Oh my gosh, I did it! Thank you, Doug, for the great video. I am a 65 year old, very unmechanical woman and I successfully flipped the cylinder. I purchased the tool as you suggested. I kept referring back to your video for each step, watching closely. The lock was so annoying being upside down, I couldn't stand it any longer. Thank you for taking the time to post this video. Happy Holidays! :)

You are very, very, very considerate , benevolent , and I don’t know what other words describe how helpful and important this video is. Thank you 1 million times for making and posting this video. Stupid screwdrivers !!! I think Kwikset should just make a right and a left opening door handle lock so you don’t even have to do this. I like how Kwikset says in their installation instructions how it’s “ok” to install upside down. Not! It’s awkward, or counterintuitive or whatever you want to call it to have it , or unlock , or use it upside down. I’d rather just buy a right hand or left hand lock. Thank you so very much!!! And , I hit subscribe to show my appreciation , and , hopefully , help you out!!!

Thanks David, I appreciate the sub! I agree, Kwikset could do a better job of informing customers of the details on this. I’ve since been told by a locksmith that you shorten the life of the lockset by mounting upside down as trash can fall into the mechanism. Thanks again!

Thank you SO much! It was so easy; took me less than 7 minutes (but I had watched the video and “practiced” while waiting for the tool to arrive). What I really loved about your video is that it was very straight-forward. No excessive talking, just plain and simple “this is how it’s done”. Thanks again. I subscribed.

Thanks for the video. Helped me flip my key hole right side up. But it was confusing when you said compress the spring to get the center rod out. I eventually figured out you needed to push the spring forward when looking down at it and that there was a metal tab you could push on to make that easier. After that it was a breeze.

After 4:42, you jumped directly from the center cylinder popping out and putting it back in. Could you tell us when and how should we put the center rod back?
@DougForce
@DougForce 3 жыл бұрын
@Zehua Zhou Hi, The center rod of the puller just turns against the nut on the pipe, pulling the ferrule off the pipe. I was showing a demo of the process on the copper pipe ending at 4:42 and then repeating the process on the cpvc pipe in the wall. After you screw the puller into the nut, turn the center rod of the puller till the ferrule pops off. Does that help?

Awesome explanation I am impatient so no special tool for me. However the explanation got me through using precision screw drivers so I can get these locks for our new house set up with the hey holes correct. (Some locks probably not the Kwikset ones are basically identical they just have a tab on the back side of the spring you can push instead of just pushing the spring forward like the Atlas 1738002)

I've been fighting this upside down lock BS my whole life, I just never cared that much as I can handle upside down keys. But, now that I'm paying 75$ for a lock set, they ought to be orientated correctly. What bothers me is I figured it would come in the instructions and it does not. Thanks for this easy to understand video; I just wish you had shown the measurements of that tool as I have tons of steel and a milling machine to fine tune it, I'd just make my own tool...

That is the annoying part-that Kwikset just says "It's ok" and doesn't mention anything about fixing it! Also annoying that this tool only costs 38 cents but you can't find it for that! You can buy it online cheap, but after shipping it's back to 8-10 dollars!! Home Depot sells it in a kit, for $11, if you're THAT GUY! Buy the kit, use it and return it- if you only need to use it once.

Great video. I used this information to correct my quickset lock however mine was the type with a handle instead of a knob and the procedure is a little bit different. You remove the handle with the included Allen wrench in the cylinder is 3/4 of the way visible. Then there is a retaining clip that you can see in a small slot that can be removed with a small pick to allow you to remove the cylinder and turn it upside down. Just knowing that the cylinder needed to be removed was half the battle thanks for that. If you get your hands on the other style maybe you can do a video on that as well.

1st time house renter (the kids, my old lady and I always lived in apartments and this was never an issue) but when we moved into our house I noticed that after the owners "handy men" were done remodeling the house after last tenant. All of my exterior doors had the same brand door handle/locks but a different model as in the video. Nonetheless when I asked about the key holes being upside down they told me this was the proper way it was supposed to be installed AND as a matter of fact, and I quote: "all key holes should be like that, the rest are installed wrong". I shit you not, now I'm not a home builder but in my 33 years I've changed enough door locks to know this guy was a fucking idiot... So after a quick search on YT, I found this video and the 1st thing that I said was "I fucking knew it" I knew I wasn't wrong and this guy was an idiot. Lol thanks for uploading this video.

@chris martin The tool is not always needed or helpful, but I’ve struggled with stuck ferrules many times. So I was excited to find a tool than can help make removal easier in many cases. Sometimes the ferrules come off easily by hand, sometimes nothing works. The more options I have in the toolbox, the more chances I have for a successful job. Plus I love tools! 😀

Very helpful, thank you! Will flipping the cylinder around change the orientation of locking/unlocking to counterclockwise vs clockwise? So, if it’s upside down and unlocks with a key clockwise, will switching it to right side-up bring it to unlock counterclockwise? Thanks!
@DougForce
@DougForce 4 жыл бұрын
@SG Man that’s a brain teaser! Lol - I “think” flipping the cylinder will not change the orientation of locking and unlocking since the mechanism of the latch is not changing - just the key cylinder is rotating. But I could be wrong! Lol I have an extra door lock available-I’ll try that next time I’m at the property and report back on how accurate my guess was!

@@DougForce yeah, the keyways are in the correct orientation. The problem is that the knob's lock turns the wrong way. It's similar to that deadbolt in the video that you suggested to someone else. My deadbolt handle turns the correct way (toward the door frame), but the doorknob piece turns away from the frame. Maybe I can take apart the knob and reverse the mechanism like the guy did to the deadbolt.

@Bill Anderson Sorry to hear about the frustration! The spring should be all that is holding the center piece if the tab is lined up over the hole - maybe some grime and gunk is holding it in place. Sleep on it and try again fresh - might try a little graphite lubricant to loosen it up if it seems stiff. The first time I removed mine it was tight but after that it disassembled easily. The one problem that no one ever mentions when they flip the key cylinder 180 degrees is that the inside knob lock/unlock mechanism is reversed from clockwise to lock and counterclockwise to unlock. It's always going to be a half-win situation.
@DougForce
@DougForce Жыл бұрын
@emmel07 In this case, since the door handle is on the left facing from inside it makes more sense to turn the mechanism counterclockwise to lock as you are turning towards the wall where the latch is. Same for clockwise to unlock as you are sliding the lock out of the wall and into the door. If that was reversed it would be awkward i think. But if the door handle was on the right facing from inside then I see your point exactly! I guess it depends on which side the handle is located.

@DougForce
@DougForce 3 жыл бұрын
@garn1177 Its not really wrong as door knobs can be right hand or left hand mounted. I think they just sell them in the most common orientation and for the doors setup the other way it ends up upside down like mine did. But the knob can be adjusted as I did, so it will work correctly for every door with adjustment. Kwikset will also send you the tool for free if you call, I’ve been told by other commenters.

@DougForce
@DougForce 3 жыл бұрын
@garn1177 Yeah, if you think about it, you have to turn the entire assembly upside down to mount on the other side of the door - so that puts the key upside down in one of those two configurations. I think they should ship them with the keyhole not inserted so that everyone could snap it in the needed orientation at installation but that would make the install more complicated for some.

I plan to try your method. However, if it weren't so expensive, I'd just replace all Kwikset locks as they're sub-contractor grade. If you're lucky, a frequently used one might last 5 years. By contrast, the Schlage locks on my father's house are over 50 years old and still going strong. I highly do NOT recommend Kwikset; over 40 years of constantly replacing them has taught me to buy some other brand if possible..

@Skin Bear I ‘think’ this is a feature, allowing the lock set to work with both right hand and left hand doors, one way right side up and one way upside down. Believe it or not, the tool is free if you call them. I think the reason they did this was to make the same lock set work with doors that open from the left side or the right side. Why not just buy a new knob that isn't upside down, take your faulty knob off, put it back in the box belonging to your new knob, and return it to the store. The stores won't know it's an old knob and it's Kwikset's problem anyway.
@DougForce
@DougForce 3 жыл бұрын
@Natalie Morgan it’s not a faulty lock set - it just depends on the swing of the door and which side the handle is on as to the right side up or upside down orientation of the keyhole. If your door causes the keyhole to be upside down, Kwikset makes the locks adjustable like this so you can install it on any door with the key oriented right side up.
