How to Create Beautiful Neutrals

Hi everyone. Do you enjoy playing with your colors? As an artist, I bet you do. Play can be an important part of painting but it's one that we sometimes forget about. For this week's video I decided to play and create some neutral colors.
Neutral colors are great because they tie your painting together and make everything more cohesive. So follow along with me, pick a few of your favorite colors (remember, black and white are free) and lets play.

I agree that these are glorious neutrals. You're using oil paints, correct? Does this mixing of a few colors and black and white work as well with acrylics?

This is valuable information and I want to follow your combinations closely. It would be helpful to have a clear layout of your palette arrangement.The palette is facing you and therefore appears sideways on the screen. Frequently your paint combinations were visual "mix this with this" which adds to my confusion. Referring to each color by name would be helpful both on the palette as well as each color that is being added. I'm a beginner and greatly admire your talent and knowledge. I don't mean to be obtuse but need some clarity. Thanks for sharing!

I love mixing colors! When I began learning it was strange because may colors do not mix well. The colors you use are beautiful! My favorite mix for purples and those greys is Matisse Deep Ocean Blue and Q Magenta or Cobalt teal and D. O. Blue. Learning neutrals is as important (in my opinion) as learning to draw. Gwen, love this. I've learned a lot from it! One question I have is does it work with acrylics?? I was told many years ago that you can't mix your own colours with acrylics, the way you can with oils, because acrylics get muddier and muddier the more colours you mix together. In fact, that person said that this is why you have to buy the colours you want in acrylic. But I like the unified feeling you got by limiting your palette and using the same 4 colours to create your new colours.

Joan.....Acrylics or oil it doesn't matter.....mix away and get the beautiful colors you want as you don't have to buy them. The one thing to remember is mixing transparent colors always makes a transparent color but when you add an opaque color this is when it can start to get muddy. Of course, adding opaques can also give you a gorgeous color but go slow on the amount you added to the mixture.

This is gorgeous, Gwen. My concern would be if I need a lot of one of those neutrals, I would not know how to repeat it because there are so many steps involved. Any advice on that? New sub from Spain🤗

Welcome to the channel.....love having you. As to creating more neutrals....it is simple.....you are using three colors...black and white are free. You can't go wrong with whatever color you come up with because of your limited palette. Keep working on this and you will get the feel.

Hi Gwen! It is so fun just watching you. I’m trying to figure how I can create a large palette like yours. More trial and error. My question is wondering if I can do the same thing with acrylics and is quinacridone transparent with acrylics also???

Lisa....my palette is 1/4 inch glass with old yard sticks stuck around it to keep the paint in. You can decide the size you need and just have the glass cut. Yes, this would work with acrylics and Yes....quinacridone means transparent in all mediums.

I do not worry about getting EXACT colors when remixing. Just getting it CLOSE is actually better, in my opinion. It gives much more excitement and interest to your painting. As you paint, you will see its easy to get close, when as Gwen said, there are only certain colors on the pallet. You can do it! If I can...anyone can! 😁🎨🖌

The red squeegee can be purchased at the Cold Wax Academy site.....it is the smallest of the squeegees and I love that size.
