Mexican Sunflower is a most welcome plant in my garden. Mine grew to 8 feet tall and one summer day, I counted 11 Monarch butterflies, 1 giant tiger swallowtail, 2 hummingbirds and many bees and smaller insects. In late summer early fall, the goldfinches come for the seeds. I will always grow this plant in my garden! The lower foliage turns raggedy thru the season so be sure to plant some kind of 2 foot tall flowers in front. My purple Cosmos looked lovely there.

I was hoping to save seeds from my tithonia, but they were taking too long to dry. Thanks for showing us how. I'm also in zone 5b, and like you I like to get an early start on my garden cleanup. I've experienced doing it in the cold and rain, and don't want to do that again.

You're very welcome. Our nighttime temps will be in the high 30F starting next week and the leaves are steadily falling now. I'm trying to tackle cleaning up one small area every few days so that I don't feel overwhelmed. I also need to start getting plants ready for overwintering. From NZ. Question is when sowing seeds, do you just scatter them onto the garden and lightly cover. Or do seeds need to be planted in pots to take first? Love watching your vids. Thanks

I am in Michigan so I start about 4 to 6 seeds indoors in early spring. As they grow, I choose the two strongest seedlings to keep. The mature plant can grow from 6 to 8 ft high and 4 to 6 ft wide! In mid May when our night temps reach 50 I will plant them out. In your area you can prob just start the seeds at any time.

I am planning to scatter the seeds outdoors. It looks like they need light to germinate so I will just be pressing them into the soil and not covering them. I also plan to start some seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before my last frost date. I will also not be covering those seeds but instead just lightly pressing them into soil. Good luck, my friend! 🥰🌻
