Very interesting, thanks for this tutorial! I've recently fallen in love with the artistic lens blur of the Mandalorian TV Show and wanted to recreate something similar. This guided me in the right direction!

Oh, wish I knew this years ago. :D What I did was way more difficult, was making the lens myself. I destroyed an old toy binoculars, fixed the two main lenses in a cardboard toilet paper cilinder. Used iron wire to shuffle the front lens for focus. Drilled a hole in the body-cap for my camera (fixed aperture) and mounted the lens with tape to the cap. Tadaa! Very clumsy, but it worked. XD

Nice! This reminds me of a technique I tried in premiere. I tried to replicate the look of an anamorphic lens. By utilizing lens distortion, vignetting, directional blur and of course cine bars. It’s not perfect but it is fun, especially if you don’t have anamorphic lenses

At Eternity's Gate used a similar effect in some frames throughout the movie. My interpretation was that the blur was to help communicate Vincent Van Gogh's mental illness. It was much more refined than this and took up about half the frame, but nevertheless had a very interesting effect on the scenes.

This was great man! I did this just by masking and using the sharpen/blur with mixed results. Can’t wait to mess around with this method.
