My 9 month old female Rhodesian Ridgeback was very skittish of having her nails trimmed. A groomer we went to (our first) suggested using a muzzle even though there were 3 of us trying to keep her still (she’s 85 lbs). The muzzle seemed to calm her right down as well as protecting us from nips and protecting the dog from trying to sniff too close to the Dremel. Your video has taught me how to trim on my own and we’ve made tons of progress but I still use a muzzle even though my dog is now accustomed to the trimming process. It has an immediate calming effect on her. Hopefully this tip might help someone else who is struggling to keep their dog calm while trimming.

Finally!!!! I have 3 dogs and one with light nails and two with black. And the older two have long quicks that I’m trying to recede. Now I know how to get closer without hurting them! I’ve never quicken them, but it’s because I’m too scared to go shorter! Now I know how far I can go and still be safe. I can’t take them to the groomers because I’ve tried and they said they won’t behave. They will let me do it with help from a family member. Now I can finally do it right and get them where they need to be! You’re AMAZING!!!!!! No one has ever showed the quicks as well as you! Or how to remove the helmet! I didn’t know the quick was more on the bottom and not centered either! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂

I groom my 2 Portuguese Water Dogs but always hated to do the nails because I once hit the quick.. I studied your videos, purchased the Dremmel and the recommended tip and what a difference it makes. After 8 weeks of weekly nail trims, the dogs look great. I was treating daily with the Dremmel when they would offer their paw on command and now they come running when I turn it on. Thank you!

Thank you. I was one of the recent viewers requesting this video. I knew of the circle on the bottom of the black nail. We trim lightly once a week or every 5 days if possible. His nails grow fast and are thick so have been impossible to get them short. Plus I have to bait him with a healthy spoonful of peanut butter smeared inside a bowl to distract him. What has been a game changer is focusing on removing the helmet. I started dremelling the helmet of his nails 2 weeks ago after one of your other videos. Removal of the helmet is taking some time for us to get used to, but definitely gives me hope. I am noticing improvement in the overall shape and length of his nails already. Removing the helmet makes the nails less thick and easier to see and handle. I do believe his quick will recede steadily and we will eventually get his nails to a normal length, maybe even shift trimming to once every other week. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

You have absolutely the best demos for closeups to see what the nail should look like through the process. Most videos have the technique, but not the close ups to show us what it should look like. Many thanks! Now if my Shih Tzu (with black nails) would just sit there nicely for the whole nail trim, it would be great. Currently a work in progress... Tolerates 3 of 4 paws for short dremeling. Many thanks again!!

Very few groomers actually work on nails---or maybe my dogs are so wiggly they can't do it properly, but in any case, I can't seem to get anyone to do it properly, with the consequence that the quick gets longer so they're even more reluctant to trim close & it just gets worse & worse. I wish every groomer would watch this video about 10 times!I guess the only solution is to just keep taking them in for trims every 2 weeks! Thank you for being so clear about the proper way to do this!

I haven't looked up a single dog video in ages, yet this popped up on my feed. I never thought (duh) to look up online how to best grind a dogs nails down, yet my dogs nails are way too long (and damn thick)! Vets always tell me they are too long to cut/grind, they'll be fine (wtf?!?!). I grind them myself, but not often enough and my dog seems to hate it. Watching this video was extremely useful on how best to work "around" the quick to work it down over time. My dog is going to love you!!! I already do :)

Your dog hates it because the claws, not nails, are sensitive, how would you like a power grinder rotating your sensitive parts? They chew at them when long enough, and layers shed off, looking like a hollow claw unless they eat it [keratone source], Just like every wild specxies with claws, they shed layers, and ckaws are used to grip, fight, climb, run, nails are to keep the finger end from being floppy and not being able to grip, quite different. SWtop putting human values and fantasies onto dogsm every dog knows what it is to be a dog a million times better than you do. Learn from dogs, don't assume superiority.

I use the "DREMEL Micro (8050-N/18)" for trimming my Aussie's nails about once every 2 weeks for maintenance. It has a built in light! I use the 4th, out of 5, speeds. BUT... I must make sure that I don't leave the grinder touching/grinding the nail for more than a second, as it can make the nail tip very hot. Touch the tip of the nail right after you've Dremeled it, and that will tell you if you are using the right amount of time against the nail. If nail tip gets too hot, the dog will pull back suddenly (due to pain) and you'll have do some intervention to rebuild trust. Also, a tap-tap-tap technique against the nail rather than prolonged grinding will avoid overheating issues entirely. It might take a tad more time, but all worth it. Short, frequent sessions with copious surprise treats makes your pup come running to you when they see/hear a Dremel :)

What bit or bits? I use a Dremel #408 aluminum oxide 1/2” sanding drum for general and Dremel #932 3/8” finishing stone with a concave tip to round them off. Absolutely agree with your heat/friction technique. I think vibration and friction heat are the main things that adversely effect a dog’s acceptance to trimming.

I had a pair of Miller Forge clippers that look like the ones in this clip. Thought they worked okay…until I bought a pair of Hirota clippers. About 3500¥ here in Japan. This was about $30 when I bought them. They are just so much sharper and are extremely well made. Haven’t used them in a long time because I started using a Dremel. Now I do my dog’s nails about once a week, sometimes more often. I find the best time to do his nails is when he’s taking a nap, just snoozing. I pick up a foot, touch it up a bit, takes only about a minute or less, and walk away. Then I just remember I did that paw and I come back later and do another. Sometimes it’s just 10 minutes later and he still snoozing. Every once in a while I’ll get some treats and lay down and do all four paws. Much easier than trimmers and much less likely to cause bleeding.

I saw your vid a while ago. Best one I've seen that clearly shows what the tip of the quick looks like!!!! One has to see a clear example to know what to look for! Well done! I also bought a pair of the Millers Forge clipper you are using in this vid. They definitely have a higher quality edge that others I've owned. But it's a shame they don't improve the red 'grip'! It slides around and off and really ruins an otherwise great product. I think I'm going to toss them, clean and rough up the handles and try putting on a couple layers of heat shrink tube. Certainly can't be worse than the stock wet noodle grips! LOL!

Hmm on lighter nails I would say it’s… beige? It’s basically a different texture and shade from the surrounding nail. Similar to the black nail situation except it’s light colors instead of dark. Jump to 7:32 for the demo in this vid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioLImIybrM5kiqM

Best video I have seen , I love how you explain the quick. I didn’t know that a Dremel could hurt Them same as clippers. I would like to know brand of Dremel you are using. I have a $40 pair, they don’t seem to grind like those. I won’t try clipping, don’t have the nerve, thanks to you I now know I have to be careful grinding as well. Mine doesn’t work as well as yours. I’m thinking it’s a good thing for my 2 year old Chihuahua, Ollie

Well, I’m not particularly brand-loyal, but my rotary tool is a Dremel MiniMite. The Dremel 7300 PT is equivalent. I also like the HyperTough cordless rotary tool from Walmart. It has a light on the end which can be helpful. I’m planning a video explaining how to choose a dremel but until then those are all good options.

I NEVER CLIPPED HIM, and the nails are short that they don't touch the ground. Every 2 weeks I take my Husky / German shepherd on asphalt parking lot and make him chase the ball 10 times.
@Zerpersande
@Zerpersande 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, I did that with my last golden retriever. My house is on a cul-de-sac and so I would just take him outside and let him ‘do his name’ for a while a few times a week. White marks all over the pavement. But the real reason that I didn’t trim his nails was that he didn’t like it. I didn’t get him until he was six months old and he had food aggression at that time. The only time I tried to trim him he ‘exposed his teeth’. Other than that he was an extremely gentle and friendly dog so I just decided that I would let the groomer do it a couple of times I took him a year and the rest of the time the asphalt would do the trick. But with my new golden I got him at eight weeks and almost immediately started grinding his nails. Now he’s used to it and the best time is when he’s snoozing. If I only do one paw he hardly wakes up.

Wondering if you can keep the bit on the nail for so long when using sandpaper. I’ve always kept the dremel moving quickly b/c it gets hot. I believe you are using diamagroove, and it doesn’t heat like sandpaper.

Yes! The DiamaGroove is an expensive bit specifically for doing dogs’ nails. It’s $150 but it’s the best out there. Sandpaper bits work absolutely fine though! Mine has 2 speeds, and I use high. On a 5 speed dremel I usually end up favoring the 4th speed. There’s not really a wrong answer, it’s just getting the right balance between powerful enough to work but still “quiet” enough for the dog!

Any suggestions on quality nail clippers & Dremel? Looks like I need both. I don't think my clippers are sharp enough to cut & not crush. My groomer does not file the nails this short- so I need to learn how to do this. My last dog had her "quick" grow out bc her nails were always too long. Thx

I am working on a video comparing all the metal bits… for now I’ll say this: I love the DiamaGroove! It is indeed a superior tool. It was worth it for me. But with the right grit, any of the metal bits OR the sandpaper can be equally effective.

@@GoodDogGrooming I have 3 different metal grits that came with a cheap grinder and they wear smooth very quickly. I found your link to an 80 coarse metal grit that you like, but it’s been out of stock for a while. I’ll keep checking. Meanwhile, I’m having trouble with my Cairn Terrier’s black nails. She has 3 dew claws, with a white/pinkish/clear stripe on the sides. I assume that is the quick, but it runs the full length of the nails to the very tip. I don’t see how I can grind or clip them at all without hitting the quick. I have a lot of trouble with dew claws anyway because they are almost a full circle, plus tiny on a small dog. Any ideas or suggestions? I’m learning a lot with your videos.

Thanks for recommending this video I enjoyed it. But I will say Rocky had a lot to say about your video. He could hear the Dremel and the dogs barking in your video and he was not having anything to do with it. Bijou couldn’t have cared less, my guess is because I did her nails earlier tonight so she knew she was safe. In fact I’m charging my Dremel now it almost died before I finished the last nail.

I found your other video so helpful too, I was starting to use the "thumb on thumb" technique today, works like a charm! Weird thing today though, my pup started growling a little when clipping his nails today. He's never done this before, he's 13 months, we usually do nails every 1-2 weeks, so it's not a new thing to him. I was worried because I thought maybe something was hurting his foot or was sticking in between his pads, or maybe a split nail, but he did this for all 4 paws and I couldn't figure out why. He even started mouthing my hand on the last front foot : / Any thoughts as to why (other things to look out for)?

I have a guess that he’s just getting more opinionated now that he’s crossing into adulthood. But it’s hard to say without personally meeting the dog or knowing your situation better. What I would do is actually be firmer about saying “no” or whatever sound you use to mean stop (sometimes with my dogs, we say “ah-ah” to mean no) when you hear the growl. Always calm and unemotional though. Not angry when you say “no”. Increase reward when the dog tolerates a nail without growling. Maybe cut back to one or two feet per session for a short time until this behavior is in check. Don’t hesitate to consult a trainer or two to get more insight. I personally am not a trainer, I just know what I would try having worked with dogs for a while. Growling is a warning so if you ever think your dog might actually bite, be cautious. I would maybe even consider a muzzle if it was “bad” end to make you think he might bite. But ideally, this behavior is just him saying “I don’t like this” and you’re going to be able to communicate (over many sessions) “I know you don’t like it, but we gotta do it and you gotta behave.”

@@GoodDogGrooming Thank you so much for your feedback! When he was first learning how to stand on the table for grooming, I used a lot of treats, and we did short sessions. I will try brining the treats back into it again, and doing 1 paw at a time, like in the beginning. The thought of a muzzle did go through my mind... we don't have one yet, and I hope not to need one for grooming... but I do hear it is good to have on hand, in case they happen to get hurt or something. It's so weird how a behavior like this can just "pop up," he is still young and learning, thanks again!

There’s often at least some level of desensitization that needs to take place in order for a dog to tolerate nail clipping and dremeling. I have a video about desensitization: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gny2ZnmPi8uSgtE but the gist is you want your training sessions to be way more positive than negative. If this means shorter sessions, that’s ok. There are dogs that can only handle having one nail done in a session… so in that case I would do one nail a day every day for a while… keeping the session as positive as possible with some kind of high value reward. Eventually you should be able to move up to 2 nails per session… and slowly grow from there. Hope that helps!
