I have been working on leveling a large area that was almost 6" low at one end. We poured 74 bags of 80# concrete and then I began pouring the leveling compound. 32 bags later and I'm almost there! I have a few areas that have about a 1/8" gap and was thinking of just using a trowel but see where the straight edge is very helpful. Also, using a sponge to feather the edges is something I never did, but will do when I go back to fill the small gaps. Thank you! I am confident that I can now finish this floor and then install engineered flooring over it.

Should I get a 3/4 x 4 inch thick or 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch thick. Thicker screed is stiffer but Is there an advantage to using a thicker screed with leveling compound? Or would it be worse?

This is by far the best content on KZbin for self leveler! Your videos have been a huge help to me. I’m going to try this in some areas to fix a pour that didn’t go so perfect, I’m grinding down the high spots and have made great progress, I still have some very shallow low spots to fill. Only about 1/16th. I was thinking maybe planipatch? 🤔but the areas are pretty wide so I thinking of trying this. I used mapei “self leveler plus” which the rep told me is exactly the same as novoplan 2 plus. They say 5 - 5.28 quarts of water to a bag, do you use slightly more water when using it this way? Thank you!🙏🏻
@MrYoucandoityourselfАй бұрын
For floor installation 1/16 for 8 feet- it’s nothing. You can leave it as it is, because by the code 1/8” for 8 feet OK. If you’re going to fill it up be very accurate. You can try add little bit more water, if recommended amount to thick for you. Don’t forget to use a primer again- it’s very important for better bonding, for each application. Thanks 🙏

Fill or seal the crack. Also seal any holes in the floor (common in wood floors). Feathering compound, tape of cracks and around wall perimeters where drywall gaps above the floor as material will seep under to fill voids. Neglecting these probable problem areas results in leveling compound draining as the material sets up resulting in depressions that have to be fill after the pour.

@@scasny The 15-20 minute quick-setting is a major no-no to a DYI-er, and is really unnecessary. Been there, done that. A serious PITA when you have to rush and there's no workable window at all, as it starts to set even before fully leveling out. Those are typically meant for contractors who need to be able to tile within hours of pouring it, and it does need to be troweled out or screeded quickly, or it will make things worse than they were.

@Chris112492 жыл бұрын
Garage will have cars on it, this might be too weak especially if it's 1/8 or 1/4" thin. Also, garage usually has an aggressive slope to get water out. That's all I know, and usually concrete is used to build it up when people make it a dwelling unit. If you want to just paint the garage floor, I'd use a polyurethane or epoxy coating, but grind the existing concrete first so that it will stick and no oil.

@@ivanobar1 Dear Ivan: Thank You for your email: The cost of ruffing the cement and cementing the high areas and level with mapei cement added up to thousands of dollars and it was not a solution . Since I do have carpentry skills we will build a proper wood framing to bring up the flooring and at the same time install a proper subfloor through that area and all adjacent rooms. I am comfortable with this solution because it will also be according to our local building codes.

@Dirk Bauman Thanks for responding. I had a similar problem as you but just 1/2” and 1/4” differences at some spots. I ended using around 9 bags of self leveling cement (expensive). In the future I think I’ll mostly fill low spots with cheap, but smooth, cement, and then add self leveling cement as the top layer. I also shims (cut to approx 1” square) under my level and glued them in place. I then filled the voids to the level of the shims. That was cheaper than “leveling” equipment. Thanks again, Marvin

Hello can you tell me why some people says that leveling must go with the directions of the wood, I believe that against the direction of the wood is the correct form but i would like to know if is any reason or they just wrong?
@MrYoucandoityourself4 жыл бұрын
We always check across first and then floor directions as well.

Great videos, I’ve watched loads off your channel. They have really helped me out over the past few years. Thanks for taking the time to make them. I can’t find the foam you fit round the edges anywhere in the UK. Can you suggest anything else I can use?
@MrYoucandoityourself4 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, it’s foam gasket, this foam tape you can find in lumber store, used for protection between concrete slab and wooden wall frames in house building. Now more clear?
@SteveTheFrench4 жыл бұрын
It’s a great idea that I want to try, I still can’t seem to find it anywhere. It’s must be called something different in the UK. I usually use expanding foam to fill the gaps and cut it off when dry. I have to wait for it to dry and sometimes it does let a little bit through.

@@SteveTheFrench We call it sill sealer in the US. It is a thin foam used between the concrete foundation and the sill plate. They have it at almost any big box hardware store.

Thanks for the video! Curious why/when you would use this method with the long straight edge versus just using a gauge rake and moving the leveling compound over the entire floor.
@MrYoucandoityourself3 жыл бұрын
With rake you can put same amount of compound everywhere, with straight edge only to the lover spots. Thanks!

The edges that your straight edge is on might be hight an low up and down as you go along . You should do the whole lot 8mm deep with aggregates. Your making the job hard work

I just did my 440 sq ft garage floor that was all cracked and sunk in some areas as much as 2 inches. Ended up using 42 50lb bags and it is still not good enough. I think I need another 50 bags to make it look right which would put the project at about $3000, ($30x50lb bag) I should have just ordered a cement truck with fine concrete and poured it over and leveled it using a concrete screed. Self leveling underlayment is not for big jobs, trust me. My back is shot ad the floor still looks like shit. If you're thinking about doing this I suggest you consult with a professional.
@MrYoucandoityourself3 жыл бұрын
Hi Adnan, the self leveling compound specially made for final coating. If you need to use the big volume of material, for sure better use the concrete. Thanks!
@paspeederforever37493 жыл бұрын
If that’s the way you are going to do it, why waste all the money on self leveler. You can just use a cheap non-modified thinset and do the same thing.
@MrYoucandoityourself3 жыл бұрын
I showed it only for your knowledge, but you can do whatever you want. Thanks!

The whole point of self leveling is to let the material do the work for you and keep you off your knees. Mix to the manufacturer's recommended water, pour it out over the entire floor and lightly smooth it. Now trowel or screed should be necessary ever. There are tools specific to self leveling underlayments that make the process easy and accurate. Don't get me wrong, what is shown here is good craftsmanship, but it is NOT how manufacturers recommend this type of product is used.
@MrYoucandoityourself4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe, great advice! Thanks
@913263 жыл бұрын
From experience, I can tell you that if you just poor and let self level with no screeding, no spiked roller, or blending the edges, it will be a disaster. Why do you comment on a professionals work when you have no idea? I've level hundreds of floors, how many have you done. I know the answer is ZERO by your comment.
@zatridevyatzemel Жыл бұрын
You'd be shocked to see the kind of mix consistency I have once had in the past while trying to "mix to the manufacturer's recommended water". - Self-leveling my a$$. The mix would just sit like a pile of mud and had to be manually troweled out all over the area. And - no, the water was freezing cold, so it wasn't too thick due to heat. The problem is tap water itself is very different geographically, and the PH, hardness, the content of salts and other deposits appears to impact the flowability of the resulting mix. So, if you're using distilled water - by all means stick to the recommendations. Otherwise, good luck following those to the tee! You've been warned.
