Hey bro, quick question, does distrokid collect only the master royalties? Is that also the same as the mechanical royalties?
@thelynngentry
@thelynngentry 3 жыл бұрын
@@emmanuelsimpson1751 mechanicals for the most part come from the physical sell of music(ie. CD's, Tapes, Vinyls) for the most part they are dealing because of streaming. Master royalties are what you would get from a Label depending on your percentage, but the include mechanicals and streaming(Public Performance Royalties) as well as most other revenue streams that the label would receive for your music. Distrokid is going to pay you for streaming, which is different than Mechanicals. Dtistrokid is dealing with your Public Performance Royalties off of streaming.

Hey Kato, great content! And as someone who is already set with everything I believe you could have the answer to my question - I'm still curious how does PRO come to amount that will be payed out to a songwriter generated through streams? We know that distributor pays for streams generated through master recording and there is a revenue set for one stream ( roughly, we can say that 1 000 000 streams on Spotify will generate around 4000$ from master side), but can we say what value that song will generate on the composition side for the same amount of the streams? Is there any formula? Or is there any ratio for that? Thanks in advance.

@chuckmullins9338
@chuckmullins9338 3 жыл бұрын
You register your beat on everything the same way. HOWEVER Exclusive rights, from what i understand, is a one time private exchange between you and the artist buying it from you. You give the artist what you've created and that's the last money you receive. Honestly vie seen lots of producers sell an exclusive though and keep the beat on here because its got so many views and they just change the description to SOLD and delete the links to purchase it. Because that video makes your channel better, makes money, and if that beat pops up in some bloggers video somewhere you can still probably collect royalties. But exclusive is supposed to = gave away all rights to the person who bought it.

Absolutely. I produce instrumental music and I registered for everything Kato mentioned. You need to sign/register with the ones he mentioned so that all bases are covered and you’re not leaving money on the table. My PRO is BMI which allows me to claim both the writers and publishers share of my royalties, but ASCAP will allow you to do the same. This is if you’re based in the US. I’m not sure what the PRO is outside of the States. It’s a worthwhile invest to register though.

You cant register instrumentals with Sound exchange. It only allows you to register it if someone made a song to your beat and released it. So Is song trust the same thing? And also how can we collect the royalties from people who used our beats on tiktok?? I have thousands of views/listens on my beats from tiktok who used in their videos.
@KatoHipHop

I dont believe tiktok pays out directly for streams yet. its probably in the works though. u also can collect royalties from soundexchange IF you own a share of the Master recording. u would just need a letter of direction from the Artist. SongTrust has a very simple registration process for the music. you need all 4 of these to collect everything. links are in the description.

Hello Kato, Thank you for your video. I would just like to add that in Europe, the collecting societies (referred to as the central management societies "CMO") actually collect also mechanical royalties and distribute them accordingly - meaning also to the USA (Harry Fox agency, AMRA). For the American authors this means go and claim your royalties by Harry Fox/ AMRA. For the European authors this means that they do not need a publishing administrator because the CMOs are doing the whole administration for them. I think this is a source of big confusion nowaydays... Also I do not get why to sign up with Sound Exchange - from my point of view, digital performance royalties are taken care of by CMOs as well - digital performance is still a performance, so there should be BMI and ASCAP in the USA to take care of these roylaties, shouldn't they? Thank you, Lucie

Hey, So BMI, ASCAP and SESAC claim that they will handle things that they necessarily aren't very good at. They are good at collecting Performance royalties. Not digital ones like sirious, or xm. From what I understand that has to do with the fact that those digital radios stream internationally. American PROS are good at collecting things within their country. I watch this speech from the founder of tunecore maybe once or twice a year. Check out this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2Org4J_bLCjhq8 fast forward to 11:18

Thank you so much, Kato. But I'm little bit lost. Maybe you can help me figure out 🙄 I am now releasing 2 releases with a CD Baby PRO plan. But I'm confused and can't figure out what I should choose. I know that CD Baby's PRO plan includes the services of Songtrust. But I plan to choose another distributor aftar that to release more music per year. But now they (CD Baby) ask me: "Please directly affiliate yourself as a songwriter with your local Performance Rights Organization" to complete the Current PRO Affiliation Status. I live in Ukraine. and they recomend me connected to local PRO: NGO-UACRR, but this guys take 20% commision which more than ASCAP take. But CD Baby tells me ASCAP is only if I'm in US. And for Ukraine I must to choose NGO-UACRR 😵‍💫 My main question is do I need to connect to PRO if I plan to sign up for Songtrust later. And if I'm not affiliate with any of PRO, do Songtrust automatically registered me with PRO or IMRO so that I don't pay twice (if I need join ASCAP, for example)? And do I able to tell CD Baby that I have affiliated with PRO after that? It all sounds very difficult to me, as it is 🤭Help me please 🤯

Controlled Compositions: If any selection or musical composition, or any portion thereof, recorded in the Masters hereunder is written or composed by Producer, in whole or in part, alone or in collaboration with others, or is owned or controlled, in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, by Producer or any person, firm, or corporation in which Producer has a direct or indirect interest, then such selection and/or musical composition shall be hereinafter referred to as a "Controlled Composition". Producer hereby agrees to issue or cause to be issued, as applicable, to Artist, or Artist's designees, mechanical licenses (including, without limitation, any "first use" mechanical licenses) and other licenses in respect of each Controlled Composition subject to the same terms and conditions as are applicable to selections and musical compositions written, composed, owned, or controlled, in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, by Artist, which are embodied on the Master or any recording recorded under this agreement. For that license, on the United States and Canada sales, Artist will pay mechanical royalties at one hundred percent (100%) of the minimum statutory rate, subject to no cap of that rate for albums and/or EPs. For license outside the United States and Canada, the mechanical royalty rate will be the rate prevailing on an industry-wide basis in the country concerned on the date that this agreement has been entered into. Producer hereby grants Artist a license to reproduce Controlled Compositions that are embodied on the Master produced hereunder in synchronization with and in time relation to visual images featuring Artist's performances in so-called promotional "video programs", on a royalty-free basis and in so-called commercial "video programs", in being understood that Producer shall be entitled to Producer's pro-rata share of any royalties attributable to such commercial "video programs". that's only half, your missing a PRO, and sound exchange. So if your music pops up on xm radio, sirious, or some live version or video; then that money is going in the black box until you claim it.

Kato...BMI asking for you to turn over the rights to your music to them for the time that you are under contract with them. Is this something that is normal and necessary? If I turn over ALL RIGHTS to them I have no say so over my music anymore until the contract is up. That's scary!

Great video. One of the best on a complicated topic. Why would there be uncollected money on the streaming side? Aren't the distributors supposed to take that back from the streaming platforms they work with?
