Yep, discovered these a couple of years ago. They are beautiful, add lots of colour to the Cardenas and they love our hot summers in Adelaide.

I think I get it. 1. In July or August, collect dry brown seed pods. 2. Plant the seeds in full sunlight. 3. Keep the seeds moist for the first week, Then taper water to weekly. 4.They germinate in a week. Great! Thanks. My wife and I love the bright color!

Thanks for yr video. I may have collected the pods too early (they weren't brown yet).. will they ripen in a open glass jar please? Also i want to grow osteospurnam from seed. Any tips please (from uk). Thanks.

Hi Pat! Nice to hear from someone in the UK 🇬🇧 you can always give it a try it can’t hurt.. but most likely the seeds aren’t viable :/ I have a how to grow Osteospermum from seed on my channel, check it out ❤️

I see sowing in trays is no problem. Here in Belgium they advice to sow in full ground as early as possible but when i do it in trays i think more will sprout then when it is so cold outside.

Yes it’s best you make a little greenhouse for them :)

Those little white flowers next to them, what is their name? I have them too
@BirdofParadise Жыл бұрын
They are called alyssum. They come in white and even purple. They are one of my favorite flowers, because even though they’re annuals, they reseed themselves. They come back every year even more beautiful :) happy gardening!

It’s known by a few names: statice, sea lavender or limonium sinuatum:)

Ststice. The great thing about statice is they keep this intense purple color for months after the dry out!

Thanks for the great video! Question for you...do you direct sow them or do you wait until next spring and transplant the starts? Or perhaps both?
@BirdofParadise2 жыл бұрын
I directly sow them :) but it’s really up to you!
@jomahuntington6968 Жыл бұрын
Direct sow they have very sensitive roots, they need cold stratification and do not cover they need direct sunlight to geminate

Winter, in zone 6: can the seeds be dropped in Oct when the temperature starts to drop below 50 F (11 C), and then survive freezing through the winter? My regular poppies self-seed from August to October, & then go through the winter, (with temps reaching 10 F (-10 C). By April, they have germinated and begin to grow. By mid May, the flowers start showing. ?
@BirdofParadise Жыл бұрын
Yes they can, from what I’ve seen. They are frost tolerant and often need cold stratification to germinate. Please let me know how it goes! Happy Gardening!

@@BirdofParadise Thank you for the response. I definitely will send you that report - if I remember. But I will also collect seeds to drop in April.

How come there are two different seed head shapes, for poppy flowers? 🤔 one is circular and the other is long and flat
@BirdofParadise Жыл бұрын
I haven’t seen one that’s flat, just round.. maybe it’s another type of poppy and not a California poppy?

I live in the Northeast. Should I wait until next Spring to try this?
@BirdofParadise Жыл бұрын
You can start collecting the seeds now. If I were you, I wouldn’t plant them until after the last frost. Happy gardening :)

It's 2024 & the month of May, & ALL of my California Poppy plants are LOADED with curing seedpods! I live in SW CA desert ... & I suspect you live on the coast, according to that difference. My Poppies die back when it gets very hot, unless I keep them watered. Even so, they just don't do so well in desert summer heat!

I hear that! It’s really heating up isn’t it :) I get so excited seeing the pods.. I’m jealous 😆
