Oh my goodness!!! You helped me so much with how to hold my yarn!!!❤️ All the videos that you see for beginners on crocheting do not show you how to hold your yarn and I found that very difficult, because I had too much tension or I didn't have enough and my crocheting was a mess as you can imagine so thank you from the bottom of my heart this video. My grandmother used to crochet and knit all the time but no one in my family does it so I thought I'd pick it up. unfortunately she passed away so I wanted honored her memory by learning how to crochet and one day knitting. So thank you ❤️

You are welcome! Currently I using knife and pencil grip. I only use a knife grip when working with jumbo or bulky yarn. I think we change methods as we learn.

If you go round little finger by looping it under wedding ring and over middle finger so it leaves first finger and thumb holding your work. The nuns taught me the Patons method and hold hook like a pen. No sore fingers ever. I taught crochet for several years and some videos have bad methods . I cringe how many times people have to readjust the tension fingers. I recommend Patons diagrams and you can't go wrong. The nuns were great and I learnt correct method from the start.

This is exactly how I hold my yarn and crochet hook now. In my opinion the pen grip is the one who gives the best results in most especially while working with fine fibers.

When I started crocheting, about 10 yrs. ago, I was holding the yarn too tight and my hands always hurt. Now, I don’t hold it anywhere as tightly as I used to, but have discovered that different pattern designers will have a different tension, and sometimes changing your needle size doesn’t work because it’s not the length that they’re looking for but the height. A designer also said this to me once. She said that some people are yankers, meaning very tight, some people are riders, meaning in between, or lifters, meaning very loose, and some patterns call for one of each style. I saw your video and am going to try this, this seems like a good way to control my yarn.

Thank you for sharing your experience and I agree 100%. in my expletives, changing the holds have impacted the tension. I discovered as I was learning that using the pencil hold will give my work a cleaner finish, tension wise, this is the hold I’m using now, pencil grip. While working with bulky fibers then I use the knife hold.

Thank you for you video , I have been crocheting for 10 months now and mainly crochet amigurumi items. Love them so much. I use the same hold method as you, however I have am suffering from a callus on my middle finger and have punctured my finger and I keep making it sore. I have tried holding the my work in a different way ,but its not nature to me. What am I doing wrong. Yes help

You are welcome! I changed my hold to pencil ✏️ somehow I love it and it works good for me, the knife hold was triggering carpal tunnel. You can use finger protectors, these are the ones I use from time to time, it works good. amzn.to/3tuqcs8 Happy Crochet!

I didn't see a video of how to hold the yarn correctly, so I learnt to do it the wrong way, just sliding through my fist (which I can use to control my tension). I have tried holding the yarn "properly" but my skin gets really irritated and red from the rubbing as the yarn slides through. I put my hook very close to my first finger (so my hands are very close together) which I can still use to hold my work if I need it, and my speed increases with the small movements. I'm not saying that my method is any better, only that it works for me. Had I not trusted myself I might I might have given up crochet altogether because of skin issues.
