Your metaphor suggestion isn't bad advice by any means, but the way you phrased the example came off as domineering and condescending to me. Said like that, it most likely would've gotten my back up... The way you phrased it was like "this metaphor is how things are, I'm telling YOU what you're doing" as if you were dictating what her reality was. And then you followed it up with "do you see how that works?" as if you were teaching her something, like she had been too stupid to get it and you had to educate her. Just adding in three small words to the exact same analogy and phrasing it "I FEEL LIKE when you text him and spend energy and emotions..., it's like you're taking out of our bucket..." changes the tone and it creates the distinction that you're communicating YOUR reality without it sounding like you're trying to dictate hers. Instead of dictating to her that her actions are doing this thing, which implies intent, it differentiates that this is about how it FEELS to you. And communicating your FEELINGS is the intent behind the metaphor anyway, right? Just some feedback....
