Thank you sooooo so much for going into detail about all of this 🙏🥹 I only came to learn how to make the speech bubble shape itself, but I stuck around for some of the tips at the start and I'm glad I did. Definitely a valuable video and still relevant today once you're familiar with how the tools work in different versions of the program (and in similar programs I suppose!)

Thanks for the tutorial. I've been lettering my comic in Photoshop for years, but I've used a very different method. It gave me good results, but I think what you're doing here will make for more natural looking word balloons, and I was never able to do the nice curve on the tail. I'm looking forward to experimenting with your technique, although I'll need to good back and reletter my last eight pages so I have a consistent style throughout the comic.

Photoshop CC doesn't seem to have a transform tool. I've used the elipse tool, I've clicked Ctrl+T, I'm holding Ctrl and clicking on the edge of the elipse...Nothing. The worst part is that I actually DID do this successfully previously, a year ago. No idea why it's not working now.

EXCELLENT!! very nice in-depth video tutorial, you got a great voice too., thank you for this, However, it does eems so much work when you consider how many speech bubbles a comic would need, but i guess the more times you do this the quicker it will be. Surely it must be easier to make it into a brush shape of the most commonly used sizing. Also, I was taught that the tail of the bubble only needs to extend halfway in the gap between the bubble and the person and who is speaking, and if possible always have it point at the mouth otherwise like here it seems to be the strand of hair that is doing the talking. Great video again , much thanks.

I just find it easier to draw the balloon by hand, I just put in the text first and draw the balloon around it. Also, have you tried out the wild words font? Its the one thats used for alot of manga scans and I find that it works pretty fine for what I want to do. Plus its free :)

That's another way to do it too. You've got to go with what works best for you ultimately - because there's an infinite number of ways to go about doing this stuff. But, for those who don't know where to begin, this might be a good place to start. I'll have to look up that font you mentioned too! Sounds awesome, especially if it's a free one. -Clayton

Thanks for the video. It's interesting to me that photoshop and the online community don't seem to think anybody puts talk bubbles on anything, yet I see them everywhere. There's actually a talk bubble shape available, but nobody knows how to use them, including the help people. It was actually taken off the standard shapes and now is found under legacy shapes. You have a brute force method for creating something that should be a simple click and resize. Not your fault, just the bizarre fact that people who make comics must not be using photoshop.

"Could not transform the selected pixels because the selected area is empty" is the error message I get I try to follow this tutorial, when trying to select the ellipse. Even after 2 Photoshop classes costing like a thousand dollars, I still have no idea why this happens, and it HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. I basically am afraid to use Photoshop at this point because, like almost always, I get 80 percent done with a project and that same error message happens, and I have to start over because I have no idea what is happening.

This Clayton chappy really is the shiz, he seems to be back to line art now but his last 2 were digitally painted, quite the renaissance man. I don't know how he can come up with such stylish, crazy stuff each time, if you properly assess the sitch here, she's wearing a leather/latex leotard, a canvas jacket with a fur hood and rolled up sleeves, futuristic looking sunglasses, glamrock hairstyle and her gloves and leg straps suggest she's from a post apocalyptic future where a virus or killer robots have wiped out 90% of mankind. Her boyfriend would probably have one shoulder pad larger than the other and a hi-tech headset to communicate with his guerilla commandos.

I'm not to fond of digital art..for some reason I don't think it holds value when talking about comic art..manipulating lines with a tool makes it to simple...manufactured if I may., and to me it feels like I'm looking, or buying that art just because.thats my opinion.
@howtodrawcomicsnet7 жыл бұрын
For sure. You should never buy comic art just because, especially if you don't dig the medium. You've got to find your own value in it - for you, that's the level of authenticity you feel resides within a piece of traditionally made comic art. For others it might be value found within the idea that's being shown, or the story that's being told within the illustration. In the end, it all boils down to the medium and tools used by the artist to realize their vision. -Clayton
