Aphasia affects a person's ability to speak, understand, read, and write, but it doesn't diminish their intelligence or emotions. When communicating, speak slowly and clearly, use simple words and sentences, and allow them extra time to respond. Non-verbal communication, such as gestures and facial expressions, can also be helpful. Most importantly, be patient, empathetic, and understanding-it can make all the difference in their day.
The goal of the American Stroke Foundation is to help stroke survivors continue improving and regaining independence in daily living skills, and to support stroke survivors and their families through their ongoing journey of "life after stroke."
