Still I use H265 to watch my video's on my iMac. Almost half the size of H264!

Why should KZbin use H265? for one thing, a lot of KZbin is watched through BD players, which do not support H265 and apparently will not for at least a couple of years or so. H265 may be the coming thing, etc, but it has not arrived. It is a great pain in the ass to need a file which is only in H265 when you can only play H264 only on your computer, (VLC) and not your home system. Not everyone can replace all their equipment every time something new comes out to make more money for business.

Handbrake has the ablity to convert H.265 to H.264 video. But it has some limits: - Handbrake always outputs poor video quality. - It takes quite a long time to load source video and convert video. - It sometimes crashes in the middle before finishing the conversion process. - Besides, Handbrake is not updated often and lacks technical support. - The interface and settings of Handbrake are complex and it is not suitable for new beginners. In this case, you can try a more advanced H.265 encoder like DumboFab video converter to finish the job.

@jhellier8 жыл бұрын
+Gary Macrae Are you serious? And how do you know this?
@BuffaloBetties8 жыл бұрын
I find the file size of the original file does not influence the conversion time much, because ordinary mpg is a pretty wasteful inefficient format. It's how many frames it has to convert, & the resolution of each of the original frames & the converted frames that will determine conversion times the most. It also depends on if there's a lot of busy or action scenes in the video. Basically, any frame(s) that works your processors more will take more time. Standard ordinary MPG can be quite a bandwidth & space hog. When you think about standard mpg like mpg/VOB files on a standard DVD, it will hold only about 2 hours of 480-550p poor quality video on a DVD. But in h264 mp4 V2, you can get a 720p, 2 hour movie to look pretty good at on 600-900mb of space. 60fps will take twice as long to convert than 30fps. The coverter will have to read, convert, every frame. Reading a 1080p frame to convert will take a CPU a lot longer than a 720p frame. Converting large or busy frames will take longer. Converting a frame to 1080p will take longer to process, covert, & write per frame than converting to 720p frames. And those busy scenes... A video of a couple people just sitting in a room or at a desk talking will take less time to convert, use less bandwidth & space, than a busy action movie, or nature scenes with lots of fine detail in them. You may be able to convert a quite average 2 hour movie down to 480-550p h264p mp4 V2, that looks quite well in minutes. But that high-action sci-fi or wilderness adventure may take hours to convert to 1080p on an ordinary PC, & converter. Assuming ordinary DVD mpg is about 4gb for 2 hours of video, & that it can be converted to h264 mp4 on an ordinary PC, in about a half an hour, means it would take about 16 hours to convert your DVD quality 128gb mpg/VOB video. But there are too many variables to know for sure. It could be much less or much more. Assume it will take 2-5 times longer to convert to h265 though because it's so resource hungry. I'd wait at least a year or 2 more for them to make h265 more efficient & less buggy. The pros of using h265 don't outweigh the cons of using it yet. The gains in file size & bandwidth saving is not that significant without losing some quality of the video. With some tweaking of h264 & your converter, you can accomplish those same size savings & quality losses already without switching to h265. Just converting a 30fps movie to 24fps may reduce your file size just as much. Most films were originally in 24fps, & your eyes can't see anything faster than 24fps, so by going to 24fps, you're probably just turning it back to the original. A 24fps conversion will convert faster than a 30-60fps conversion, because it has to process less frames. People will say they're seeing a significant improvement in smooth motions at frame rates higher than 24fps, but that's just not scientifically possible. What's happening is some hardware, & software will drop frames to keep up during playback, especially on busy, fast, or complex scenes. So if it's running at 60-120fps, they just don't notice poor motion if a few frames are dropped. Where at 24fps, any more than a couple FPS dropped is very noticeable. If absolutely no frames are dropped, most people will see smooth motion even at 20fps. But at 20fps, even 1 fps dropped will be noticed. So even 20fps is good as long as you're not running it on basic popular crappy hardware & software. And lets not forget your conversion software, plus the hardware it's running on. The conversion itself may have even dropped frames. So with more FPS, the dropped frames are either not noticed, or not noticed much.

Hmmm. 3 minute video in about 3 minutes? That's bad. I use Handbrake or avidemux. They usually convert 90 minute, 1080p h265, to 720p h264 video in about 40-50 minutes on my machine perfectly. I'm using a 2.9ghz dual core with 4gb on RAM with no graphics card (on-board intel graphics only), with Windows 7 (PC built in 2009). Converts 720-1080p H264 to other formats even faster. 10-30 minutes for a 90-120 minute movie. The PC plays & edits H265 fine, but I need to convert them down to H264 to play them on other devices or underpowered devices. H265 is very CPU & resource hungry. I guess their developers expect everyone to just run out & drop $1500 on a new machine. They lied about the file size advantage. The best I could shave off file size without losing much quality was around 20%. Hardly worth it for how resource hungry it is, & lack of smooth playback except on the most robust newest machines. I can shave that much off, by just using a slighly lower frame rate, reduce the resolution so little that nobody would notice, or go to a least a lower kbs for the audio. You can also edit out the dull or useless parts a little to gain 20% less in file size. H265 is also buggy, & not ready for prime time. I'd wait a couple more years for a better final version. 20% less file size is not a big deal, & doesn't help bandwidth consumption much compared to all the headaches it causes. I'm seeing people cutting file sizes in half with H265 but with cosiderable quality loss. I can already cut the size by 50% with H264 if I don't mind losing some quality.

Thom Stark : Conversion & playback is strictly a CPU & GPU intensive process... if the converter supports the GPU & vice versa. Some RAM will be needed for loading the software, running it, & buffering too, but not much. You just need a fast processor, & at least a dual-core processor helps. Most, but not all converters & players will support & benefit from a fast dual core. Tests indicate no further noticeable improvements by moving up to 4 or more cores though. That's because most converters & players are optimized to do best on 2 cores. An SSD will make absolutely no difference in the conversion or playback. It will start & load the program faster, but after that the CPU & RAM is running the program not the hard drive. If your SSD or regular drive is running like crazy during a conversion of playback, you're way to short on RAM (need at least 2gb), or you're using programs & files infected with malware, bloatware. The hard drive mostly is just used to read the source video, & write the converted video, not to do the conversion. Since even an old slow 4200rpm mechanical drive can read & write faster than any conversion program can covert the material, the drive makes absolutely no difference in the process. Granted, if your using a class 4 or less slow flash thumb drive or SD card for your source & converted material it will slow down the conversion. But the conversion speed will not be related to a normal hard drive vs SSD. The SSD will boot the computer faster, load/start the program faster, read & write faster, but will not affect the speed of a program itself or the coversion running on a clean un-infected computer with enough RAM. Don't overload too much RAM in it either. It can hurt rather than help. That extra RAM draws a lot of extra power. Every bit of extra power you draw causes the voltage & current to drop slightly from your power supply. If the supply starts to get warm, it will throttle back its power even more. With less voltage & current, your CPU, GPU, & RAM will run slower. Especially if you're adding much more RAM than you'd normally ever need, you will definitely slow it down, as all it really does is draw more power slowing everything else down while it's just sitting there not getting used. Look at how much RAM you're using on your most intense project or surfing. Don't get more than twice that much, more won't help whatsoever, & just make thing worse. If you're going through a lot of RAM by leaving a couple dozen windows or tabs open on your browser while surfing, the solution is to take a break to close some of those windows & tabs, not load the machine up with more RAM. If your SSD is working hard during a conversion, something is wrong, & you'll wear it out prematurely. I have 2 identical model 2.9ghz dual core PCs with identical software in them. But one has a nice new fast SSD in it with 8gb of RAM, & the other has an 8 year old 7200 WD mechanical drive with 4GB of RAM. Converting identical video files using identical Handbrake software, on both of them, the one with 4GB converts a few minutes faster. Even though the SSD drew less power, twice as much RAM in the machine drew more leaving less power available for the RAM I actually need, the CPU, & GPU. I was going to upgrade both the same way, but after the tests, I decided to leave the second one as it is. Also beware you don't mix RAM. Even identical specs on RAM from different manufacturers will have slight differences that can dramatically affect their performance & speed. Always install a matched set of good RAM from the same manufacturer to keep it quick, & prevent your hard drive running more than it should. Beware of matched sets from odd brands. There may be too much differences between even match sets of odd brands to perform well. Those odd brands may not be even from the same factory or country or may be used (torn out of old computers). They just put their sticker/brand on them. It's just not technically possible to convert a 2 hour 720-1080p h265 video to another format or to h264 in 7 minutes in the same resolution. If you can that, Intel, AMD, NASA, & CERN could use somebody like you to design new chips, mobos, & software. You MAY be able to convert 720p h264 to 240-360p video in 5-8 minutes. But NOT to 720-1080p resolution from H265 video. Higher resolutions will take more time, & processing/converting H265 is very intense.

Hello. I have a same problems to convert NX1 files to H.265 for import to Premiere Pro CC 2015 (H.265 supported version) in Windows 7. My PC is Xeon 5440 (2 CPU), GeForce 470 videocard, 16Gb memory. My solution of this problem is to convert Pavtube 4.8.6. Converter. Its easy to convert: Common Video - H.265 Video (HEVC), Full HD output, bitrate 20-25 Mbts.

Yes, but you might also mention that Pavtube is NOT FREE, it has two version that cost $35 and $65. Remember this video says "How to Convert ..., ... Easily and Free".
