Gday. Thanks for dropping in from South Africa. It’s great my videos are being viewed so far away. Roast lamb in the camp oven would be my favourite meal to make. Do you use your pot in the same way on the fire? Thanks for your feedback. Cheers Tim
@tommiesteyn3520 Жыл бұрын
@@timbates4wdadventures Hi Tim yes I do. The biggest differences I can think of is the lid does not have as much space for coals as a camp oven, the pot bottom is roundish and not flat so you have to keep in mind that all the liquid is concentrated in the bottom. (a small grid can be used if you want to keep your roast out of the sauce) Another difference is that managing coals under the pot is somewhat different. If I want to up the heat a little bit I add a few coals with a pair of thongs or just move some coals away to reduce the heat. Cheers Tom
@timbates4wdadventures Жыл бұрын
@@tommiesteyn3520 Gday Tom Sounds like an interesting way of cooking mate. I do use a trivet in the bottom of my camp oven, that works well to stop the meal burning and helps to get heat flow under what’s being cooked. Thanks a lot for replying back about how you use your pot. Cheers Tim

Hi would anybody be able to tell me what I can place the coals in underneath the pot. I am cooking in my garden so do not want the coals on my lawn ( have young children.) I am gonna purchase a pot & tripod. I know it's seems a bit stupid asking this question but I live in England & nobody I know cooks This way. Thank you.
@timbates4wdadventures Жыл бұрын
Gday You’d probably need some kind of metal drum that you could put the coals in and the put the tripod over the top and hang you pot from that. Hope that helps some what. Thanks for dropping in from England. Cheers Tim

If you don’t have any sand to throw your pumpkin into, how much sand and dirt should you add- just a pinch of sand and dirt? Any dead grass or insects? Kidding aside, a nice video with good information

Its cooked through, but is wet on the bottom, where it simmered in its own juices. While that still tastes great! You have to raise that bird off the bottom of the over to keep the skin dry and crispy. Either use a few trivets or a lot of vegetables (which roast perfectly in the chicken broth!) To elevate to chicken. But the KEY is to vent the lid, a bit, and let out that moisture, towards the end of the cook time. That crispens the skin up, but doesn't dry out the chicken meat! Use a green stick, chop stick, skewer, something to vent the lid.

You will never have to worry about Vampires using all that delicious garlic . I love Dutch oven cooking and am purchasing my first Petromax, I am so undecided. The question is do I get a ft 3 or 4.5 ?

Rubbing some salt on that chook would go a long way too. Actually I did one the other night rubbed with a little vinegar first as well, didn't have any lemons.

oil the outside of your oven
@timbates4wdadventures4 жыл бұрын
G'day John, Why mate? Cheers Tim.
@johnpalmer68224 жыл бұрын
In my area the rust on the outside would be even greater if we didn’t season the outside also. I guess I was thought that in Boy Scouts as a lad. So I just do it. Same with my cast iron skillets. Wash with hot water scrape out stuck on bits with wooden tools or stick. Then oil or lard rub it in till you can’t remove anymore oil back off, while pan/pot is still warm from the hot water. Inside and out. Place paper towel between lid and pot to allow some air to circulate. Then store.

Tim Bates 4wd Adventures not near an ocean. In rust belt of Illinois. We get high humidity in our area. In summer we may have 90* f+ with 95% humidity. Car frames don’t last long if not washed regularly from salt used on our roads in winter.
