Yes that’s beautiful. The words namaste and yoga when spoken less ‘sing-song’ imbue more impact when spoken in a more contained way. Love this. I wonder if you could comment as I was listening to Dr Hansaji Yogandra on the Yoga Institute channel and she pronounces namaste differently - not ‘stay’ but ‘stah’ as in ahh. Thank you. I’ve never heard it spoken that way.

“Dr.” Yogendra is saying namaskaar, not namaste. Also Indian languages are phonetic and consistent- so namaste is always pronounced as above “nuh-muh-sthey”. The way Americans pronounce it is simply incorrect and would have a completely different spelling if spelled back into Hindi (Devanagari).

I just said namaste to an Indian Girl who was helping me on the cell phone and she giggled a bit and said thank you sir. She sounded amused and honored. I hope I made her day! She was very sweet. American women do not have feminine voices and they often use profanity. I realized how much I miss conversing with feminine women. Maybe I can find an Indian Wife, they are quite lovely!

नमस्ते . I am a. native Hindi speaker. Many Westerners do not pronounce it the correct way, especially the last syllable. Hopefully this will help: NA: the "a" should be pronounced like the second "e" in "toneless" MAS: idem TE: like in "tic" The second syllable "mas" should be stressed.

What does “more firm” mean?? I know the word “firmer”, but not “more firm”. How can we trust someone’s pronunciation when she can’t speak English?

Honestly, this is not exactly how we pronounced it when i lived in India, but there could be regional accents among Indians I guess.

this is a wrong pronunciation and it just means hello
@ronraji Жыл бұрын
Nope its a Hindu religious greeting. By that logic Salam Aleykum also just means Hello.
@prikkeldraad7112 Жыл бұрын
Ask a Muslim or Christian Indian to respond to you with Namaste. It isn't just "hello" for them. For them it's a Hindu word.
