There's an additional layer to burnout as you age. You physically don't recover as fast, get injured easier, etc. But you also (or at least I do) feel anxious when you're not training because you feel like your athleticism is fading and not using it is a waste.

Yup I don't get burned out so much as I get injured. The forced breaks are horrible, I feel like a junkie in need of a fix, and I also have experience at that so I know what I mean.

If you arent competing, just ask your doc for low dose testosterone to maintain your levels. It can help you maintain recovery levels as you age. You'll still drop, as the doctor isnt gonna give you as much as like bodybuilders take, but the drop will be way slower for a lot of men.

Great topic! This is a really good reminder for anyone who trains, but I think especially for school owners. I recently took a day away from teaching to focus on personal errands and get a bit of a recharge. My students were supportive, and I reminded myself that taking a break now and then helps me maintain the proper quality of instruction they deserve.

@@metrolinamartialarts Can't happen lol.. I grew up in biker central Ontario Canada.. home of the biggest massacre.. research the bandido massacre, you'll see where I grew up.. I knew the guys who killed a friend of mine to start it and the guy that got killed and this is a small town area but it's got it's numbskulls. I don't know all the bikers, but i grew up with their kids, we all went to the same school back then. But my brother was my biggest bully so it didn't matter where i lived. I started tkd at 10, did a few classes then I quit cause of the cartoon the Raccoons. I was teaching Matsubayashi ryu at 15 as Senpai at white. The fist time I saw my older brother attacked, he was 12, the older boy was 18 and they went through a store window, and then had a glass knife fight right in the street while adults watched. And my brother won that fight, and he was my bully so it's not hard for me to find the will to train. He used to attack me all the time. Fear has always been a very powerful motivator for me. It's part of why I've never lost a street fight in 37 years lol.

KZbin famous now lol. Good vid brother, burnout is definitely one of those things that we don't discuss a ton. It does help to prioritize something else as well as having a different goal to strive for. Been doing that myself recently, focusing more on answering questions in BJJ and being a better pad holder in Kickboxing. Not really training myself or lifting heavy. 3 weeks off does wonders for the mind and body.

I’ve been training for 5 months and have competed 3 times, 2 point competitions prior to my debut. My coach is trying to get me to fight again soon and I honestly don’t want to but I don’t want to come off as a bitch in his eyes since he’s old school. I just haven’t been feeling as great in training as I used to and have been a lot more tired than usual.

@@metrolinamartialarts One cure for Burnout is attending Seminars/Workshops! Throughout the 90's, while attending the local Tae Kwon Do studio, I'd take seasonal trips to big cities nearby that were hosting M A events. Usually Ninjutsu masters in Milwaukee & Dan Inosanto JKD in Minneapolis, but also Hapkido & new arts like BJJ. Fun to try new martial arts without the pressure of remembering the material for a future test.

I think there is another one - train your mental health. Everybody has an episode of something hitting them hard. At the beginning training is fun. Then after few days it's still fun but the hard thing is getting deeper and deeper in your mind, to the point where you are not thinking about training anymore. It also causes some kind of burnout because "why would I do this when it's not fun anymore because of the hard thing". Training your mental health will gladly improve your immunity to this kind of things, but when they actually appear - try to talk to someone. It could be your coach (they are most of the time older and dealt with some similar problems as you, just trust them), your friends (even if they don't get your point as good as you, sometimes even talking it out can help a lot) or even a therapist (they took a lot of knowledge just to be here to help you, especially the sport therapists could get your point). Stay safe and have fun everyone :)

I got swept up in the motions of routine and was just autonomous for a bit. So I brought a friend to training a few times and honestly seeing the gears turning and clicking as he learned and got smacked around was really satisfying. I have no motivation to go to hema right now. I've been doing longsword for more than a year now and it's kinda just hit me at this point, just how much time you have to put into this in order to actually be good with a sword. If I go I know I'll just be there doing drills that don't come naturally and aren't fun. So I usually say that I'll go, but then procrastinate and get there 30 minutes late and just decide to wait 30 more minutes to go in. And then I do the dagger and grappling classes because those are always fun because they come more naturally to me. I think longsword will be fun in the future if I keep training to the point where I know what I'm doing, but I don't know if that much work is really worth it to me.

3:36 couple rules of thumb. 1. HARD WORK isn’t always SMART WORK. 2. BEING IN SHAPE doesn’t win a fight. 3. THINKING a MARTIAL ART has you all set self defense wise is a misconception. This is why we ought not boast. Ever. 4. PLAYFIGHTING WITH FRIENDS is no way to gage where we are at PHYSICALLY. When it comes to DEFENSE. 💯☺️🤛

What does that have to do with burnout?
@JKDVIPER
@JKDVIPER Жыл бұрын
@@metrolinamartialarts well because people will train the wrong way for a long time. And the consequences are pretty serious. Working out too much thinking physically fit is tough, thinking more work is good work. Not getting enough rest to recharge ones tank. And of course. These are just common misconceptions. Plus the added danger of being burned out as the real life situation comes into play, and now we have a hard time during crunch time.
@metrolinamartialarts

@@JKDVIPER I see. So, overworking can lead to burnout.
@JKDVIPER
@JKDVIPER Жыл бұрын
@@metrolinamartialarts ya but the overall point was. Why do we train at all if it doesn’t work? Number 2 was, don’t be of the mind that being in tip top shape means you’re ready for crunch time. (A REAL FIGHT) Meaning, we are training hits, we are training grappling, obviously for some reason other than looking cool right? And lastly, being SUPER TIRED in a burn out state is exactly the wrong medicine if you are concerned about needing a defense out there in the real world. All this has to do with YOU WINDING UP with a VALUABLE PRODUCT at the end of the day. Not lying to oneself.

I am in the middle of a huge burnout myself. I’ve been having a hard time finding the joy in Martial arts, when for so long it’s been my life. At the beginning of the year injured myself, and took some time off, but now I’m running into that exact problem of coming back. Do you have any advice for coming back when you feel like you’ve hit a wall?

Man, it's tough. I always think of little goals or small victories when training. Try to be present, acknowledge you're not where you want to be, but you're excited to get there. Each round, rep, roll, is building who you want to be. Failure included. Then watch some awesome anime or workout motivation stuff 🤣
