Yes the warming of the paint in slow cooker works a treat, I did use wet and dry a lot 600 800 1000 and even 2000 but as you said I used a scoura

@@rashb3994 I’ve haven’t seen many do it this way, that’s awesome to hear it’s working. Thank You . I always thought you had to paint cars with a spray gun before watching your video . I'm guessing cars are painted with a spray gun now to save on money and for self leveling possibly ?
@2194steve3 жыл бұрын
@@MrDnkcat I don’t think personally you get the same depth of shine from a spray gun! If you look at say a 1920s 1930s Bugatti you will see what I mean, well if it was good enough for RR up till the 1980s it’s good enough for me.

He doesn’t know how to lay off paint,he left what us professional painters call fish tails when trying to lay it off by putting the brush into the wet varnish and brushing downwards instead of brushing from the bottom upwards.

@@2194steve I shall have to do this with my 2004 Saab 9-5 which has sat looking rather sad since I stopped using it in favour of my 2011 9-5. Have you any experience in stripping paint from parts? Does the paint go on modern metal the same as old? I assume production techniques improved as time went on so paint would adhere better, but I assume the primer is the most important factor?
