those are cool most of the time but I see them more as moral support, the channel could be more helpful to newer designers with step by step technical videos similar to this.

Nice tutorial, guys! Maybe look into incorporating displacement maps for such a mockup... They really help you take advantage of the original object's colors and textures very efficiently as you layer in your logo. Nice work, regardless, though!

Nice tutorial! I would totally love to see more of those, especially on typography. However, It just might be me, but in the mockup, I think that for the amount of highlight hitting the wax seal there is very little shadow underneath it ..like (south-east) if you know what I mean. Still it just might be my screen eh. :)

Is this the first time such a video is posted on this channel? Because I am surprised! (positively surprised). Here are suggestions for the futur videos: - How are huge sized bill-boards designed? What software to use: Photoshop or Illustrator? What should be the DPI setting? What if the computer cannot handle such a big file and crashes? - How many types of book binding techniques are there? What's the look and feel of each type of binding? How much gutter is needed for specific type of binding technique? - How much less does it cost to print an artwork in 2 color Vs. in 4 color? These may be minor topics, but many self taught designers like me may be ignorant about these technicalities.
@Sesaphim
@Sesaphim 6 жыл бұрын
Contrary to general beliefs billboards are not huge files the dpi is smaller than a standard 8 by 10 print. Checkout fstoppers channel for a breakdown on billboards
@IgoSize
@IgoSize 6 жыл бұрын
I don't know much about 2nd and 3rd questions, but I can give a few tips on the first one since I do work a lot with billboards, print designs, and prepress. 1. DPI - A safe guideline I found is to pick such a DPI that the size of an empty file is around 350-400MB. 2. Software really depends on the project. Illustrator is easier on the system and has less-heavy files (can be a solution for your computer crashing problems). Photoshop is basically a must if you have images and need to do prepress. I usually create and lay out everything in Illustrator, and prepress images in Photoshop. I just find it easier to work in Illustrator. Illustrator is also great if you need to add a bunch of logos to the banner/billboard and don't want to compromise their quality by inserting them as pictures. Hope that helps!

There was too much saturation or chroma around the letters and the letters projected in relief too high off the base. If you had an actual wax seal it would be difficult to have letters that look that deep and still maintain the integrity of a small letter (in height and stroke weight). I letter for a living. We manufacture signs and cut out individual letters. We use a similar technique to give our work a 3D look to show clients what their sign is going to look like before they buy it.
@TRAdamTM
@TRAdamTM 6 жыл бұрын
Wait, hold on, so in effect you show your clients a mockup that isn't representative of the effect that they will get? I understand the previous comments that it "helps legibility", but thats the point I'm trying to make: If I need to fake it and make it more legible because in real life the wax seal will look not be legible, then why am I mocking it up in the first place? Am I not showing a false impression of the product? There is one thing in a mockup being "rough" or a "sketch" to show the client an application, but don't show him something thats not feasible, no?

I make it a deliberate habit to be intentional in choosing the words and tone in which I speak. I'm not perfect, so I keep practicing, studying others and doing my best to improve. since most of the designers we work with don't aspire to be on camera, it's understandable that this isn't their focus. I don't feel that I'm an expert yet, so maybe we can have an acting or speech coach to come in?
