Something you said really hit me - taking the focus off of the house and putting the focus on the people and the lives lived in it. There is so much focus on style and design in homes and clothes and while I appreciate the art of that, it can overtake the actual life you’re trying to live.
@MsNewgirl2 жыл бұрын
I live simply but am not a minimalist. But one thing I do, that I learned from a mom who was amazing at keeping a clean kitchen in a house of six and no dishwasher. Where she made every meal from scratch. This is the lesson. Pick a side of the sink, as you use a dish for cooking, rinse and put on that side. Before, washing dishes. Make sure they are all in that area, stacked neatly. Then wipe down clear areas. Now, when you tackle the dishes, they are all there, neatly stacked and are less intimidating, when you are done, you turn around and get a boost from seeing all the counters clean. I find it also cuts out extra steps.

At the same time I want to shout from the roof tops how much my life has gotten easier over the period of one weekend of decluttering and a complete binge!!!!

My rule when cooking is clean as you go. When your done with a pot or cooking utensil, rinse it. Always make sure the dishwasher is empty before you start cooking, so you can put the rinsed item right into the machine. Wipe spills as soon as they happened. After you chopped up an item, wipe the cutting board immediately. Have as much cleaned as possible before you sit down to eat.

My biggest problem is my husband. He is NOT a minimalist, he is a hoarder, and I don't know how to get him to realize he is a hoarder, and it's not good. My living room is full of boxes, packages from Amazon that he claims will be needed if/when we move. Hundreds of books and papers and scrap papers and notebooks that he has had for years that he refuses to let go. He wants to save them, so I bought a scanner to have them all as a digital copy, but now he says he wants to look at them all before throwing them away, and now it's just sitting collecting dust. We just recently invested in a really good 3D printer and now I've got dozens of miniatures and parts for the 3D printer everywhere. We also have a very small kitchen but loads of spices, and cooking ingredients and I don't have any counter space. It's annoying

Brilliant. Yet again. I particularly liked your "inventory Rolex"! I love your home and the freedom you obviously have by "no longer feeling the need to update your home" (I'm not there yet but can tell it is coming as I increasingly need a home that "helps me live" as my energy decreases). May I also take the opportunity to thank you for helping it to "click" for me with regard to the dishes. Sometime in December I saw one of your videos where you explained that doing the dishes needed to become a habit - just something you do - no discussion - like cleaning your teeth. There has been a huge increase in my success rate since then and it really helps to be on top on the dishes. Thank you! Have a good 2022, Rachel 🧡🙏🏻

Ugh. "Updating" your things. I have a scarf that I wear every winter. It's a timeless piece. Black and white hounds-tooth. My mom keeps telling me that I need a new scarf because I've had that one for too long. Every year she chides me about the scarf. Every year, I explain that just because something is old doesn't mean it needs replacing. It still looks great. To be frank, we live in a time period where nothing looks dated. Style is currently a mishmash of all decades past. Pea coats are back. Bell bottoms are back. Those gym shorts from the 80s (you know the ones with the stripe) are back. Everything is in style. As long as you like it and its functional, why update?

OH I feel this. You have to come up with standards, I guess, from your own thinking or someone else's, and fight the feeling that you are not entitled to decide--that's what helps me. I am entitled to get rid of stuff EVEN IF IT WOULD HAVE BEEN USEFUL A DAY LATER. (I only know of a couple of things that I could have used later, anyway.) What do you do in your daily life? What is piled up against a day you will do something with it but you have been reading a book or something, anything, else instead? (My mom and sewing...she just got tired of it; also my sister and the latch hook rug project--when she put it in the donation pile, she said, slightly deflated, "that didn't hurt as much as I thought it did." None of our stuff is all that necessary, just look at the people whose homes were swept away or collapsed last year--they have to start all over. Or lived in those towns that literally burned to the ground. If you had to flee your home for some reason, what would you take? Don't start today. Just sit with it and think about it for a while. You are not your things. Took me a year to say OK I am THROWING THAT OUT even though...even though...whatever reason I had. Sorry, I have gone on a bit here, don't let me get started on "Never Give Away A Gift. Because It Was A Gift."

I had begun the decluttering process 18 months ago and was doing well but then having previously lost my sister and mum, my dad died and I had the whole house to clear. It was lockdown so no charity goodwill shops were taking anything, I couldn't sell anything due to covid rules about households mixing so I have a whole household of stuff with boxes and boxes that are very emotional to deal with. I have sorted quite a bit but have found it so emotional. Any tips as I am constantly in a muddle and it is stressing me a bit.

Actually the rules should be while you're cooking the meal People should be setting the table and then you can also sit down to eat as soon as dinner is over everybody takes off their plate and utensils and one dish and they should learn how to soak the dishes in the sink while you put things away when you're done putting things away then you can tackle those dishes and someone should stay and help you can do it on a rotating basis. Also first thing in the morning I soak the dishes that accumulated over the night cuz you know we all need love those midnight snacks while I am sweeping the floor. If the floor needs to be mapped you can actually map it while you're doing the few dishes overnight. That makes everything more efficient and you start by soaking your dishes. Even if they're fresh from cooking or the dinner table they always need to be soaked somewhat

Also, I prefer old and slightly mismatched stuff! Feels more like a home and less like a hotel…
@joeseatat2 жыл бұрын
I like that you kept some misspoken words. It's relatable! You feel like a real person! For me, the "dieting" of decluttering led me to the pursuit of the lifestyle of minimalism. Decluttering helped me to realize that I don't need or even want all this stuff, which has helped to prevent a lot of frivolous purchasing. I'm also helping my mom to declutter, and I think her mind is also changing about what she actually uses and what she actually needs. She's valuing being able to access and use her things over having a great number of things.
@smack60302 жыл бұрын
Easiest thing you can do for dishes is NEVER let them go into the sink unless they cannot be put in the dishwasher. You can teach yourself and family to just put dishes directly into the dishwasher. Unless you have a plate or two that needs scraping (into the trash) you should never put them in the sink first. Also, if you keep doing your bowls and pots washed as you finish them by the time you are done with dinner you may have one or two pans that remain to be cleaned. Easy peasy.

I have daily tasks, then weekly tasks, then one task a day that is done monthly. I’m off on Sunday except for food and dishes. I grab a few papers in the pile now and either put them where they go or throw them into recycling. I do a drawer or a cupboard every week and empty and wipe down so then you have to go through stuff. Houses that look like magazines aren’t for me as I find them impersonal. Cleaning makes you feel better about your home and it stays clean. I have a storage area in the basement for those kitchen items I use occasionally. So one week Wednesday is the daily plus the weekly then let’s say cleaning out the inside of the car monthly. One week on Wednesday it’s a the light fixtures, etc. This way the tasks you rarely do become done and hey Friday is catch-up day for those missed tasks and if I really can’t I’ll get it done on Sunday or next week I’ll have two tasks or I wait till next month. Summer I work more outside and go camping but still do stuff throughout the week like daily laundry and kitchen tasks and I wipe down the bathroom and make beds. Yes pretty much all early before work. I finish up after work. Keep your counters clutter free in kitchen and bathroom ( I had a hard time with that one.

Ive seen minimalist people doing room or house tours, even the extreme ones, and ive always thought how easy it would be to do a thorough cleaning on their house. Not a minimalist myself but I like the idea of being one more than those room makeover vids on making houses look more aesthetic without considering the practicality aspect. To be honest, my house isnt that big and its not that cramped. By design, there are lots of ventilation and light source here and there. But the amount of furnitures around me, just imagining i have to dust them every once in a while is driving me crazy. Hence, I've made it my mission someday to have a house that provides enough for me :D Besides i was never a shopaholic to begin with.

Overwhelm, the trouble word; overwhelmed, overwhelming, over-the-top-everything 🤯 That is one of the first experiences of motherhood probably; so much to do and hardly any motivation or strength to get it done. It's very disorienting. For a while, you can manage improvising each day as you go along. But suddenly, one day you get up and nothing seems to work anymore. You're constantly seeing stuff, picking it up, putting it where it should be but you're never done. You feel as if every day is a swamp, a tiresome, joyless swamp. It's hell. My children are 13 and 16 and I am a little back on track now. Keep going, keep the faith. You'll get there and one day, it will be bliss again. Thank you for sharing 💕

I like your approach to minimalism. My kitchen is decluttered, the living room half done, then the bath and bedroom. With back issues, I can only do a little each day, but I'm on it. Nevertheless every year usually between Christmas and new year I usually make a closet purge. I donate what I don't wear for more than 6 months and throw away old/damaged clothes and shoes. Also I like polishing my formal shoes, because I wear suit and tie for work and I have good quality leather shoes that I bought 5 years ago. Eventually my wife does the same and see the benefits of doing so.

I just watched your one touch rule explanation on the countertops video. That was so good, I heard it before but you explained it so it makes it worth doing. I think you explain how to do it all better than anyone else, and I watch them all, looking for someone to put into words what that journey is like, you did it!!

I love this explanation of minimalism 💖 and it perfectly fits what I've suddenly just clicked with in my life this year!! I took a holiday for the first time in years and when I got home my whole internal response to my very cluttered and previously overwhelming home was shifted. This shift was only a couple of degrees, but even one degree off takes traction the longer it is left like that! And there is a snowball effect. Now I am letting go of things little by little. Today I released over a dozen items from one cupboard in my kitchen and was able to move a heap of things to more functional places that both looked and felt better for me. A baby doesn't learn to run in a day. One little accomplishment at a time and then they will snowball!

I wash all my cooking utensils whilst waiting for the food to cook and put all the other used stuff away immediately. The only thing left after diner are the plates, forks, knives and pans.

I sincerely appreciate you sharing your insights. However, I had to dislike because The Grinch is a detestable story, all in all, and that image was upsetting.

Not sure if this is you before or after your video which I just watched on intermittent fasting( which I loved by the way, I’m an intermittent faster myself) but I just want to say you look younger with your hair at this length.
