This is crazy to watch this because this is the way we always cooked potatoes before microwaves. We'd rub them with oil and roll them in salt, bake for an hour and they would come out fluffy and delicious. Then, cut them, add lots of butter and sour cream. Delicious! I'm about to put 2 in the oven to have with some grilled ribeyes and a salad😋🥔

@@AyyJay. Oh, there's nothing 'wrong' with it. When microwaves came along, people started nuking them. The thing with microwaving is that it steams the potato, making it soft and mealy, while baking them at around 400 in the oven, (especially if you coat with the some oil and salt), will make the skin crispy and the potato is very light and fluffy. If the taste doesn't matter, then it doesn't matter!☺Oh, and I've never microwaved a steak!

I thought that was wrong too. I've always use oil to make the skin crispy. I also wrap mine in foil, which may or may not make it crispy. Can't remember. I just bake them like I was taught at a restaurant. We didn't use oil, but we did wrap them in foil so they don't become too dehydrate. There is no wrong way, just preference, based on how one likes it. We also, didn't poke holes into the potatoes as that would lose more moisture; however, some like it that way too. If anyone wants a soft skin potato, do not oil it, and wrap it tight in foil. If you want a dry dehydrated potato, do not foil wrap it and don't oil it. If you want a crispier skin, use oil with foil wrap or without foil wrap, it's up to you how you like it hydrated or dehydrated. If you really want it dehydrated, poke many holes, no oil, no foil wrap.

I tried this and the middle is still hard and I don't know what I did wrong. I'm mostly using this method because the microwave that is with the apartment immediately powers off the second I try to put something in there and after the 4th time of unplugging,resetting the outlet then plugging it back in only to shut off again the second I start it back up was the last straw

@@wolfjay1343 You are kidding me with this. poking holes does not allow heat in but to escape. Slow cooking a potato will penetrate the skin slowly. It is unneccesary to poke the holes. In a Microwave sure because you are fast cooking the potato and need to allow the heat to escape but slow cooking you want to keep any heat from escaping over time and this allows a more uniform cooking.

I like them rock hard. Heres a great tip, saw a chef do. When cooked, wrap in a tea towel, then squash them all over, try not to break the skin. Then when you cut through them they are broken up inside. Neat trick eh?
