RK3 Designs is a learning studio focused on teaching how to create beautiful epoxy finishes using Stone Coat Countertop Epoxy. These tutorials include epoxy countertops for kitchens, bathrooms, and much more. This channel provides tutorials for DIYers, contractors, designers, or artists.
Rhonda Dracoulis Founder and Primary Instructor
RK3 Designs started as a way for Rhonda to showcase her creativity but has blossomed into a way to help others find theirs. Her obsession with painting led her to start refinishing furniture and kitchen cabinets. She found customers wanted a nicer option than laminate but more affordable and customizable than natural stone, which lead her to countertop epoxy! Since then, she’s helped thousands of students, from across the country (and even Canada eh?).

From what I have learned from foam working, using acetone and a thin paintbrush will dissolve the foam with less mess and spritzing it with water and taking a heat gun to it gives it some of the best texture still with little to no mess. Hope this helps some people.

50 years ago we used to make all our set designs with sheet foam. In those days we just used petrol to create the weathered natural look. Then we'd paint it up to look like stone arches or log cabins. Foam is such a versatile material. You're only limited by your imagination.

Could you use foam in a bathroom?
@daveyinparis1

@@TikiTiffany Yes, as long as you seal it well. I've had a foam sculpture outside for a few years and because it's been sealed with a few coats of all weather sealer on top of the artwork, it has not deteriorated at all.

40 years ago, I used to do sets and we used acetone to weather the foam for stone walls. I would take a brush and fling it at the styrofoam to eat out spots. Then we used at least 3 shades of gray.

I would like to do this on my basement walls. Our basement is a finished 2 bedroom apartment. The only problem is it has block walls on the exterior and my husband and I disagree about insulating them because likes the painted blocks and the painting technique that was done on them. The outside of the house is real slate rock so I think, especially in the living room it would give me the insulation I want and him the look he wants. It's a win win for us! Thank you so much for this idea to end our 6 year disagreement. ❤️

Hi Ronda! Tx for this unlock! ;P These kind of panels would have a very functional purpose built even from thicker foam and glued to external walls of the house or garage, offering a better insulation by increasing the R value of that wall, also you don't need to worry about re painting or changing a wallpaper. Also in shower panels or wrapping up a kitchen island is great idea, and why not, maybe even head boards for beds or big dresser doors. The small backsplash could also be carved and glued to door architrave/jamb casing/decorative trim around the door! I would not place them close to an intense source of heat though as the foam might melt if it got hot.

This is old school stuff. In fact, of bet my legs that half the buildings in your city are built out of metal studs covered in Styrofoam and rock texture paint. While the interiors are foam carved with cylinder block, wood, Stone patterns then painted. Fast growing cities have been doing this for at least two decades. Also using slick finished concrete with stains to emulate marble then epoxied over. Old old old stuff. It's cheap, fast and often stands up to tornadoes. Almost every modern (built in the last two to three decades) hospital, doctors office, federal building is built out of this decorated foam. It's also good against hurricanes. As long as the plates are attached to the studs etc.

Stunning! I would like suggestions on mounting and on how to interlock panels (that would be a great video!). We’re going to attempt this for our bedroom wall. Since I’m currently not sure how to do an interlocking panel, we are planning on doing a wood ‘grid’ and placing each panel inside the ‘block’. As for that turquoise…. I have a birth ‘defect’ that gives me an extra cone in both eyes, so I see color a bit different and pick up more colors on the spectrum than ‘normal’ people do. If you could see what see, you would be even more impressed with the turquoise as I pick up a tinted green and blue. It’s gorgeous!

So glad I found this channel. I've been planning this project for about a year now and just came across this video. I have learned you can also use a hair dryer or heat gun to "roughen up" the foam board. Then, if you very lightly spray it with water prior to the hair dryer or heat gun, it makes it look even better. Fantastic rock wall !!!!!

Lot of great effort and materials used! I cant say its a uplifting and pleasing look, as it looks like a dungeon look, but for such a look it is good work. I think as mentioned in the start, a lighter, gray mortar look would be much better than black. And yes, the turquoise helped, but very muddy dark dungeon look.

Beautiful work. I liked both sides and glad you added turquoise because it is a reminder that rocks do often have far more color than we realize. As I’m considering something of this kind for a shower wall, I’m wondering how it can be applied to a wall in a way that won’t damage the foam or wind up pulling away from the wall later?

I happened upon this technique about 25 years ago while making Halloween decorations. I wanted to make "headstones" out of 2" Styrofoam. I cut the basic shape and started to carve out the "names/dates" . It was horrible and so time consuming! So, I decided to spray paint over it to hide how bad it was. VOILA! I saw it eating up the Styrofoam and it left a beautiful, old, weathered texture. Bright idea...just paint the names/dates and let the paint melt the styro. Looked carved. Knocked out 5 more in less time than the first hand carved. I had the best ever decor that year. I've been pricing faux stone for my living room and can't get below 4000 bucks. I think I've just fixed the problem. THANK YOU ALL for this great idea.
