Many people have asked us why their dog's coat is tangled or matted when they do brush them regularly. Therefore, we've decided to make a video demonstrating how to safely work out the tangles and matted hair in the coat. Special thanks to Lucy and Linus' mommy for giving us permission to use Lucy for this video (Linus is the one in the background making all the extra noise.)

I've seen a lot of tips and so not sure what is the right way! Also I feel like I am removing way more hair then I need to. But she's super matted from her harness and scratching behind her ears. I've been at this off and on all day! Again taking it slow!

@@kimberlyj7441 if they’re big and getting close to the skin best thing is to just shave them. keep her harness time limited, don’t leave it on around the house only when out. keep the hair underneath her ears short so it doesn’t continue to matt, brush and comb her coat 2x daily, never bathe her knotted or matted as they will get much worse.

You are very gentle with the dog. That's good to see. Your voice is also calm which I'm sure helps keep the dog calm. Thank you for posting. I have a large dog that I have to brush out and he has a lot of tangles. Now I know how to do it without cutting them out.

Fab choice of music..who is that so I can amazon dot com them for this dog house. Blessings Pam and Tony.

Sometimes shaving the coat down and starting fresh is the best option. It depends on several different factors. Obviously how matted the coat is matters, but also whether the dog will tolerate it or not is very important to consider. Unfortunately there's no one right answer for all situations. You have to take all things into consideration and do what is best for both you and your dog.

Thank you. I just took my 1 year old Maltipoo to the groomer. She has been before but the virus issue caused us to be a few months late this time. She does have some matting. I have been brushing her and didn't realize how insufficient it was. I realized I need new grooming tools at home and decided I had better watch a video. This video was tremendously helpful. I hope to prevent her from ever having any knots again.

I said about the same thing! I don't even know why I watch her videos It aggravates me to no end! I am not a groomer never claimed to be but in my life time I've owned many different breeds of dogs , some pure bred, some mixed mutts or as I called them "My Heinz 57's" I have groomed every single one on my own even as young as 9 years old, I've never shaved a dog. I brush, I comb, I de matt, I use scissors and cut what I need to, and to trim, my dogs enjoyed every minute of it. Only dog I ever owned that got any shaving, Was our mini Schnauzer and my dad did it, gave him the hair cut that is standard of the breed. my heart rate goes out of this world when I watch her video's it's pathetic how she not only treats the dogs, but half the pet parents, and her boyfriend! She treats him like he's a dog as well! and I want to cry every time I see her shave a double coated dog, the poor dog is now ruined for life , it'll not be able to properly regulate it's body heat, it'll over heat in the summer. I'm curious though as to how many dogs have died after being in her care, and she doesn't claim it's her fault. I'm sure she'd blame it on " Old age" " Health issues" or something else, but of course not her fault, but she comes off as a narcissistic person so I wouldn't expect any less out of her.

Thank you for watching and the encouraging comment, John! Good luck with the brushing, and remember that it's not about how fast you can do it so just take your time, enjoy yourself, and remain in the moment. I like to focus on my breathing, making sure it is slow and deep and that I am breathing through my belly rather than my chest. The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your dog will be.

Just rescued a Poodle family a couple months ago (mom, dad & 3 little 3 wk. old puppy boys- mill dogs, deceased owner) & have never dealt with this breed before. Parents were filthy & matted beyond belief, so I took them to a prof groomer. They came back bleeding cuts shaved into faces & ears! Not doing that again & I love their sweet people-oriented personalities, so I thank you for this video & your obvious love & concern for the dog's comfort & emotional state. I want to learn to groom them myself & this was very encouraging. The others I've watched on toob treated the dogs like stuffed animals. :(

V F Osbourn I know what you mean. When I first started grooming and watching videos on grooming, I felt the same way you did. But after working with so many dogs for so many years I understand how someone can get desensitized to how they handle the dogs. I'm not saying that it's right or that it is excusable behavior, only that I now understand how it could happen. It's easy to let the pressures of time and the demands of others overwhelm us and stress us out. We must constantly remind ourselves to breathe and remain calm. Self control is an art, and only through mastering the control of self can we produce beautiful art work. Thank you so much for the high compliment, and I really appreciate you watching!

I have to educate my clients ALL THE TIME about the comb vs the brush. Almost all of them never use a comb and then wonder why their dog is matted. I break up matts with my thinning shears and then work them out with my comb. I never use the rake or matt splitter, only my thinning shears.
@JunTheGroomer1

+amandahope1981 I believe most clients think of a brush vs comb because us humans use a brush and not a comb. :) We've used thinning shears before also. The rake and matt splitter are other tools to help with tangles and matts.

amandahope1981 I’m glad to hear someone out there that educated people about proper coat maintenance. I had NO CLUE when I adopted a poodle rescue how important it is to brush and keep the coat mat free. I wasn’t aware how uncomfortable it could be for the dog. Now I’ve been schooled on proper brushing etc. My poodle is a breeze to groom and she’s just happier to be tangle free. Get out the brush people!! 🐩

Jun, I am a Professional groomer at an animal hospital. We see pets that have been groomed at home who have been injured with thinners and mat breakers. To me, these are tools for experienced professionals. It would be so easy to slice a pet with a mat splitter without even meaning to. I watched a groomer at a competition completely de-glove a Poodle ear with a mat splitter. It was a toy Poodle and the skin peeled completely off with the mat. These tools can be very dangerous. If more than a brush and comb are needed, it's time to get a professional groom and then begin again at home. In my respectful opinion, of course.

I don't think it has an actual name, but it's usually referred to as a "dematting tool". There are 2 kinds that I really like, one is like a "Freddy Kruger" type long knives and the other is like a bear claw. Sorry, I wish I had specific names for them, but they are under the de-matting tools categories. Some of the best carding tools are de-matting tools.

I might use some oil as well. Gonna rub neem oil on the belly today, maybe a coconut oil..i hate the furminator so heavy..i was told to get a big one.. but your hand doesn't grow for a big pet.. better to have ssmall one and be gentle.. then use it on the cat..Maybe coconut spray?

@@lisettecallis5329 Cocoanut oil helps a lot. I wouldn't suggest using any essential oils because I know a lady who has a daughter that used essential oils to kill fleas and they killed both poodles. The poor daughter was devastated. I agree it's a great idea to purchase the necessary tools to dematt the dog and save money on groomers if you can. I have actually been grooming my miniature apricot poodle since he was 8 weeks old. He is 2 years old now so I've saved a shit load of cash. I had to put out a fair bit of money at the beginning to purchase the scissors, clippers and all the necessary stuff, but I have definitely saved a bundle.

@@lauriejkase3111 neem oil is not like essential oil. It kills fungus and fleas, mites etc. I have used essential oils to save my portidooldes life, but not for flea control. i am not sure what this person did and how she killed the dogs, or if that was something else she used with it. There is a lot of misinformation on terpenes, flea and worming medications; sometimes the stuff kills the bugs and that kills the patient! other coincidences with wrong things used and additives abound..blaming it on the nutrient; ie with iodine and b3 and other substances I do know about, i can see the flaws in the "scientifc papers" experiments written on them, becuase i know those substances and also have conducted studies in psychology, so know how to read them correctly. ne should treat the yard for fleas, with lyme or DE. One should clean the house with alcohol and essential oils, or just alcohol. Regularly and spray it everywhere when there are fleas! you could probably use ozone if you could ge tthe pets out for hours. one thing ive done is to apply flea meds, then rinse the little vials with a tiny bit of water, and tip it on the carpet edges, repeat a few times with each vial.

I know this is a super old comment, but for our doggo we use treats to keep him in place (hes VERY food motivated), and also groom him in the kitchen where we can kinda maneuver him against the countertops... so he cant spin away from us, just try to be calm and get him used to the brushes and combs, our boy is adopted and was terribly matted and terrified of brushing, now he wags his tail when he sees the brush, he knows treats are comming ;) its about finding something that your dog loves and having groomtime associated with that thing! The bath and blow-drying is the most important part when grooming a poodle. Without a solid foundation it doesn't matter how pretty you make the house. It won't stand the test of time. Good luck, and I hope you continue grooming!

thank you so much very informative. I have a wheaten terrier and a rat terrier poodle with the same or very similar coats you demonstrated, very helpful. That was refreshing to watch, instead of just hearing " its matted and I'm not dealing with it, I'm shaving it down" no matter what type of dog it is including double coated. The last thing you used I have one but mine is called a Fur Genie - got it off amazon, It came with 3 different sizes of "combs" I use it on my Pit Bull every day he loves that thing! he also sheds non stop. But when I got it it was mainly for one of my cats who's a medium hair cat and I dislike the slicker brushes even on dogs. And I was doggy sitting my sister in laws Golden Retriever a lot and she only used a slicker brush on her :( She was gone for a week, and came back to " A whole new dog" nicely brushed out with my Fur Genie, and a comb (A human comb it's all I had lol) had a bath and was looking adorable :)

great vid and tips as always, i would love any tips on how to groom the face of a nervous dog even when sedated for grooming that's when i have most problems as cant have the muzzle on and fear for her safety as she tries to bite the clippers or scissors - so far managed to do it with a lot of patience and been bitten a lot! would appreciate anything that you could suggest that is less stressful for her (and me!) would be fab xx

ducatirose Thank you so much for the high compliments! I really appreciate it :-) I always tell people that what we are doing is conveying our intention to help and love the dog through our thoughts and feelings so that it can radiate out through our touch. It's a feeling and it is very difficult to describe a feeling. You must feel it to know it, and once you do you can explain it to others perfectly but they still will not truly understand until they feel it for themselves. Our thoughts help create the necessary feelings so that the dog can feel the energy, and dogs respond to our energy rather than our words and actions. I try to keep my thoughts focused on my intention to help the dog and love the dog - "I intend to help you, and I love you." This keeps my mind focused on postive thoughts and feelings. "I don't want to hurt you" or "Please don't bite me" are not recommended because the focus is on "hurt" or "bite", and that will create tension and negative feelings. Controlling our thoughts and feelings is the key. If you haven't already seen my other videos, I'm going to give you a few links to videos that may help. Thank you again for such a great question that I believe is one of the biggest challenges that dog groomers face. I appreciate you!

A strong suggestion on how you are removing the matted hair. Ask your friends who have long hair, you ALWAYS start at the bottom and work your way up, and don't yank so hard. More time and more patience please!

Thank you so much. I love your video. You care for the animals and are very gentle and calming. My miniature poodle went on vacation with us and jumped in the water every day. 10 days later she came home so matted that I am afraid to try to groom her. I tried cutting in to the mats with scissors. I used cream rinse and it helped but didn't do the trick. I am inclined to give her a scissor cut???? What do you suggest.
@JunTheGroomer1
@JunTheGroomer1 10 жыл бұрын
Maria Hinojosa Sounds like it's time to remove the coat and start all over. Since we're coming into the fall season (depending on where you live), it's actually a better time to shave than it would be in the summer. I don't like to shave a coat off, but when the entire coat is matted to the skin we must consider the dog's physical and emotional wellbeing. I wouldn't try to scissor cut a matted coat, personally. But it all depends on how much time and effort you are willing to put into it. I've worked on matted dogs for over 12 hours on several occasions, and I learned that I will never put myself or the dog through that ever again.

Thanks so much for your videos! I have a 16-1/2 year old Bichon. She has matts and some skin eruptions on her back, but desperately needs to be groomed. I watched your "dog I couldn't groom" video - she's just about his size. The last time I took her to the groomer, who's very good, it was just too much for the dog. She "screamed" most of the time and was completely stressed. She's also blind, which may be increasing her nervousness in unfamiliar surroundings. I need to learn to overcome my own nervousness and fear of hurting her and be more confident in handling her when she tries to pull away. I don't have a set up with the leash overhead - would it really help to make up something like that? Do you have / or would you consider making a video for nervous newbies like me on holding techniques, especially for managing an unhappy older dog (not biting, just very squirmy). Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us. Your love and patience really show!!
@JunTheGroomer1

Yes, the video called "Our First Rescue Day" would address handling an old, nervous dog. It is a good idea to have a safety loop overhead to provide stability and control. It seems like a "mean" thing to do until they drop to the floor and land wrong. The best advice I can give is to first get into a calm and relaxed state of mind. Breathe slow and visualize positive results. Then when you approach your dog, do it with complete confidence that everything is going to happen exactly how you want it to happen. This is the most important part of grooming - not the washing or clipping. The washing and clipping takes care of itself once you have confidence in yourself. You are capable of so much more than you give yourself credit for, and the idea to try grooming your dog only came to you because you are capable of making it happen. Thank you so much for your encouraging comments, and I really appreciate you watching our videos!

THANK YOU for this extremely informative tutorial! And a new "rake" tool I just had a follow up question..my poodle is a strong little guy but he's only 4 pounds and I'm assuming that his size has something to do with the amount of sensitivity he has when we brush out his knots. We came back from a long vacation and my baby is fully matted :( It has happened before but I'm terrified of bringing him to the groomers for a full body shave. We're very delicately, one day at a time, brushing him out but our biggest obstacle is his underarms, belly and butt (he's not neutered so it's a sensitive spot for his man parts) so I was wondering if you had any tips on how to calm him down so I can get to those spots or should I just cut/shave (we used to do his haircuts ourselves but we're definitely not experts) underneath his arms and his belly? His top hair is about 3 inches long at this point but his belly is ALL knots. If you're able to help, thanks so much! If not, still a great video :)

Roula How did your situation work out? I also have a 4lb toy poodle, hair sounds about the same length. She's not matted too badly, but there still are some problem areas. She was just spayed, so the cone on her neck is matting her up. Also, I found an extremely sensitive spot just under/behind her ear. We can barely touch it without her freaking out, I feel so bad about it. Thinking about a detangler before coming, since she is so jumpy to the touch on these spots.
@roula5656

It wasnt too bad! I had a few groomers tell me how difficult it is and sort of give me a "you can't handle it" attitude but we still did it. I love my baby so much and wouldn't do anything intense and honestly he hates grooming regardless of the method. We did section by section and it DOES take alot of patience- you want to be as gentle as possible.

(2) We started off with a brushing (love the li'l pals XS brush) to loosen some hairs, then went in with a dematting brush (see Safari de-matting), scooped up the detached knots with another type of dematter afterwards (Dogwidgets dematting comb brush is an example), brush again and finally went in with a fine tooth comb to GENTLY brush out the leftover knots. Like I said, the key was maintaining my gentle hand and also, very important, cutting out the knots that I knew were too big to comb out. Of course, I definitely tried NOT to just cut all his knots out because I was trying to keep his hair so I would try to 'comb' it out with the steps I listed above and break it down to the smallest size before cutting or at least comb it out as far away from his skin as possible. Brushing with a standard brush over and over and in between and of course and finished it with a haircut (which by the way we've done for the past year and bf knows how to cut hair so we know how to work it over him). GOOD LUCK! This video was the best! We couldnt have done it without him!

Thanks for the tips. However, you don't show or discuss extreme mats that cannot be removed with regular or special combing tools. These mats can be removed using scizzors. However, if the mat is close to the skin, use grooming clippers.
