Everyone knows that when you face a headwind on the way to work, you will most probably enjoy a headwind on the way back, because the wind has changed direction during the day!

@@AB-si4bg You did nothing wrong, it's just meteorology. It's most pronounced around bodies of water: during the day, they are cooler than the surrounding earth, and vice versa at night. So the wind does actually flip between morning and evening. And any not-perfectly-homogenous landscape will have this temperature gradient.

Gosh, watching this makes me thankful that I live in Australia. I never have to contend with snow or ice and I rarely have to contend with rain. The flip-side, of course, is that summer is going to be awful. I'm not sure how I will cope riding into work on days that are 40+ degrees Celsius. To be honest, when we hit the peak of summer, I may not, just for safety reasons with heat stroke and the like. Where I live, sadly, we don't have the cycling infrastructure that is there in the UK and continental Europe. This is why on days where there is extremely low visibility due to heavy fogs, I have made the decision not to ride, just because I fear cars won't see me until they are basically on top of me, even with all my lights and reflectors. I'm not a very experienced rider (yet... yet... give me time) and I don't want to put myself at risk due to that lack of experience. It's the "dead of winter" here at the moment though and I've been riding to work as soon as the sun is up in a jacket, a long sleeved t-shirt and some pants, with some gloves. Sure, it's a bit cold, but I have it so easy compared to those of you in the UK. I'd freak out if I had to ride (or drive... or possibly even walk) in the snow and ice. I've never so much as walked on, except for once, in the spring, 18 years ago!

Cycling glasses are essential for all weathers as they keep any grit and other debris out of your eyes. Stylish clear lens safety glasses can be bought for about £6 or so and they do the job very effectively.

Put your stuff on the bike not on your back like those clowns and you'll avoid extra sweat and pain on your saddle. "Breathing" cloth don't breath much when they are covered in water, so try to find a cheap waterproof jacket with extra ventilation that you can adjust to the weather.

What about those of us who wear glasses? any tips for that? I rode home on a rainy day once and luckily it was quiet and i took a side road, but decreased visibility due to wet glasses is something to consider. i saw said Matt wearing a helmet once with an "eye guard" of sorts, that seemed like a good option

Yeah right, not cycled up North I take it? Wind and rain come from all directions, rain is more often than not horizontal than vertical and is cold and stinging. Drivers are less than helpful in the main and among the worst are tanker drivers and taxis; road conditions? varied, in the main poor but some places absolutely abysmal and others sublimely wonderful, not really good roads past certain sections. Tow-paths are good yet you need to watch for glass and sharp gravel stones. Tow-paths will be useful if you feel less assured using roads, be careful of falling into the canal though!

Light weight pure cotton clothing. Don't wear nylon/cotton blended clothing for they lock in your sweat and make you feel hotter. Taken from a Canadian snowbird who made frequent visits to Texas and Oklahoma. Pure cotton keeps you cool. Pure cotton does not have to be expensive. The main way to stay cool is to promote proper sweating and promote convection near your skin. When the rain hits hard cover that light cotton shirt with a GorTex lined light weight wind breaker. GorTex is a one way moisture membrane that allows sweat to breath out while keeping the driving rain out.

I live in the Netherlands and i have been cycling to school or work my whole life. My tip would be: get a rain jacket, a rain trousers and some overshoes and you are really good to go. On rainy days i always have my trousers and overshoes in my rucksack and im wearing a North face waterproof jacket anyway so im always ready :) Oke it sucks when its wet and cold but cycling is super cheap, good for my health AND my destressor after a buzy day at work, for me its worth the investments ;) p.s. in the winter you can also buy waterproof gloves so your fingers dont fall of after 3 minutes :P

Rainproof overtrousers are a must! They may not look very glamorous en route but your cycling colleagues who lack them will regard you with envy, like mine - as they search the old uniform box and wear some ill-fitting trousers while drying their own on the radiator and you remove your overtrousers to reveal your bone dry clothes underneath! 🤗

@Miant
@Miant 6 жыл бұрын
If it's hot enough to overheat your skull, as it is where I live, a helmet can make said heat even worse. The more comfortable your brain is, the less likely you are to make a mistake that a helmet would shield you from in the first place.
@mrelano65
@mrelano65 5 жыл бұрын
@@Miant I fully agree. I cycle all year but much more in summer. I don't wear a helmet as it pushes hair down creating a barrier that prevents heat from being released. This will "cook" the brain and possibly lead to heat stroke.
