@@timbates4wdadventures Hi Tim yes I do. The biggest differences I can think of is the lid does not have as much space for coals as a camp oven, the pot bottom is roundish and not flat so you have to keep in mind that all the liquid is concentrated in the bottom. (a small grid can be used if you want to keep your roast out of the sauce) Another difference is that managing coals under the pot is somewhat different. If I want to up the heat a little bit I add a few coals with a pair of thongs or just move some coals away to reduce the heat. Cheers Tom

@timbates4wdadventures Жыл бұрын
@@tommiesteyn3520 Gday Tom Sounds like an interesting way of cooking mate. I do use a trivet in the bottom of my camp oven, that works well to stop the meal burning and helps to get heat flow under what’s being cooked. Thanks a lot for replying back about how you use your pot. Cheers Tim

love your video. im usually camping with my big canvas tipi with a wood stove up here in Sweden. got a new cast iron pot this christmas. i have a grate that i put inside the pot, that lifts 1/3 of the pot height from the bottom. but since i will be using the pot inside the tent, and i always have my tentmat connected. i dont want to be messing around with putting coals ontop of the pot since my pot dosnt have a rim on the lid...is it possible to get a good result from just having heat underneath?

Gday mate, Thanks for dropping in from Sweden. I also use what we call a trivet in the bottom of my camp oven. It does help to keep what you’re cooking off the bottom and not burning it. Great cooking young felah,l must get a bigger camp oven to have a crack at cooking a healthy meal like that. I cheat and put my small camp oven in my normal gas oven,it helps keep the inside of my normal oven clean. Coals are the best for camp ovens but over the years l have seen people put their camp oven onto their gas cookers and it works fine as long as you have a trivet.😁😉

Its cooked through, but is wet on the bottom, where it simmered in its own juices. While that still tastes great! You have to raise that bird off the bottom of the over to keep the skin dry and crispy. Either use a few trivets or a lot of vegetables (which roast perfectly in the chicken broth!) To elevate to chicken. But the KEY is to vent the lid, a bit, and let out that moisture, towards the end of the cook time. That crispens the skin up, but doesn't dry out the chicken meat! Use a green stick, chop stick, skewer, something to vent the lid.

In my area the rust on the outside would be even greater if we didn’t season the outside also. I guess I was thought that in Boy Scouts as a lad. So I just do it. Same with my cast iron skillets. Wash with hot water scrape out stuck on bits with wooden tools or stick. Then oil or lard rub it in till you can’t remove anymore oil back off, while pan/pot is still warm from the hot water. Inside and out. Place paper towel between lid and pot to allow some air to circulate. Then store.
