Here I am painting the drivers door of my classic mini,I’m using coach enamel paint, just like the craftsmen did in the 1900s to 1970s it’s a dying art form, I decided to paint my car this way because I was quoted £4000-£8000 for re spray, and this way cost me only £350 yes that’s right £350 inc sundries!

Bit late finding the video but very interesting. As an enthusiastic amatuer, I coach painted several cars about 40 odd years ago. Used ICI coaching enamel, no thinning. Warmed the paint tin up on a hot radiator, prepared as you did but didn't use a tipping brush. Worked in a very warm garage, careful but swift brushing gave a brilliant finish - brush marks melted away into a high gloss as I worked. Did a Mini, mk1 Escort and an E493A Prefect. Currently thinking about coach painting my Morris Minor.

Your work is truly excellent - so this is only a thought, not in any way a criticism, just a tip that might help others - I was taught in the RAF (many many years ago!!) to coach paint exactly as you're doing it (albeit with paints of the time such as Tekaloid and Mason's and no additives like PPA - we had to work fast!!! ) but with one difference - we were educated to wherever possible not put the tipping brush directly into wet paint; instead start at the wet edge, run it into and lift off in wet paint. It prevents potential "start marks" as they were called, where no matter how gently you put the tipping brush onto the wet surface, the paint couldn't flow out enough to eradicate where it had "started". Anyway enough of the old times! Excellent work.

First of all, this finish is spectacular. Whatever works, works. Stick with it and finesse it all you can. But Mr. Wingham, to your point, a great painter told me: "Always paint into the wet, an' you'll ne'er have a holiday." Meaning you'll always have work and your jobs will look great, because you'll never miss a spot. You can sometimes avoid changing directions at all. In the same set-up as depicted, I would start by the handle, and paint towards it, from farther away to closer. Lifting the brush out of the wet part, as you describe, and starting near the edge of the unpainted side of the work.

Exactly Jean Paul, That was my main reason for painting it with a brush in the first place,it only cost me £350 to paint inside and out, I was quoted £4000-£8000 depending on the finish I wanted. So I thought I could hand paint it myself, I read up on it how the old timers did it in the 1900s and went from there! And to be very honest with you, it’s very hard to tell it’s not sprayed.

I'm a coach painter. I started at 15 in 1973. I've been doing it for 47 years now. Sorry to say that you painted that door wrong. The panel should have been painted in one go. No joins and the brush strokes should have been Vertical to the floor. So window to the bottom of the door. The term laying off is used in the trade. Put more paint on than you need and take it off again. Fill the panel. The wipe the brush. Brush vertical through it. Wipe the brush after every stroke. Then sideways. Then finish top to bottom lightly as to minimise 'tram lines'. The lines from the brush.

Got some paint brushes today for urethane paint because was gonna use it on painting truck I see Harbor Freight also has paint brushes for painting Arcylic Enamel too. I started painting front of my truck with a spray gun but after painted the hood used a roller a little bit but didn't like the result a paint brush will be to get all the paint on the vehicle without getting overspray in other spots if I like using this method I won't go back to using a spray gun. I just bought a foam hookup for a garden hose today. Want to get rid of the pressure washer got at home now used it some but really don't need it to wash a car all need is water pressure washer is just more pressure and it can get deep dirt stains off better. Very nice work. I wasnt aware painting with a brush was really a thing. My cars paint is so bad and the panels are plastic. I was going to use a foam roller, but other than the hood, there isnt enough space to justify using one so I started using a brush today with matte black rustoleum 15% mineral spirits . So far, its looking ok, I figure its going to be a bit textured when done after 5-6 very very light coats(the panels flex so I think it will crack). If it seems durable, I will sand it smooth later and maybe add a satin clear coat, but honestly no matter what it will be an improvement from how it was looking lol.

Alright. Painted my van using finest brush and alkyd oil based paint of Tikkurilla brand ,It is enamel type of paint as far as i am concerned as well as in your video. Mixed it with about 20% white spirit , did not warm paint up and applied thick coat of it . Turned out grate, i have tipped with my only brush i used for painting van. Dark blue colour so some strokes are visible , but overall looking great with good reflection, better than from sponge roller. I have tested with sponge roller on my test hood at home before hand and brush gave 2 times more.clarity in reflection, so thank you for promoting brushing and not rolling. P.s. paint I used seems to better level when applied thick layer or pretty thick consistency 5.5 hours whole car. Quastion. Enamel oil based paint , alkyd paint not supposed to be clearcoated . Car paint shop adviced so as well as other car painter and google. Paint will crack or clear coat peel off within not very long time. Is your car still alright in this regards ? How long since clearcoated ?

Hi Christopher, only reason I painted mine flat is because the restoration company took them off! If you take your time, and make sure you keep a wet edge at all times till the end of a panel you should be ok, warm up the paint in a hot water saucepan this helps the paint flow better. Do a panel when your happy with the finish, only then move to the next, otherwise you will create a lot of work for yourself removing and starting again!🤷‍♂️ Don’t cut corners on the preparation, I put on 3 coats primer,3 coats of undercoat 4 coats of topcoats and then 2 coats of clear coat all brush on! HI Steve, Thank you for your informative videos, they are clear and easy to follow. I am looking at doing this to my Mini as soon as possible and am ordering the materials over the weekend. I’m looking to paint the car red including roof. Apologies in advance for the lengthy comment and if you have already answered some of my queries in previous videos and comments. I’d really appreciate if you could check through the below and confirm all looks OK, before I buy materials and commit to the job. ALL MATERIALS I THINK I NEED: Craftmaster’s Enamel Primer, Craftmaster’s High Build Undercoat, Craftmaster's Enamel Paint (Colour Coat), HMG's Coma Berenice Clear, Craftmasters PPA thinners, 3’’ Purdy Brush, Tipping Brush, 3’’ Harris Brush , Purdy Rollers, general brush for primer and undercoat, something to heat the colour paint with, tac cloths, general rags, 800 grit wet and dry, 1200 grit wet and dry, 1500 grit wet and dry, white spirit PROCESS ORDER: - Rub down car - Craftmaster’s Enamel Primer (no thinners) x3 coats - Craftmaster’s High Build Undercoat (no thinners) x3 coats - Wet sand all painted areas with 1200 - Craftmaster Enamel Paint with 10% thinners x6 coats (wet sanding between coats with 1200 & 2000) - HMG Coma Berenice Clear x3 coats (wet sanding in-between coats with 1200 & 2000) A FEW QUESTIONS: 1. Craftmaster do a Clear Varnish. Is there any reason why you chose to use HMG’s Coma Berenice over the Craftmaster’s Clear Varnish product? 2. How long do I need to wait between coats for the Primer/Undercoat/Colour Coat/Clear Coat to dry? 3. How many litres of Primer/Undercoat/Colour Coat/Clear Coat will I need to paint a Mini in one colour for each stage taking the amount of coats into consideration? 4. For the top coat (colour coat), do you measure out your paint/thinners with measuring jugs for consistency or do you just free pour the thinners into the paint and guess the 90% / 10% ratio? 5. How long should I wait for the colour coat to dry before adding a clear coat? 6 . How long did the process take you for the whole car? Thanks again!

A £4000 quote is ludicrous, but there are affordable alternatives to hand painting. I've painted a Fiat 128 using an electric spraygun that cost peanuts. The trick is to thin the paint progressively with each coat so as to reduce the size of the paint particles left on the surface, effectively filling the gaps left by the sputter caused by such crude equipment. Rubbing back well with buffing compound leaves a professional finish. I sold that car to a collector for AU$3000 in 2004 when you could buy them for AU$500

If sprayed countless cars over 40 years, but where I live now there’s no option of spraying so I had to come up with a alternative solution, and coach painting is it! Anyone anywhere regardless of money can achieve fabulous results, and very cheap. Also a advantage of this method is if you say scrap a wing, it cost less than £20 to repair, rather than £500 plus a garage would charge. Thank you for your comments it’s much appreciated.
