How to Condition your Paint Roller BEFORE Painting (for the smoothest finish)

I'm painting a 24" x 24" primed wood board with water-based chalkboard paint. The paint is really thick. Some people suggest painting the surface with a brush first before rolling with a dry roller to smooth the surface. But the paint dries way too quickly for that. So, can I put my roller into paint and roll it on to my surface even when it's acrylic paint? I'm going to use a foam roller.

You can definitely just put your roller straight in the paint. You're right, chalkboard paint is really thick. If you use a foam roller, you'll probably need to apply a few more layers because they'll be thin and you'll need to build up more layers. I've had best luck using a 1/4" nap (or even 3/8") with chalkboard paint, but not matter what, it's going to be hard to get a super smooth finish because of the type of paint it is. But you're right in that a roller will give a smoother finish than a brush with that paint because it doesn't level well.

What type of bag are using to line your paint tray?

I think in this video it was just plastic wrap. I usually use aluminum foil though because it stays in place a little better.

Good question! I should have said that in the video... it makes the roller take in the paint easier and more evenly. Also helps to pull off stray fibers when rolled on the cardboard

Really good question that I wish I mentioned in the video. I don't use these steps on foam rollers. You can spray but it doesn't really make a difference.
