I’m a vet tech and I trim my cockatiel’s wings and our two ringneck’s wings. They grow back in about a month or so and it is a painless procedure as simple as a haircut. They can still fly, just not high enough to get stuck somewhere. The procedure is also great for training and hand taming, and my cockatiel likes to stay on my hand now even when her wings aren’t clipped. Ha... Guess I have to teach some idiots here a lesson in the comment section. 1. A clipped parrot can still fly enough without going too far. 2. It doesn't hurt if a parrot is being clipped carefully. (It's like clipping your toe nails) 3. The reason for them being clipped is mostly for so that they can explore freely, in more open spaces (like your house) than being in a bird cage isolated for a long time. (Ironic) 4. It's a technique used too for new pet birds getting comfortable with their environment outside the cage, without panicky flying around, possibly hitting a transparent object and stressfully hurting or killing itself at the process. 5. To put it simple, clipping a bird is like a parent being strict to their child, by giving the child limits, or else the child might do something that'll be painful or worse. If you think a parent who wants to protect their child is cruel, then I pity your parents for having you :p Anyway, I hope this comment is always on top so that some concerned people be advised, I know not all everyone agrees with this kind of thing, but if you know what you're doing, then do it as long as they can still explore freely. (I recommend going to a vet to clip a parrot's wing if you're a beginner) 6. It's not bad if the bird is still comfortable and happy.

You have put up a good argument and I can see that in some striations clipping flight feathers may be the best option. I have a rescue parrot that once had its wing broken and when I got it it couldn't fly. It will never be able to. He is as happy as the other parrots he lives with. We have lots of ladders for him to get from the floor to the cages. He struggles to mate but apart from that happy. So clipping wings doesn't mean sad birds. :0)

Why do you clip a birds wings? Its animal abuse. They fly in nature miles every day. Flying is their natural instinct, they are birds. And you don’t know if it hurts them mentally. How would you feel if a bigger creature takes away your possibility to run? You guys are disgusting. If you can’t handle a bird, don’t buy a bird. I have seven cockatiels and none of them is clipped (here in Germany it is considered animal abuse). They fly and they are tame. They come on my finger and they fly on my shoulders if they want to. They are not getting forced to do it with taking away their flying instinct. To me that is pathetic. And besides that, you said you do it because you are being strict like being strict with a child? Lol would you make your child paraplegic to protect it from harm? omg that is so dumb unbelievable! Keep your house safe and train your birds. If you can’t do that, buy a dog or a hamster instead. But stop abusing birds just because your ego is happy.

Except for some rare and for the most part temporary medical conditions, the simply is no justifyable reason to clip a birds wings. While it’s true that the procedure isn’t physically painful, it is still a most unpleasant experience for them - imagine someone you love inexplicably and forcibly rendering you a paraplegic, simply because you chew the tops of doors, or poo on their best sofa, or because they don’t think your liberty is worth the effort of being vigilant about open doors and windows? And it’s not the actual procedure so much as it’s effects that are catastrophic for companion birds. These beautiful but still very much wild creatures already sacrifice SO MUCH in order to live with us humans, it is height of selfish disregard for them to think, “this flying business is a bit inconvenient, let’s get rid of it”. Flying is why birds stopped being dinosaurs, it’s what birds do. Yes they can get from A to B by walking, just as we could, theoretically at least, crawl everywhere we needed to go - as in it would be tedious, painful and hugely frustrating but we could still get around? Well no, not really, so what gives me the right to transform my beautiful boy, who in the wild would have routinely covered >200 km on the wing everyday, into a cripple who can only awkwardly and nervously struggle to limp a few meters. And most parrots rarely walk on the ground. The like to be as high up as possible. This is because as prey animals the ground is not safe. So while a clipped bird might seem content when they’re in your company, all those hours when you’re at work or somewhere else, the bird is an anxious, stressed out and hyper vigilant mess, because he doesn’t know when that dog or that eagle is coming back, but when it does he knows HE HAS NO MEANS OF ESCAPING IT, how utterly terrifying that must be, it’s no wonder so many of these mutilated birds are also feather pluckers, biters or have other behaviour problems (what a misnomer, it’s the owners with the behaviour problem, the bird’s “behaviours” are more accurately described as being symptomatic of trauma and abuse). And then there’s all the physical problems wing clipping causes. For the most part a bird’s wing serve no other function but flying, otherwise they’re just extra food for predators. Their entire being assumes flight will be happening and functions accordingly, ie their muscular, digestive, skeletal, neurological , and I can’t remember what other systems are all calibrated towards regular flight, remove this and things go pear shape, for example obese , unhealthy birds (It takes a lot of energy to fly)...Wing clipping, IMO, shouldn’t be framed in terms of “people’s choice”, rather animal abuse stemming from a lack of knowledge and /or a lack of consideration. It needs to go the way of tail docking and ear shaping in dogs and be outlawed, and for those who still insist on this barbaric practice should at the very least refrain from hacking off their birds carefully preened feather with a pair of scissors and HAVE IT DOME BY A QUALIFIED AVIAN VET.

Let me explain, friends. The little bird is not being hurt. The wings are clipped so she cannot fly very far. Her feathers will grow back. (Thats what the blood feathers are, the feathers growing back) 1. The little bird is not wild. She is used to being held and is not scared or being hurt. 2. Her wings being clipped prevents her from flying into windows or walls. Or getting lost and captured by cats or other animals. 3. She can still fly! Just not very far.. She can glide to the ground. She will not fall. (Glide means she spreads her wings and slowly moves to the ground, like a slow airplane.) When I was young I did not know the bird wasn't hurt when feathers got clipped. I never clipped them. My bird crashed into a wall almost every time she left the cage. She broke her wing. If I had been old enough to realize this, my bird would've had her wings clipped. She probably would have lived much longer than two years.

A little late but let me explain some stuff. 1. Clipping is necessary for domesticated birds, they'll fly into the wall or a window and injure themselves if they aren't clipped. Unless, of course you keep them in a cage 24/7. ( if you do, you shouldn't have a bird, they need to fly. ) 2. They can still fly with their wings clipped, just not as far, they glide to the ground or their perch. 3. It's not painful, it's pretty much like cutting hair, the bird doesn't feel the wings being clipped. If the bird starts acting like it's in pain, squawking, etc it's either A: It's scared ( birds may be scared the first time their wings are clipped since it's a new experience. ). Or, B: You've cut too much and hurt the bird, if that happens please get them to a vet as quick as you can to assess what happened and how severe it is. Clipping a birds wings doesn’t hurt them, it’s only a few feathers and it’ll grow back! The reason why this is helpful is when you first get a budgie. If the budgie can fly and it doesn’t trust you yet, it can fly into a wall or a mirror, and can get severely injured. Clipping a birds wings doesn’t hurt them at all and they’ll grow back. So if you are worried that they won’t be able to fly again, they’ll fly again once the feathers grow back. The reason for clipping a budgies wing is just for their safety. If you do get one you should consider getting one clipped or not clipped, but it’s ultimately your choice. (Make sure to get it done by a professional or be really careful though) Let me repeat this one more time, Clipping a birds wings is for the birds safety and they don’t get hurt and the feathers will grow back and they can fly.

Though I personally do not agree with clipping wings at all the comments in this video are stupid and arrogant. Clipping is used for when birds flying in a house is problematic. If a bird doesn’t know when a window is in front of them they could get a concussion and die. If birds don’t know where something dangerous is they could die. Depending on the house you live in it may or may not be necessary. All of my birds can fly as they are trained where windows are but not all birds know what to do. It is not abuse to clip a birds feathers unless it is unnecessary. It does not hurt them if you are doing it properly like she is in this video. If it’s done wrong that will hurt them. She have never been outside the cage until i brought her home. I remember the time when she left the cage for the first time. She was totally inched after few circles around the room, she could not coordinate her flight, many times she badly landed on the floor, didn´t know what to do... Today she is like an acrobat. Most people that clip do not have a genuine reason for clipping. There are rarely cases that clipping should be utilized, yours being one of them. Clipping still has many health consequences, and for a fully able bird, it can be the cause of severe muscle atrophy, fatty liver disease, and many other health problems. Her lovebirds don’t have any severe issue that would make sense for them to be clipped. Clipping is definitely an abusive practice that needs to stop, however that are RARE cases that it can be utilized. Her video, along with many other comments saying their birds can “bump into windows” and are “easier to tame” are the ones the comments are targeted towards. Since those people have no real reason for clipping that couldn’t be solved with proper training in a flighted bird. Please don’t take them to heart since your bird is blind.

@@chris_j3417 i already replied to someone else saying this, my bird literally smashes into every wall and damaged it's tail, i would rather trim it so it can live to see another day that to let it die however cruel it may seem, i don't care if my excuse is as bad as "bump into windows", i don't want my parrot to die or severely injure more parts of it's body, i've already trained a parrot WHILE giving it flight because it knew how to fly without crashing into things, i bought a female for the male one i trained (the one which i did not trim the wings for), and the female could not stop damaging itself, the male one did take time to train and after bumping into a few things it learnt quickly and avoided it, but the female bird did no such thing, i definitely won't trim the female one's wing again as there is no reason to trim it after i've trained it, and i barely cut the feathers, i only went about 4 feathers on each side although the recommended amount is around 6 for birds like cockatiels, i hope you understand this and that i don't want to hurt my bird more than it hurts itself

im a licensed vet, and i can just say clipping is not like cutting off someones legs. firstly, legs dont grow back. secondly, amputation and clipping both are a solution to health problems. thirdly, birds are only seriously harmed when the vet is inexperienced and cuts too far along the feathers. this does not hurt the birds, and can help with the birds flying into walls (which can also cause shock) or being trained. think about this. a bird flies into a wall and is going through severe shock plus the fact it hurt. still think it should fly freely ? a birds wings get clipped, it can still fly, and it doesn’t hurt, if done properly and it no longer gets hurt. clipping isn’t wrong but neither is not clipping. plus the fact if you clip feathers you can also remove blood feathers. blood feathers are hollow so blood travels easily through it and if not properly cared for the bird can bleed to death.

PippyPets you’re welcome :) people are just seeing this as “iTs AgaInsT NaTuRe.” but they don’t understand how dangerous a bird can be to themselves. getting stuck on top of things, flying into walls, hitting a ceiling fan, etc etc. both you and I knew when this is done correctly (and with permission), no trauma or disturbances are caused and it does more good than bad + they can still fly. people should really do their research before arguing with someone that actually has this experience and knowledge. i’m not even talking about myself it can be any budgie owner, but people who have never even owned a bird let alone a budgie are taking it upon themselves to tell you how to care for them , or even calling you terrible names which is not okay. These people are ignorant sis. just ignore them. 💕 best regards
@valerielopez79575 жыл бұрын
The Greatest Of All Time that probably comes from the idea that it can be a stressful situation. for example, the bird can become nervous around you if you yourself do it so its usually best to let a vet do it so the foundation of friendship stays there. i’ve heard of owners who tried to clip the wings, and cut a blood feather which could most definitely shorten a life span since budgies don’t have much blood to lose and this could make them lose a lot of blood. I mostly have people come in saying that they were going to, but decided against it since they weren’t qualified. 3 factors that can potentially make the birds lifespan shorter (that can be avoided) are 1. The bird loses trust and becomes nervous around you for clipping its wings (yourself not the vet) and it becomes stressed. 2. You cut a blood feather and the bird bleeds out. 3. You cut above a covert, the bird can NOT fly this causes stress/a predator has easy access to them (i.e a cat or dog) All of these can be avoided by taking your budgie or macaw to a qualified avian vet. They should still be able to fly, but not to the point where they endanger themselves. this can also be avoided by doing flight training. they can also have a shorter lifespan if they’re flying and for example, fly into a wall and fall into a boiling pot of water. Whatever someone does is just personal preference but it bugs me when they force their ideas on others even after not being educated.

Just going to say this because i was just reading through the comments and people are lowkey just stupid. Cutting a birds wings is unnatural yes. But so's keeping a bird inside and feeding it freshly cut fruit and vegetables and warming up their food and taking them to a vet. People clip their birds wings for the birds safety especially parrots and babies are at risk of killing themself or breaking their beak there is no way to make your house "bird safe" because they can literally fly into a wall the only way to keep a bird safe inside is to clip their wings or train them. You cant train a bird youve only had for a few weeks and its extremely dangerous for baby birds to fly if they are new to the environment. Just be thankful this lady is teaching you the proper way to clip the wings unlike how ive seen people trim them before where its caused infection, further feather plucking and overall discomfort to the bird. The point of having a pet is to keep it safe and give it the longest happiest life possible which means protecting it from injury and providing it a safe and healthy environment

Clipping does not always prevent birds from flying. If lightly clipped, a bird can often still fly, or glide around. They just wont be able to get up the velocity to do light-speed laps around the room. This is great for keeping the bird safe, as flying into walls, windows, etc. can really hurt them. You'd think every bird would naturally be an A+ flyer, but this just isn't the case. Some of them really, really suck at flying, in this case clipping is doing the bird a help, as flying into things can break beaks, feathers, little legs, and worse. Clipping can also be used for behavioral purposes. I can't really speak too much on this, as each situation (and bird!) is different. A clipped bird can be less aggressive. While a flying bird might be a happy bird, the happiest bird is one that gets lots of out-of-cage time, and socialization! Preventing aggressive behaviour, and reducing the risk that the bird might injure themselves while flying, can mean a lot more attention and out-of-cage time, and this is arguably the most important thing for the birds health. As long as bird has a place they can go to feel safe, and an owner who understands, and is considerate of their body language/needs, the little one will be perfectly happy, flighted or not. Sometimes all the training in the world just can't curb the aggression (commonly related to hormones, the bird having been mishandled in the past, or the bird just plain being a grump), and as a last resort, clipping can sometimes address this. Clipping is temporary! When the bird begins a moult (it varies between species, but most commonly happens 1-2 times a year) it will regrow the snipped flight feathers. Some people choose to clip their birds during hormonal periods (puberty, mating season), and let the feathers regrow once that time has passed. It also doesn't hurt the bird, thank goodness! This is coming from someone who will do everything possible to keep their bird fully flighted, but understands that for some birds, clipping is a harmless, non-permanent way to keep them safe and happy.

How would you like it if a bird chopped for your feet and caused you to not move around as much? You can teach free flight and/or get a bird flying cable or you can net your backyard and put screens on your windows. How exactly do you know that they are happy. God made birds a flying creature and there are so many animals that don't fly so instead of taking away a unique animal's ability to fly get a ground dwelling animal and not a bird...stop acting like you know exactly what a birds feelings are. You are such a conversationalist.
@schrodingercat76085 жыл бұрын
@@tierneyellis1308 Couple of crucial differences there. 1: Feet don't grow back, flight feathers do 2. Cutting off feet causes physical pain, clipping wings causes no pain. I don't think you read my comment, I clearly stated that I keep my bird fully flighted, but wanted to address this notion that clipping is somehow the worst thing in the world for a bird. Free flight outside can be very dangerous, if the bird flies away (and yes, even the most well-trained, strongly-bonded bird can get spooked and fly away) it's not likely to survive, due to predators, weather conditions, inadequate food supply, etc. But a screened in porch, or a flying cable are wonderful options for those who have them! You didn't really address the safety issue, so I'll assume debating this is a moot point. Also, conversationalist is a compliment, so uh, thank you?
@tierneyellis13085 жыл бұрын
@@schrodingercat7608 Conventionalism is the philosophical attitude that fundamental principles of a certain kind are grounded on (explicit or implicit) agreements in society, rather than on external reality. So it isn't necessarily a compliment depending on the context I'm using and The safety part you should always fly your bird in a safe place to fly and you should teach recall training. And my point of cutting off your feet analogy was that it disables them for a while and maybe it does hurt the because we don't know that it does or doesn't hurt them. I honestly think that it is wrong and you shouldn't leave your bird by itself at home, let it round the house near open windows or fans that are turned on, or leave it in a cage which will cause the bird to have anxiety and will want to fly away and never come back. Also you can put a piece of paper on windows and mirrors and the bird will know not to fly into it they are intelligent. Ever wonder what the bird cutouts on windows of buildings are for? It's so the birds don't smash into the windows and die...
@schrodingercat76085 жыл бұрын
@@tierneyellis1308 In your first reply, you had said "conversationalist", not conventionalist, but I understand what you were trying to say now. My original comment was to dispel some of the misinformation around clipping (for example: we do know that it doesn't hurt them, as fully grown feathers have no nerves, and no blood supply. Blood feathers do, and of course these should never be clipped!). I really don't think I'm the person you need to be having this discussion with, I know all about windows and mirrors, and my own (unclipped, flying) bird is safe regarding both of them. Let's just agree to disagree.You believe clipping is 100% wrong, I believe it is sometimes helpful as a last resort.

This is for safety reasons. If these birds got loose in the wild they would likely not survive. They could get lost. I lost my parrot that way. I understand wanting your bird to have freedom to fly, but for most cases clipping flight feathers is the best way to make sure your bird will be safe. They can still have a great quality of life and be safe. You can take them outside with a harness and know they are safe. Yes in the wild in their natural habitat birds should obviously have flight but these are pets and live in human environments with dangers everywhere

Alright there's a lot of hate on this video so as a person that has owned birds for years I'm gonna clear things up. First of all, people have pet birds. It's a thing if you weren't aware. If you are saying it's cruel and you don't own a bird it's best not to say anything. I have 3 birds atm and I'm currently taming 2 of them. They are lovebirds and are very fast flyers. They're also not very good at flying considering they're rescues and haven't done it much. So I do clip their wings for their safety. Now I also have a pineapple conure that I do not clip because he is trained. Some people need to clip their birds wings for various reasons, training, clipping them because of flying issues, ect. ect. So please do not call this person abusive or cruel because you may not know the situation or what you're talking about. I think this video was very well put together and educational. Thank you.

Libby Cain Wing clipping is scientifically proven to be mentally and physically damaging for birds. Clipping leads to learned helplessness, obesity, cardiovascular disease, mutilation, pododermatitis (bumble foot), OCD, muscle atrophy, aterosclerosis, and much more, as well as clipped birds being more susceptible to predation. Birds should NEVER be clipped for bonding or training purposes, and in pretty much all cases will make the bird much more terrified of people and cause it to loose self confidence. I have successfully tamed many fully flighted birds with no problems. I believe it is better to let the bird gain enough confidence to let them do it themselves, then clipping and essentially forcing them through the taming process.

People need to know it’s like cutting hair to a certain point, you shouldn’t cut more then what she showed you. It doesn’t hurt the bird at all and for me it guarantees that if my bird gets outside he can’t fly very far. He would not last more then a few days on his own as I’m sure other birds would attack him. Inside the house it stops him from reaching certain heights but he can still fly. This is not cruel it’s a preference and a precaution owners take as their bird is domesticated and a family member. We have brown eagles that live near me in Australia and I’m sure my bird would be easy food if he got out.

Gerda B this is false. If you train your bird it won't fly into Windows. I agree that maybe at first you have to clip them to be able to tame them but once they grow back you shouldn't clip them again. And even then, having them clipped while they're not 100% trusting of you makes them feel trapped. A part of taming and gaining trust is allowing the bird to leave or get away from you when they don't feel safe. That way they know you're not trying to hurt them. This obviously shouldn't be done out of the cage at first if they're flighted but they should be able to fly around their cage and gain some distance from you if they feel threatened by you.

And the feathers grow back. It only makes it so that they can't fly as fast or as high. Clipping doesn’t only affect the muscles, it can also affect the birds mental health in bad ways such as developing a phobia of flying even if the wings are not clipped all the time. I only recommend clipping if your bird is ill ( blind, heart disease etc). Clipping can also make your bird lose their trust in you which will result in aggressive behaviors if upset. In my opinion, clipping a birds wings is the equivalent of a human with chopped off arms and legs. Once again, this is not to send hate and just to inform you of other problems. I sincerely apologize if you got offended or upset.

@@boisvertblues literally all of the anti clipper have good points but just havent explained them. Birds need flight as a way of exercise but also entertainment, which could cause a bird to become overweight . Clipping the wings is also very dangerous aswell. You're taking away their natural movement and they're not going to realise it. The bird is still going to try and fly, which could cause injury if they fall from a high place, which is very likely. Bird aren't domesticated animals so they still have their natural instincts. If panicked or in shock they cant fly away to safest, causing anxiety which could really harm your bird. All the pro clippers just use the excuse "well I dont want my bird to fly away".
@boisvertblues4 жыл бұрын
Buzzy Wuzzy if your birds wings are clipped correctly they will flutter to the ground and not drop like a rock and hurt themselves. Besides if a bird doesn’t have their wings clipped they probably won’t be used to being indoors and can fly into mirrors seriously injuring themselves. Also if your bird doesn’t have their wings clipped they can be harder to train and if you don’t train them they get anxiety issues that can cause unhappiness in your bird. Overall I would advise having a vet clip your birds wings, then train them and let the wings grow back
@buzzywuzzy52564 жыл бұрын
@@boisvertblues I dont describe this as "drop like a rock". The bird will still fall if its clipped professionally. It wont just go, "oh, my wings have been clipped by a vet, I have to jump down really carefully!" That's not how it works. It's going to try and jump, realise it cant fly like before, and then fall in panic. I've seen loads of birds like this who just dont realise they cant fly even after weeks of having their wings clipped. A lot of your points are for your person benefit. Having a bird not trained wont cause any anxiety at all. As long as you're interacting with it, then it will be fine. If youre talking about hand taming, then just get an already tamed bird. It's really mean to take away a birds flight just so it's easier for you to tame them. You've got to realise that they aren't domesticated, meaning they take up so much time when taming. Plus it is genuinely just better if you rehome a bird other than buy one from a shop or breeder. What will cause anxiety is clipping a birds wings. I mean, you're taking away it's natural movement that it uses when panicked. By the way you're talking, it seems like you're going to clip a new birds wings and then hand tame them. This is such a terrifying process for the bird and with no way to escape, it's going to get so much anxiety when you interact with it. Same with just having a bird roam. Sudden movements or sounds can startle a bird and they're going to feel in danger knowing they dont have a method to escape and as you said, this is going to lead to unhappiness. Once again, they're not domesticated. They get panicked easily, and they get paniced a lot. If you feel like there things around your room that are dangerous, like mirror or windows then that's your responsibility to fix it. You shouldnt make a bird suffer just because you wanted one and you dont want to bird proof your room. Theres loads of things you can do to stop birds from flying into things like that. If you really dont want to change your room, then just dont get a bird. It's that simple. Some homes are just not appropriate for a bird and it's horrible that people decide to take away it's natural movement just because they want one. Just because clipping might work for you personally doesnt mean it's ok for all birds. Birds still suffer and get injured from clipping when done correctly. You dont know how a bird feels. For all you know, your bird could be feeling really stressed and anxious from not being able to fly.
@__mastershifureads__4 жыл бұрын
Not at all. "pro clippers" as you said are the people who's birds have flown away or died because they didn't train the bird properly. The only argument I see so far is "it's safe for the birds" which isn't true in the slightest. Most people commenting things like that and are saying it hurts them or "they can't fly" probably don't have birds and are just appealing to their good natures. I have 5. A cockatiel, a budgie. Two parrotlets and a macaw. Clipping their wings is the easy way out. I won't keep typing the same thing out though. Do yourself a favor and search up free flying and harness training. Some good channels are birdtricks, Marlene mccohene and elleandthebirds. You could learn something.

i get all the responses that say this isn’t fair to the birds. i feel you, i really do. we don’t like to keep our birds in cages, they’re allowed free reign of the house. but there are some cases where this is necessary. right now, we have two rescue parrots that cannot stand eachother despite living together for years. one keeps to herself, but the other is aggressive and constantly flies right up to the other to attack her. until we can find a safer arrangement for them, the aggressive bird’s wings have to be clipped so they don’t hurt eachother. they are both otherwise happy and mischievous. there is no plucking, they play and explore and their behavior hasn’t changed. even when their wings aren’t clipped, our parrots prefer to walk/climb, i guess it’s because flying takes up more energy. It doesn’t hurt, feathers are like our fingernails and grow back after some time. as long as you take care of your birds and keep their minds busy, they won’t really care and find other ways to travel

**The importance of flying** Wild parrots fly up to hundreds of kilometres a day in search of food, and it is crucial for their physical and psychological wellbeing to fly. Their entire bodies are built and designed for flight- from their hollow bones to highly efficient respiratory systems, and fast metabolism (this is why they poop every 15-20 minutes). They have a higher body temperature than humans (42-43 degrees Celsius) and a much faster heartrate. In flight, a bird’s heartrate can reach 1000 beats per minute, and for a bird to remain healthy they need regular vigorous exercise, which they only achieve by flying! A rough estimate that a migrating songbird uses 22 times as much energy to fly as a human does to run the same distance. Flight is an extremely high calorie burning activity, and any other exercise simply doesn’t compare. Studies on budgies have shown that daily flighted exercise is important for the proper function of a bird’s defences against oxidative stress. The budgies who performed daily flighted exercise for 9 weeks had less oxidative stress than the budgies who were mostly sedentary. Budgies who were more active in small cages- walking, climbing, hopping, performing the minimal flight they could- had more oxidative damage than the budgies who were less active (this is because the exercise they were performing was not sufficient for their bodies to respond appropriately). They need to fly outside of the cage for several hours a day, to avoid becoming overweight and the health issues that stem from this. A bird’s entire body and all its functions are designed to rely on their ability to fly! Birds are instinctually programmed to fly when they sense danger- and this is a profound reflex that has been engraved into them for literally millions of years. When a clipped bird senses danger, they will instinctively try to fly but cannot. This creates psychological problems and trauma. Birds love flying, aerial acrobatics, and hanging upside down. Clipping them takes away from this joy and creates an overall sadder bird. Parrots are so clever and need stimulation to avoid boredom, and flying is a very important activity for them that will ensure they live a longer, happier life.

I can understand where your coming from but even if it is for training purposes it is still physiologically harmful to the bird also I would never recommend clipping a birds wings to tame it because there will be more aggression when the bird is upset with you. I would recommend clipping your birds wings if your bird is ill (blind, heart disease etc). Also clipping can make birds lose their trust in you since birds were creatures that were meant to fly. Clipping their wings are like chopping a humans arms and legs off in my point of view. This comment is not to send hate just to inform you of somethings that should be addressed.

If you love your bird do anything to keep him/her safe. I agree that being flighted is the best option but if push comes to shove and your bird is crashing too hard to the point it can severely injure himself/herself, it’s best to clip because he/she most likely can’t come out of their cage safely. And what’s better, a bird in its cage all day for it’s safety or roaming around the house clipped but free to walk around for its safety. Not the best options but I would choose the second option. Bird proofing your home isn’t 100% guaranteed no accidents will happen. My friend’s bird got a concussion in a bird proofed home. Please don’t say it’s cruelty. People people people... clipping a birds wings don’t hurt them. I believe in nit cutting ur birds wings as it can cause problems with strength but I do believe if your bird is in a apartment or a place where it can be dangerous to fly. Especially little birds since they can bump into roofs and walls if scared. So really only cut your birds wings if necessary but it is advised to just let them fly.
@birbnotborb4 жыл бұрын
Thespottedquoll Only clip your bird’s wings for medical purposes. Flying is good exercise, and without it, the bird can get fatty liver disease, which can kill them. Just because the bird can regrow it’s feathers, it won’t necessarily have the strength to do so as the muscles never got the chance to grow.
@twistieman10784 жыл бұрын
@@birbnotborb Well in extreme cases however not for a general common pet scenario. Understand that it takes two, up to about six weeks for smaller birds to completely regenerate flight feathers, depending on length of clip. Study was taken, and assuming the credibility of the sources, 40 days of constant flight restraint was applied to the small birds which the study was being undertaken. The outcome was a considerable appearance of developing muscle atrophy in the birds, comparing the timeline between 40 days and (midpoint from estimate regenerative time for flight feathers) four weeks, 28 days, there would be time for the birds to be back to flying and preventing complete consequence of muscle atrophy. Also take in mind that while the feathers are regenerating, they may be able to use the lengthening feathers to continue to use their muscles, flying shorter distances for example. So there isn't a complete lack of muscle usage during their times of being clipped and by the time they have their feathers clipped next. Diseases and illness are definite consequence of severe restraint and neglect on the pets however unlikely from what the timeline of the study shows. Larger birds however have a harder time from the longer time of flight feather regeneration but in this context with the video that isn't the target case. And its a tad unfair to argument against it from the fact it is the owners choice (its not outlawed so from a legal aspect it isn't cruel or wrong) and there could be any situation where the choice for the clipping to be incurred, but your point for medical purposes is agreeable. Personally I'm happy knowing the birds aren't being hurt from the wings being clipped, that would seriously be call for abusing the small things.

@johnskeeeee7 ай бұрын
Most of the people in this comment section complaining have never actually owned a domesticated parrot or bird. They need to be kept moderately grounded otherwise they’ll hurt themselves flying around and hitting the walls and furniture. Additionally, a unclipped bird can very easily fly out of the house the moment you open a window or door. And if that happens you have maybe a few days tops to find them otherwise they WILL die because very rarely are they capable of surviving on their own.
@ok-yz9fb6 ай бұрын
Or maybe rather than taking away their ability to use their wings, take the precautionary measures to prevent them from flying out in the first place by bird proofing the house from anything dangerous. When you put enough time and effort to take care of your parrot, you can help your bird become good flyers by training their wing muscles, you can definitely avoid clipping their wings. Stop trying to make excuses why clipping is right; only in a few very specific cases is clipping needed. I have 5 parrots and one is 29 years old and at first she was a bad flyer with weak muscles, but with enough training she was able to build her wing muscles and is a well flyer. Don’t get bird if you can’t take care of them.
@johnskeeeee6 ай бұрын
@@ok-yz9fb What precautionary measure is gonna keep the bird from flying into the walls of your house other than removing the entire house thus giving them unlimited ways to fly out? No amount of keeping all your doors & windows shut or clearing the space out is gonna make them any less susceptible to them hurting themselves when they fly into a wall. You can certainly help them fly better & safer but that’s not gonna change the fact that most birds don’t have wings suited for flying in confined spaces. You can’t always train them to do something that is unnatural for them. Unless you have the money to afford a bird friendly enclosure that enables them to fly around aimlessly without harm you aren’t gonna protect them in any way other than clipping their wings. Either that or you keep them in their cage which I personally believe to be more cruel as I’d love to at least give them the freedom to glide around in more open spaces to relieve any stress they may have.
@ok-yz9fb6 ай бұрын
@@johnskeeeee you can definitely train bird to navigate through the walls of a house. If that’s what they’re familiar with, they are not constantly flying into walls. Some of my parrots are not fond of flying, so you know what they do? They don’t fly! Just because they are not great fliers does not mean they are constantly flying into walls - they just choose not to or only fly small distances. I don’t feel a need nor have a never felt a need to cut their wings. I have had parrots for a long time, and I never cut their wings and lo and behold they did completely fine without their wings needing to be cut. While you might see it as a way to prevent themselves from being hurt, it is depressing and just frustrating for parrots when you take away their main form of mobility, let them decide for themselves and be patient when training them to fly, then they will not hit walls constantly.
@johnskeeeee6 ай бұрын
@@ok-yz9fb This sounds like an overgeneralization of birds based on your own experience with birds who individually just happened to have no desire to fly in the first place. Sure, it happens but so does having a bird who wants to fly everywhere & anywhere nonstop and can’t be trained out of it. Just like many dogs can’t be trained out of not running away when outside & off a leash. And while you can certainly train a bird to better navigate around the house that doesn’t eliminate the danger of them flying into a wall if they’re not careful. Especially when they get the zoomies. Just being a human running around in a house is already hazardous but for some reason you think it’s any less hazardous for an animal that can fly over 30mph but with a significantly weaker for dealing with impact to fly around in a house. Train a kid to run safer in a house and tell me that’s even possible.
@ok-yz9fb6 ай бұрын
@@johnskeeeee I understand what you are trying to get at but you yourself over generalize birds stating they need to be “moderately grounded or they’ll hurt themselves”. While this is true for SOME, as I have said in specific cases clipping wings may be necessary, it’s not like birds are flying into walls every chance they get and hurting themselves constantly. While I may be overgeneralizing with my own experience, I cannot speak for others, my many years and training my parrots, I see that birds will not typically go flying into walls every chance they get. In fact, they are more likely to fly into walls if they’re scared of you / something, but when comfortable they will not fly crazily. If you wish to see, there are a plethora of examples online of people with birds who have unclipped wings and living happily with their owners and not flying into walls/ hurting themselves because they are comfortable. Even when they have “zoomies”, they are trained well to not hurt themselves. It is very possible to have a “ungrounded” bird who doesn’t hurt themselves.
