This right here…one of the many reasons we love you guys…clean clean clean in the coop and nesting boxes. We are firm believers in not washing our eggs. We keep them clean from the start. If we get a dirty one we keep it. Customers first! We have to have an egg license here. Booo

Great points Rich! It all starts in the box. If you start there you will save yourself a lot of time and effort later as well as producing a much 'cleaner' egg. Some of our girls are very independent and every so often they will find another place to lay instead of in the box. Those ladies treasures we keep for ourselves, but kindly try to hope they will return to the box. The occasional broody can be an issue as well.

does ur straw ever get mold growth? would pine shavings be better for them to stay clean? what material do you keep in ur nesting boxes, and do you ever use dried already used coffee grounds? what about equine bedding pellets???...new just starting so have questions...if you have a video please link...I'm not a fan of a lot of straw given being allergic to straw dust and mold spores it carries, so your opinion please?
@TheOldSwedesFarm Жыл бұрын
We've never had mold on our straw. We bring the straw out to the compost pile twice a year. I'm sure pine shavings would work well too. We have such a large area in the barn, and you can imagine the cost of pine shavings for me. It would be hundreds of dollars just to get a small level across the barn. The same with the coffee grounds. I don't need to get too creative as straw is cheap and it works so well. We keep our door open every day, so the dust level is low. I hope this answered your question. Let us know what else you need. Thanks for watching Judi!
