Ohhh was this ever helpful. My late husband did all these types of things and I’m having to learn while maintaining a healthy or neurotic, depending on who you ask, attitude about safety. I remember the first time I used propane in my Van Conversion. I was spraying the hose on my stove every 5 minutes..and worse. But I would rather b safe than sorry. I have the 20 lb and the 5 lb and I couldn’t find anything until your video about this topic and how to convert. My concern was if the bigger tank would have to much pressure. So happy to hear I can easily convert while staying safe. Thanks again for very useful video.

@JonnyDIY Жыл бұрын
You should always hook the large tank up to the stiff line that has the control valve on it 👍
@largemarge160310 ай бұрын
@Kare, On later model camp-stoves, the steel tube screws into the side of the stove. The 'knob' on the steel line is the pressure regulator. . Without a regulator at the stove or at the twenty-pound five-gallon propane bottle, you get the entire pressure of the bottle. As you might imagine, a full bottle with five gallons has more pressure than a nearly-empty bottle with only a pound remaining. Thus, the need for a regulator for an even flow.

@@adjectivenouns3484 What do you mean by "not designed to withstand pressures..."? I've seen those small propane bottles bounce on concrete, fall down rocky hillsides, get kicked out of campfires where they accidentally fell and so on and never ever heard of one giving a problem. What world do you live in?

I am looking to run a butane stove from a large propane bottle. I was under the impression that propane is a higher pressure gas than butane, and therefore would need some means of regulating the pressure. Am i wrong?

Do they make a hose that goes directly from the valve on the tank to the small inlet on the stove itself, bypassing the flexible or rigid 1lb adapter? I'm looking for something that goes straight and has the proper regulation built in. I don't like propane gas in the first place, bust especially having an extra junction where things might become loose over time. It seems superfluous to me to have that extra piece in there. Any ideas? Thanks.

Not that I know of but a propane supplier or rv parts supplier could probably make one up out of parts on hand. They do stuff like that all the time for customers 👍

@al, Good point. Different regions use different bottles with different fittings. . 2003 in our ExpeditionVehicle, we did South America, twenty-four months twenty-four thousand miles. Had a Dickens of a time getting propane. . These days, we carry several full spare five-gallon twenty-pounder propane bottles.

Well yes and no. You can refill them, but they're not rated or legal to refill. I think there's only 1 company that's sells refillable 1 lb tanks, Flame King.

When I hook mine up to the 20lb I get minimal gas flow and low flame….much less than with a 1lb. Tried on two different tanks. Any hints?
@JonnyDIY2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes the conversion hose when you screw it on doesn't engage the valve all the way. I've heard others complain in the hose reviews of this problem before. May need to try a different hose setup
@medic5012 жыл бұрын
I had this problem with a Coleman two burner stove, trying to connect to a 15 lb tank - no gas flow to the burners. A pipe wrench and a bit of gorilla on the fitting where the bottle usually attaches let the pin depress the valve enough to open, allowing gas to flow, burner to light, coffee water to boil, etc! The same hose worked fine with hand tightening to a Little Buddy heater, so it must be how the different connections are machined...
@largemarge160310 ай бұрын
@mikey, Does your five-gallon twenty-pounder propane bottle have a regulator? Does your camp-stove have a regulator? The two would indeed create significant restrictions.

You need to use the regulator that comes with your camping stove. The hose or stiff line with the knob like I showed. In the comments people were referring to an additional regulator like the circular silver ones used with propane barbeques 👍

Cool stuff! Question for you if you know. I got a stove just like this from the father in law who scraps metal/hoards junk. It has the flexible line, but is missing the little wire stand for the bottle. Do you know if it's necessary or if the stiff line that the new ones use would work on it?
@JonnyDIY2 жыл бұрын
You could easily make a lil stand out of a stiff coat hanger to keep the tank upright. I believe they just dont want you to use the propane on it's side. And yes I think the newer stiff valve line will work, although they're not made as well
