I recently did a small chicken with a panel cooker (The Cookit) in about 3 hours here in the UK. But I use a meat thermometer to make sure it gets cooked right through (90 deg. C or 195 deg. F) in the thickest parts. Try vegetables in a solar oven too - they cook without water so the flavours are really intense!

cool..I made one a little more complicated and was able to crank it up to 330 and maintain that temp. Now....I did this in southern California and its the people in the sunnier areas that benefit the most from this method of cooking. Instead of turning on the oven to bake a few muffins or whatever...it also makes the air conditioning kick in more. Its an all round saving...so long as ya close the door to let the air conditioning out. Mine was big and could cook a turkey and like you said...no matter what was being cooked...the meat fell off the bones. Another trick I use is I jump in the shower with my cloths on then sit outside in the shade on the hot sunny days. I turned the air conditioner off.

LOL at the shower procedure. I'm not that dedicated! What kind of design did you use for your solar oven. Panel? Parabolic? Box? If it was a box, how many reflectors? It would be cool to get 330 out of an oven, especially if it was portable enough to take camping.

Well...first of all it was a wood box type with a true mirror and top cover. If you ever try to make a better one..or even smaller than the one I made...here are some tips. I painted the inside of the box black and that worked a little but soon as I lined it with tin foil...that cranked it up a notch. I put a small raised grill on the bottom and painted a floor tile black to rest on top of that. Then I used a cast iron pot also painted with high heat black. I had a heat loss problem at the top where the hinges are for the cover and mirror so I rand a thick bead of silicone along the top rail of the box. That did the trick. I really enjoyed building it. The initial cost wasnt too bad for me because I already had the mirror and the cast iron pot. Man...those cast iron pots can be expensive. The back yard ran east to west so after the fog burnt off in the morning...pure sun. I couldnt believe the temp myself with it being so big. I guess it just goes to show...it doesnt matter the size. Then I made a 2x4 platfom on wheels to raise it up to waist height. I might try to do a smaller one next time.

I think you can paint the outside of a regular pot black if you can't find a black pot. Just use the painted pot for this purpose and not for stove cooking.

Good tip. I have actually done that. I use spray paint that is designed to be used on grills. It is supposedly "non-toxic when dry", although I don't know if that is actually different that other paint or if it's just a way to sell more paint.
