Yep I wanted to use my receiver as a HDMI control so your advice to just hook my sound bar directly to my TV using the optical input was the best advice

Hi Michael ! I have a similar situation but I have a question: so all my speakers (In wall and in ceiling are going to my Yamaha receiver and I have an apple tv going to to input 1 in the Yamaha and an HDMO cable going from Yamaha to TV ARC. so If I hook up my sound bar using an optical to the TV, do I have to set the TV sound output to Optical? if so would all the speakers work (including the soundbar if I do that ?

yah, I'm going to heed the advice here and just use the soundbar. The Samsung sound bar sounds good but I don't like the single point of reference the sound comes from. I'll need to see if this Samsung has any compatible receivers and expand from the sound bar.

I did it years ago with a top of the line, at the time, Polk sound bar and a 12" velodyne sub. It actually sounded incredibly good. We had no room for speakers in our space, and quite honestly it worked. I had it connected to a Denon AVR, 4800 I believe.

I'm about to purchase an Denon AVR X4800 and was hoping to use my LG 5.1 soundbar ... TV eArc --> 4800 eArc --> 4800 HDMI out to LG SoundBar ... do you happen to know if this will work?

@@robainscough It should if you use the HDMI Monitor 2 output on the Denon out to the sound bar. Have you pulled up the Denon manual and looked to see what it says? That is where I would start. The manual should be readily available on the internet for free. Crutchfield usually links them in their product descriptions.

@@michaelwright1602 Thanks, I ended up getting the Bose Soundbar 900 + 700 sub, it apparently can work both sound and headphone Bluetooth (specifically with my Bose Q45s) ... I'll know if that's accurate tomorrow. The Denon x4800H is on "hold" for now ... the Denon manual doesn't really specify if HDMI out to SoundBar will work, and doesn't suggest it's eArc either.

So i just upgraded my home theater system with a Vizio 5.1.2 Atmos surround bar and while it sounds absolutely fantastic (and spacious), i wanted to also utilize my Pioneer Dolby Digital/5.1 receiver as well. The Pioneer throws tons of POWERFUL sound as it has 2 left, 2 center, 2 right as well as 2 left and 2 right surround speakers...not to mention an analog connected Yamaha (powered) 8" subwoofer. Since all of our viewing content is via FireCube 4k streaming, i finally was able to synch both the Vizio and Pioneer audio systems playing Dolby (Atmos and Digital 5.1) surround outputs. Essentially-i connected the Pioneer via coax (digital input) converted Toslink from my Samsung 85" 4k and the Firecube 4k directly to the Vizio 5.1.2 via HDMI. The Vizio is HDMI 2.1 connected to the Samsung 85" via eArc. The Vizio strips the Dolby digital stream directly off the Firecube for Atmos and DTx output processed to its 8 channels (speakers), and also passes the pcm stream to the tv hdmi input. The optical Toslink from the tv simultaneously gets decoded by the Pioneer and sends output to its 10 connected speakers + attached Yamaha powered sub. The challenge was audio synchronization between both systems which was finally achieved by adjusting the TV audio output delay in conjunction with the same process on the Vizio 5.1.2 audio delay setting. When i say this final configuration sounds incredible, it is no joke. My whole living room literally shakes from the sound! The Atmos encoded opening scene from MadMax is so immersive you actually feel like you're about to get run over by the bandits. Anyhoo - great vid and great information here! 👍

Thinking of doing something similar. I have a Bose 900 system with two 500 subs and 700 rears. I just got a projector and need to send the earc signal from the projector to the projector. The locations are very far from each other and too far for an hdmi cable. As such, I picked up a earc over ethernet adapter which allows me to send the signal accross the room with nothing more than an ethernet cable. The device has a transmitter and receiver box which are connected via the ethernet cable. From there, I can connect the earc of my projector to the device using a very short high speed hdmi cable. The other side also uses a short high speed hdmi cable to connect to the sound bar. The device has the added benefit of being able to extract the audio(including Atmos). I plan to use that to send sound via spdif to my pro-logic AV receiver, and use the right and left channels to add my older Bose 600 book shelf speakers to the setup. I could also add rear channels to the receiver. The idea is to just add a little more pop to the fullness of the listening experience. I could later get an atmos AV receiver and add more speakers to the height channel but just thought I'd give my older existing equipment a shot. Your post makes me think this may be a good option. I just wasn't too sure how Atmos would sound with the older Prologic left/right channel speakers or if they would clash or echo. Thoughts?

Thank you. I’m a beginner to home theater systems etc.. Back in November I purchased a Sony STR-DH590 AV receiver as well as a LG 3.1.2 sound bar with Dolby Atmos. After watching your video, I now know that I won’t be needing the receiver for my home theater. Instead I bought the LG SPK8-S 2.0 rear speaker kit. Unfortunately I can not return the receiver. So I guess I can hook up the AV receiver to the TV in my living room or bedroom. I was going to use the receiver for its HDMI inputs for my home theater since my projector only has one hdmi port, but I just purchased a Phillips HDMI switch to plug into projector allowing connection to up to 4 additional hdmi devices. Had I watched your video sooner it would have saved me a couple of hundred dollars. Great video.

Your third scenario is exactly what I'm going to be trying. I currently have a 5.2 setup with a receiver and a projector. I have 4 HDMI devices, including PS5 and Xbox X. I'm thinking about buying the new Hisense Laser projector, and a center channel or even a soundbar won't fit well between the short throw projector and the screen. So, I'm thinking about the new Sony HT-A9 4.1 and a sub, which is getting great reviews. The problem is, projectors have limited HDMI's, so I'm thinking of using the receiver as a high-quality HDMI switch, and use the HDMI out from the receiver that would go to the projector, to go to the Sony control box HDMI in, then HDMI out to the projector - what I don't know, is if the HDMI output from the receiver is sending everything I would want, like high res audio, dts, and other data that the sound system would need. Unfortunately, I cannot find a 4k 120hz HDMI 2.2 switch, which would be the best solution

Thanks for this video. In some countries like Japan where I live, there are thousands of used active soundbars, but very few reasonably priced and/or suitably sized passive LCR speakers to connect to a receiver. The temptation then becomes to use a soundbar as one, the speakers are there inside the enclosure (!), but unfortunately soundbars do not include three channels of inputs. Presumably circuitry could be removed from a used soundbar and connections added to make it into an LCR, but it would be nice to know which soundbars work well before attempting this. Some older HT systems have hdmi inputs and amp built into the subwoofer, with the soundbar as a passive speaker (like the sony ht tc100) but that one uses a 9 pin connector, so some hacking would still be required to connect regular speaker cables from the receiver.

There is one other scenario which I'm facing right now. Trying to get the AM/FM radio from an old Pioneer receiver (SX-2700) to come out on the soundbar where the soundbar is already connected to the TV via TOSLINK while the cable box and Blu-Ray player is connected to the TV via HDMI. I'm aiming for the minimized look. The only viable solution ( to me ) that I can think of is via the receiver's TRS jack for the headphones but it looks so messy. Another way (perhaps too dangerous for the soundbar) is to jury-rig a 3.5mm cable to connect to the receivers "Spring Clip" speaker connectors and plug the 3.5mm jack into the soundbar. The worry is that I could damage the soundbar should someone accidentally crank up the volume on the receiver.

Here's my scenario. I have a nice receiver and 5.1 setup; however, I move fairly often to new apartments and am tired of always having to fix the holes in the wall and wiring speakers around the room. Also I'm tired of looking at exposed wires as it's not easy to hide in a removable manner for apartment life. So I was thinking about getting a soundbar to replace my 5.1 system ( I understand the sound quality will not be as good) for the ease of it. The problem with this is that I have multiple sources and only one input on the tv that can accept 4k video and none of the soundbars I've seen accept multiple hdmi inputs. The receiver solves this by having passthrough of 4k video through all of its hdmi ports. What would you suggest to run a soundbar with multiple 4k hdmi sources? Thanks in advance!

I would definitely go with a Soundbar that has multiple HDMI inputs on it. This would make your life a lot easier. If you have a decent budget, I'd suggest the Nakamichi Shockwafe Pro 7.1.4 soundbar. It has 3 HDMI inputs and supports 4K pass-through. There are also many other cheaper soundbars that have multiple HDMI inputs and supports 4K pass-through, but I personally have the Shockwave Pro and think it's a solid unit. I will be posting a review of it soon if you're interested!

Hello, Jonah. My reason for wanting to connect a soundbar to an AV receiver is that I am planning on upgrading my TV to a bigger set (52 to a 65 inch). I have a Onkyo AV 5.1 receiver with all the speakers: center, left, right, back left, back right, subwoofer. The setup I have is the TV is set into the corner of the room, and the left and right speakers are on stands beside the TV. When I get the bigger TV, there will be no room for left/right speakers. There will be room for the center speaker, and by investing a soundbar, I would be replacing the left/right and center speakers. So you are saying that this configuration is not something you recommend?

i'm in this situation and my reason for wanting to do that is because i have multiple inputs like my apple tv and dvd player and chromecast google tv. i have a great soundbar the klipsch cinema 600 (only 1 hdmi arc port) and i'm using the epson tw5820 projector (only 1 hdmi input) as well as a sony bravia tv and i'm using a yamaha receiver that has only 1 hdmi out. All this means is i have a very complicated setup. I enjoy the quality of the soundbar and dont want to ditch it but theres really no way to connect everything i have properly without a receiver. That means my receiver is really like a glorified hdmi switch. The hdmi output is to my projector and i strip the hdmi audio from that to connect to the soundbar. Convoluted i know but i really dunno another way other than getting a expensive receiver that has more than 1 hdmi out.

Howdy Jonah I fall into the category of the final reason you mention in the video (at 4:17). My scenario is that my TV wont pass through Dolby Atmos, and I am looking to upgrade to a Atmos capable 5.1.4 setup (46in soundbar with wireless sub/rear speakers). If i did this without a receiver, I could only pass 1 device through as Atmos, and that would be directly through the Soundbar HDMI In. What I was imagining is Xbox/PS4/Switch/NVIDIA Shield >> AVR >> SoundBar HDMI IN >> TV HMDI ARC channel (although I may not even need to use ARC i think since I don't plan on utilizing any Apps from the TV). Does this sound like it would work? I am effectively using the AVR as HDMI switch that supports Atmos and can allow me in the future to upgrade to a non A.I.O. soundbar setup.

Here is how you can turn your soundbar, av reciever into surround rears or dolby atmos by using hdmi splitter. Take one end of spliter and connect it to tv as in and 2 outs a1 - one av reciever where you will only turn rears and dolby height channels and hdmi a2 with soundbar. Timber matching will depend upon model to model but in theory you can turn your soundbar into a dedicated dolbt atmos set up.

Here’s my scenario: we had used the sound bar (located behind recliners we sit at) as a “nighttime” speaker so the TV speakers weren’t throwing sound down the hall or adjoining rooms. Just got an Onkyo NR6050 and want to still do the same. I don’t see where this type of setup is mentioned in their manual, or any how-to video I’ve seen so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For me, want to hook up the sound bar to the Left, Right and Center of the stereo because want to listen to other sources beside the TV (music). No space to place left right speakers. But seems like I need a passive sound bar with speaker wire inputs. Stereo does not have pre-outputs.

My question is, I want a receiver for the AM FM options, use my Blu-ray player for CDs and connect them and TV to a Dolby Atmos sound bar. I don't want a home stereo to blow out my windows, just decent sound. Is it possible to get a receiver without an amplifier? I do have a sound bar w/subwoofer that does a decent job for what it is.

My Samsung soundbar only has an hdmi arc, hdmi, and optical. Nobody will explain how to hook up a soundbar to the receiver via hdmi arc or regular hdmi. I get it’s not what everyone would normally do but is it possible?? Also, is it possible to have all your speakers hooked up to your receiver the normal way, plus your soundbar with a rear speaker kit playing together while all hooked up to the receiver? Obviously, I am new to this but would just like a definitive answer. Again, I get it’s not the “normal” way of doing things.

Thanks for posting the video. I have a Dolby Atmos sound bar that I want to use with my projector, but the projector only has ARC support, not eARC. However, I do have a Dolby Atmos AV receiver, but I don’t want to run speaker wires this time and I want to use the sound bar instead. Do you have a suggestion so I can utilize the AV receiver instead of purchasing an expensive Arcana dongle?

The reason I want to connect my Bose Solo 5 to a receiver is, I'm using a home theatre projector as my video component. I have the receiver so that I can connect a Roku box and occasionally a BlueRay player or game system. The Bose Solo 5 does not have an HDMI option, only Aux, Optical and Coaxial connections. The receiver has an optical connection but of course, the sound bar can't process that signal. Is there a way to make it work?

I subscribed. I had a sony soundbar that just 1 day no power on. Wouldn't come on and it had a subwoofer. Well I bought another sony sounbar without subwoofer. Now can I take parts out of broke soundbar that makes it connect to subwoofer and install that piece in my new soundbar. Is it called transmitter module or how can I connect soundbar to my old phillips home theater that has great sound and subwoofer. It has not hdmi or optical inputs. My soundbar has no rca I puts or outputs. So what do I do. This is really bothering me. I only use my soundbar to bluetooth with my phone for music. I tried downloading a equalizer app to give my soundbar more bass and that didn't work. You have no way of adjusting the treble or bass on this soundbar. It's a sony sa-s100f soundbar. Can't believe you can't even adjust bass or treble on the new soundbar. Cause everyone has different taste. I am 60 years young and I love the bass. Please help me Sir. Desperate in Georgia

HiJonah, thanks for your explanation. But what if I want to connect an LCD projector instead of TV. in this case all (hdmi) sources go into the AV receiver, then HDMI output for VIDEO to LCD projector (which obviously does not have ARC or optical out) and Optical output for AUDIO directly into soundbar. Can you tell the receiver (Denon AVR-1910) to split Audio and Video output over two different connectors or does it output simultaneously. Thanks very much for your response. Kind regards Mark

Hmm .. my use case is different. For casual TV watching, I want the sound to go to the soundbar. For movies, where sounds is of the essence, I want the sound routed to my surround processor and full featured 7.1.4 setup. I think this is a valid usecase that is not limited to "beginners". What is your take on this? I am currently trying to connect the dots myself :-/

Hello, I have a Marantz NR1200 2 x 75 Watts A/V Stereo Receiver w/HDMI and want to connect it to a Paradigm Shift Soundtrack Soundbar and Sub-woofer System. The Marantz received has 2.1 capability (left, right and sub-woofer). The Paradigm system is also a 2.1 channel set-up configuration (no center channel built-in to the soundbar). Is this possible and if so how would I connect it? My understanding is that the soundbar has a built-in amplifier as well as the sub-woofer, so will this conflict with the receiver amplification? I would like the soundbar and sub-woofer to basically be my speaker system for television, DVD / Blu-Ray player and Sirius XM Radio. Otherwise, I was going to use 2 Paradigm Atoms with a PDR-10 sub-woofer. The soundbar speaker and sub-woofer would take up less space, so that's why I am wondering if this would work as an option, since the area where this will be used has to be compact. What do you recommend?

So you can't run a soundbar through a receiver instead of separate speakers. So if I wanted to run a system without earc ..7.2.4 shockwafe through a denon x4700h 11.2 channel....that's not good? Well I'm not running to the tv because it's not earc and most TV's don't pass through dts x and have tons of earc problems. Can you give some clarification on this? As I'm trying to figure out which way to go. The best bet would probably be to wait for Nakamichi to include earc in their next model, possibly, because for the price...most soundbar systems just don't compare.

Unfortunately, it's very unlikely that you can use those surround speakers with your current soundbar. My suggestion is to look for a passive 3 channel soundbar and a good audio/video receiver. Or 3 speakers for the front of the room and a good a/v receiver. Hope this helps!

Hey Donald, I’d say that this setup is extremely unlikely to work like this. It’s possible that this connection setup might work, but the 2.1 channel soundbar would theoretically play all of the audio, not just the center channel. Again, there’s no telling weather this setup will actually work in the first place. Hope this makes sense!

I wanted to see about getting a sound receiver to act as a quality hdmi switch because my kids keep losing the hdmi switch remote, and lets be frank, hdmi switching stinks unless if it is connected directly to the tv generally. I heard receivers can be just as good with the quality of detection. I have an xbox x, ps5, ps4 (probably not needed anymore), nintendo switch, steam deck, and the sound bar. At times I'll also have a raspberry pi or my laptop plugged in for other reasons. Would that be a good way to go with being able to connect all these difference devices?
